Nebraska’s quarterback picture is unsettled entering the opener, but Colandrea, a senior, is the most experienced name in the room and the leading candidate to open the season under center. Coach Matt Rhule has won at least seven games in each of his two seasons in Lincoln but still has not beaten a ranked opponent, extending a streak that has reached 29 straight losses to AP top 25 teams. Whoever starts at quarterback will face an Ohio defense that already produced four interceptions and 5.5 tackles for loss from Eli Thompson alone last season. A clean, mistake-free outing at quarterback keeps Rhule’s program on track heading into a schedule that only gets tougher from here.

Smith is the best player in college football, and it is not particularly close. He nearly won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver last season, and Ohio State is banking on him to make replacing 11 NFL draft picks, including three first-round selections, look easier than it should be. Ball State’s defense has not faced a receiver with Smith’s combination of size and separation, and there is no reason to expect Ohio State’s staff to manage his workload in a game this lopsided on paper. If Smith opens the season the way he played most of last year, this will be over by the second quarter.

Interim coach Rob Harley built his reputation as a defensive coordinator, and pairing him with a cornerback who produces at that rate gives Northern Illinois a real building block on defense as the program moves to the Mountain West. Iowa is not going to be an easy measuring stick, but Falke forcing even one contested throw would be a meaningful data point for a Huskies defense trying to prove last season’s offensive collapse was the exception.

Iowa’s offense will go only as far as Kirk Ferentz’s commitment to the run allows, and Moulton is the engine behind that approach. He has averaged 5.3 yards per carry over the past two seasons, production that has held steady regardless of who is playing quarterback in Iowa City. Northern Illinois gave up 285 yards a game on average last season while scoring just 17 points a night, numbers that suggest this Huskies defense is not built to slow down a downhill runner like Moulton. If Ferentz leans on him early, Iowa could control this game before halftime even without much production from the passing game.

The No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders will host the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Saturday in a Week 1 college football matchup on FS1.

What an eventful offseason it has been for Texas Tech.

After a historic 2025 season in which the Red Raiders went 12-2, won the Big 12 and reached the CFP for the first time in school history before falling to Oregon in the Orange Bowl, Texas Tech brought in top transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby.

However, after the NCAA ruled Sorsby ineligible due to extensive violations of its sports wagering policies, the former Cincinnati quarterback eventually stepped away from the program.

Now, Will Hammond will take the reins. In 2025, Hammond appeared in nine games (two starts), completing 63.3% of his passes for 680 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He also added 299 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Texas Tech also returns what could be the best running back duo in the Big 12 in Cameron Dickey and J’Koby Williams. However, the Red Raiders lost defensive captain Jacob Rodriguez, their top two pass rushers — including No. 3 overall pick David Bailey — and their top two cornerbacks from last season.

Meanwhile, Abilene Christian is coming off a 9-5 season at the FCS level in 2025. The Wildcats opened their 2026 campaign last week with a 21-14 loss to Lamar.

In Weeks 1 and 2 last season, Texas Tech blew out two inferior opponents as heavy favorites, beating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 67-7 and Kent State 64-14. The Red Raiders’ offense averaged 42.5 points per game during the regular season, ranking third in the FBS and first in the Big 12. Texas Tech also brought in veteran quarterback Tommy Castellanos just last week, which could help the Over in two ways. Hammond should be extra motivated to play well and solidify his starting job, while Castellanos, who should be available, will have an opportunity to make an impression in his debut against an FCS opponent. Even if Texas Tech builds a big lead, there’s reason to believe it won’t take its foot off the gas. Last season’s early blowouts showed that, and the Red Raiders have enough offensive firepower to potentially hit this total themselves. And if they don’t, Abilene Christian could help. Texas Tech lost significant production from last year’s defense, and while the Red Raiders reloaded on that side of the ball, it could be difficult to immediately replicate last season’s level of success. LSU handed Lane Kiffin a full rebuild this offseason, and Leavitt was the centerpiece of it. He arrived from Arizona State as the No. 1-ranked quarterback in the transfer portal, then watched his 2025 season end early with an ankle injury before he ever got to Baton Rouge. Now he steps into Tiger Stadium under the lights, behind an offensive line anchored by five-star tackle Jordan Seaton, against a Clemson defense replacing its own share of experience. A clean, confident debut would go a long way toward proving Kiffin’s roster overhaul can compete immediately in the SEC.

Clemson turns the page on the Cade Klubnik era in about the toughest spot imaginable: a true road opener at Tiger Stadium. Vizzina spent three seasons waiting behind Klubnik and has exactly one career start to his name, a 317-yard, three-touchdown outing against SMU last season that at least answered some early questions. He’s a bigger, more traditional pocket passer than his predecessor, which changes how Dabo Swinney’s offense will attack LSU’s front. How Vizzina handles the noise and disguised looks of a hostile SEC environment will say a lot about Clemson’s ceiling in 2026.

No tight end in the country produced more touchdowns than Green a year ago, and PFF has rewarded him with a No. 1 ranking at the position entering 2026. The Zachary, Louisiana native caught 33 passes for 433 yards and seven scores as a sophomore, already the program record for touchdown receptions by a tight end, and he’s a matchup problem at 6-foot-7 with legitimate track speed down the seam. Clemson’s front seven is still finding its identity after offseason turnover, and if Green wins early against linebackers in coverage, LSU has an easy answer for a new starting quarterback to lean on.

Clemson needs a security blanket for a first-time starter walking into a hostile SEC building, and that’s the job Moore has already shown he can do. He led the Tigers in receiving a season ago with 837 yards, the clearest proof that Clemson’s passing game doesn’t start and end with names like Bryant Wesco. With Wesco working back from a back injury that cost him half of last season, Moore’s role as Vizzina’s most trusted target only grows, and LSU’s secondary will have to account for him on early downs just to slow this offense down.
