Iowa vs. Northern Illinois Prediction, Odds, Pick For College Football

The No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes will host the Northern Illinois Huskies on Saturday in a Week 1 college football matchup on Big Ten Network.

Kirk Ferentz enters his 28th season as Iowa’s head coach looking to add to his 209 career wins, the most by a head coach in Big Ten history. The No. 22 Hawkeyes will open their season at home against a Northern Illinois team beginning its first year in the Mountain West Conference.

Ferentz has yet to name a starting quarterback, with Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski still competing for the job. Both quarterbacks are expected to play in the season opener, giving Ferentz and the Hawkeyes an opportunity to evaluate the two options in game action.

Northern Illinois, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back after a 3-9 season in 2025. The Huskies enter their first year in the Mountain West with interim head coach Rob Harley leading a significantly revamped roster. With no returning starters on defense and only four on offense, Harley will bring an inexperienced group into Kinnick Stadium for the season opener.

Let’s take a look at the odds for Iowa vs. NIU at DraftKings Sportsbook as of Sept. 5.

Iowa Hawkeyes Northern Illinois Huskies NIU @ No. 22 Iowa Prediction, Pick

From FOX Sports Research:

Iowa has built a reputation for boring, low-scoring, physical football, and with two new quarterbacks in the mix, don’t expect that to change in Week 1. Ferentz likely won’t put too much on their plate and will instead lean heavily on the running game. Leading rusher Kamari Moulton returns after rushing for 878 yards last season, and the Hawkeyes added L.J. Phillips Jr. through the transfer portal. Phillips rushed for 1,921 yards and 19 touchdowns at South Dakota last season. Pair him with Moulton and Iowa’s offensive line, and the Hawkeyes should have a strong ground game. That’s not a great matchup for Northern Illinois. The Huskies allowed 183.3 rushing yards per game last season, the fourth-most in the MAC. Even with uncertainty at quarterback, Iowa shouldn’t have much trouble moving the ball on the ground and finding the end zone. Expect the Hawkeyes to control this game from start to finish. Take Iowa to cover the spread in this Week 1 matchup.

Iowa Hawkeyes Northern Illinois Huskies The Pick: Iowa -31.5

How to Watch North Texas vs

The North Texas Mean Green visit the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. ET from Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, IN.

Indiana opens its national-title defense at home Saturday against North Texas, and the No. 6 Hoosiers bring the nation’s most productive offense with them. Indiana led all of Division I with 87 total touchdowns in 2025, while North Texas ranked third nationally with 75. Indiana is a 40.5-point favorite at DraftKings, with the total set at 56.5.

Below, we’ll give you all the details you need to know about how to watch this game.

Players to Watch

North Texas Mean Green

North Texas enters Week 1 replacing almost its entire 2025 team, since former coach Eric Morris and much of the roster left for Oklahoma State’s staff overhaul. New coach Neal Brown is rebuilding around transfers, and Ezeani is the most proven piece up front. He racked up 11 tackles for loss, five sacks and two forced fumbles a season ago at UTEP, and North Texas needs that kind of disruption against Indiana’s retooled offense. Brown went 37-35 at West Virginia but won big at Troy, and his defense only works if players like Ezeani hold up in bigger games than the ones he played on lesser rosters. Against a team breaking in a new starting quarterback, his pass rush could decide how much rhythm Indiana’s offense finds early.

Indiana Hoosiers

Hoover arrives from TCU as the third different starting quarterback in three years for the defending national champions, and the numbers travel with him. He has thrown for 9,629 yards over 35 career games, the most of any returning passer in the country. Indiana lost significant pieces from last year’s 16-0 team, but coach Curt Cignetti has not lost a game yet with a quarterback he trusts running the offense. North Texas is breaking in a new coaching staff of its own, and Hoover gets a chance to open his Indiana career the way he left TCU, distributing the ball to a receiver room that already includes Charlie Becker and Nick Marsh. A clean opener keeps Indiana’s title defense on schedule.

How to Watch Ohio vs

The Ohio Bobcats visit the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. ET from Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, NE.

Nebraska and Ohio both open their 2026 seasons at 0-0 on Saturday in Lincoln. Nebraska held the passing edge between the two teams in 2025 (224.6 yards per game to Ohio’s 184.2), while Ohio had the rushing advantage (227.4 to 145.9). Nebraska is a 24-point favorite at DraftKings, with the total set at 46.5.

Below, we’ll give you all the details you need to know about how to watch this game.

  • When: Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 12:00 a.m. ET
  • Where: Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, NE
  • TV: FS1
  • Stream: Watch 3 days free on FOX One

Players to Watch

Ohio Bobcats

Thompson joins Ohio as one of coach John Hauser’s most productive imports, and the numbers back that up. He posted 47 total tackles, including 5.5 for loss, picked off four passes and added a sack last season at Holy Cross. Ohio won 40 games over the previous four years under Hauser’s predecessor, and Hauser inherits both that standard and Thompson’s ballhawking presence in the secondary to help defend it. Nebraska brings in a senior transfer quarterback who is still unproven in Lincoln, and a secondary that already produced four interceptions a year ago gives Ohio a real chance to make that debut uncomfortable.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

Nebraska’s quarterback picture is unsettled entering the opener, but Colandrea, a senior, is the most experienced name in the room and the leading candidate to open the season under center. Coach Matt Rhule has won at least seven games in each of his two seasons in Lincoln but still has not beaten a ranked opponent, extending a streak that has reached 29 straight losses to AP top 25 teams. Whoever starts at quarterback will face an Ohio defense that already produced four interceptions and 5.5 tackles for loss from Eli Thompson alone last season. A clean, mistake-free outing at quarterback keeps Rhule’s program on track heading into a schedule that only gets tougher from here.

How to Watch Ball State vs

The Ball State Cardinals visit the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 12:30 p.m. ET from Ohio Stadium, Columbus, OH.

Ohio State opens as the preseason No. 1 team at home against Ball State on Saturday, with quarterback Julian Sayin coming off a 2025 season of 3,610 passing yards and 32 touchdowns. Ohio State posted the highest completion rate in the country last year at 76.7%, while Ball State finished with the fewest total yards in Division I at 2,551. Ohio State is a 50.5-point favorite at DraftKings, with the total set at 56.5.

Below, we’ll give you all the details you need to know about how to watch this game.

  • When: Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 12:30 p.m. ET
  • Where: Ohio Stadium, Columbus, OH
  • TV: BTN
  • Stream: Watch 3 days free on FOX One

Players to Watch

Ball State Cardinals

Ball State is still climbing out of the MAC’s lower tier in coach Mike Uremovich’s second year, and Mizzell gives the offense real juice at quarterback. He threw for 2,889 yards and 26 touchdowns a season ago at Division II Concord, with five games of 300 passing yards or more, the kind of volume production that earned him a shot at the FBS level. Ohio State’s defense is replacing key pieces after last year’s championship run, but this is still a massive step up in competition for Mizzell in his first game above Division II. How he handles that jump will say plenty about whether his production translates.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Smith is the best player in college football, and it is not particularly close. He nearly won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver last season, and Ohio State is banking on him to make replacing 11 NFL draft picks, including three first-round selections, look easier than it should be. Ball State’s defense has not faced a receiver with Smith’s combination of size and separation, and there is no reason to expect Ohio State’s staff to manage his workload in a game this lopsided on paper. If Smith opens the season the way he played most of last year, this will be over by the second quarter.

How to Watch Northern Illinois vs

The Northern Illinois Huskies visit the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 4:15 p.m. ET from Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, IA.

Iowa opens the season ranked No. 22 at home against Northern Illinois. The Huskies enter at 0-0 with Brady Davidson at quarterback, while Iowa has not yet named a starter. DraftKings has Iowa as a 31.5-point favorite, up from an opening line of 30.5, with the total at 44.5, down from an opening 45.5.

Below, we’ll give you all the details you need to know about how to watch this game.

  • When: Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 4:15 p.m. ET
  • Where: Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, IA
  • TV: BTN
  • Stream: Watch 3 days free on FOX One

Players to Watch

Northern Illinois Huskies

Falke’s path to a Power Four opponent runs through NAIA, not a bigger conference, and that makes his production last year even more of an outlier. He broke up nine passes and intercepted five more at Marian in Indiana, numbers that would stand out at any level of college football. Interim coach Rob Harley built his reputation as a defensive coordinator, and pairing him with a cornerback who produces at that rate gives Northern Illinois a real building block on defense as the program moves to the Mountain West. Iowa is not going to be an easy measuring stick, but Falke forcing even one contested throw would be a meaningful data point for a Huskies defense trying to prove last season’s offensive collapse was the exception.

Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa’s offense will go only as far as Kirk Ferentz’s commitment to the run allows, and Moulton is the engine behind that approach. He has averaged 5.3 yards per carry over the past two seasons, production that has held steady regardless of who is playing quarterback in Iowa City. Northern Illinois gave up 285 yards a game on average last season while scoring just 17 points a night, numbers that suggest this Huskies defense is not built to slow down a downhill runner like Moulton. If Ferentz leans on him early, Iowa could control this game before halftime even without much production from the passing game.

How to Watch Abilene Christian vs

The Abilene Christian Wildcats visit the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. ET from Galaxy Stadium, Lubbock, TX.

Texas Tech led the nation with 28 forced fumbles last season, while Abilene Christian’s 11 fumbles recovered at home ranked second nationally. Texas Tech is a 42.5-point favorite at DraftKings, with the total set at 59.5.

Below, we’ll give you all the details you need to know about how to watch this game.

  • When: Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. ET
  • Where: Galaxy Stadium, Lubbock, TX
  • TV: FS1
  • Stream: Watch 3 days free on FOX One

Players to Watch

Stone Earle

Abilene Christian nearly pulled off a stunner in Lubbock two years ago, erasing an 18-point deficit before Texas Tech escaped in overtime, 52-51. Earle, who threw for 3,285 yards and 22 touchdowns last season, gives the Wildcats a proven arm capable of testing a Red Raiders defense that forced the most fumbles in the country a year ago. Abilene Christian is already 0-1 after a season-opening loss to Lamar, and Texas Tech opens at No. 12 as a 42.5-point favorite in front of a sellout crowd celebrating last year’s Big 12 title.

Tommy Castellanos

Texas Tech’s quarterback picture carries some flexibility entering the opener, with transfer Castellanos in the mix behind starter Will Hammond and even mentioned as a possible receiver. That depth matters against an Abilene Christian team that nearly won in Lubbock two years ago. The Red Raiders enter at No. 12 and heavily favored, but a defense that led the nation in forced fumbles last season will be tested early if Texas Tech’s offense takes time to find its rhythm.

How to Watch Marshall vs

The Marshall Thundering Herd visit the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. ET from West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, University Park, PA.

Penn State opens Matt Campbell’s tenure at home against Marshall at Beaver Stadium. Penn State led the country with 8 sacks in the red zone last season, while Marshall forced 10 fumbles in the second half, the second-most in the nation. Penn State is a 24.5-point favorite, with the total set at 52.5.

Below, we’ll give you all the details you need to know about how to watch this game.

How to Watch Marshall vs. Penn State

  • When: Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. ET
  • Where: West Shore Home Field at Beaver Stadium, University Park, PA
  • TV: FS1
  • Stream: Watch 3 days free on FOX One

Players to Watch

Carlos Del Rio-Wilson

Del Rio-Wilson walks into Beaver Stadium’s Stripe Out as the most experienced quarterback on the field for Matt Campbell’s Penn State debut. He threw for 2,043 yards and 17 touchdowns last season, numbers that will be tested against a Penn State defense that led the country in sacks and pressures out of the red zone a year ago. Penn State is favored by 24.5 points, so Del Rio-Wilson’s ability to protect the ball early could decide how much noise the sellout crowd gets to make.

Zay Robinson

Robinson is back after recovering from an injury of his own, and his availability matters for Matt Campbell’s Beaver Stadium debut given how much weight falls on the receiving corps in front of a sold-out Stripe Out crowd. Getting a full complement of targets back on the field gives Penn State’s still-unnamed starting quarterback one less variable to manage in his first outing under center. The Nittany Lions are favored by 24.5 points, a number that assumes the passing game holds up its end early against Marshall.

The Boston College Eagles visit the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday, September 5, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. ET from Nippert Stadium, Cincinnati, OH.

Boston College’s offense produced 17 passing plays of 20-plus yards in the fourth quarter last season, the second-most in the country, while Cincinnati’s defense had the fewest interceptions and passes defended in the FBS. Cincinnati is a 7.5-point favorite at DraftKings, with the total set at 50.5.

JV Gibson

Cincinnati opens its 2026 season at home against Boston College. Gibson is locked in as a Week 1 starter at wideout for the Bearcats, giving Cincinnati a target to build around in the opener. Cincinnati is favored by 7.5 points, a modest number for a home opener against an ACC opponent.

Zeke Moore

Boston College opens its season on the road at Cincinnati, and the Eagles will lean on Moore at tight end to help settle a young offense in an unfamiliar building. Cincinnati enters off a defense that had the fewest interceptions and passes defended in the country a year ago, a gap that could open room for Boston College’s passing game if Moore and the receiving corps take advantage. How quickly Boston College adjusts on the road will shape the rest of this early-season test.

Texas Tech vs. Abilene Christian Prediction, Odds, Pick For College

The No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders will host the Abilene Christian Wildcats on Saturday in a Week 1 college football matchup on FS1.

What an eventful offseason it has been for Texas Tech.

After a historic 2025 season in which the Red Raiders went 12-2, won the Big 12 and reached the CFP for the first time in school history before falling to Oregon in the Orange Bowl, Texas Tech brought in top transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby.

However, after the NCAA ruled Sorsby ineligible due to extensive violations of its sports wagering policies, the former Cincinnati quarterback eventually stepped away from the program.

Now, Will Hammond will take the reins. In 2025, Hammond appeared in nine games (two starts), completing 63.3% of his passes for 680 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He also added 299 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Texas Tech also returns what could be the best running back duo in the Big 12 in Cameron Dickey and J’Koby Williams. However, the Red Raiders lost defensive captain Jacob Rodriguez, their top two pass rushers — including No. 3 overall pick David Bailey — and their top two cornerbacks from last season.

Meanwhile, Abilene Christian is coming off a 9-5 season at the FCS level in 2025. The Wildcats opened their 2026 campaign last week with a 21-14 loss to Lamar.

Let’s take a look at the odds for Texas Tech vs. Abilene Christian at FanDuel Sportsbook as of Sept. 5.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Abilene Christian Wildcats Abilene Christian @ No. 12 Texas Tech Odds

Spread

    [–>

  • Texas Tech -42.5: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total)
  • Abilene Christian +42.5: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total)

Over/Under

  • Over 58.5: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total)
  • Under 58.5: -110 (bet $10 to win $19.09 total)

Texas Tech Red Raiders Abilene Christian Wildcats Abilene Christian @ No. 12 Texas Tech Prediction, Pick

From FOX Sports Research:

In Weeks 1 and 2 last season, Texas Tech blew out two inferior opponents as heavy favorites, beating Arkansas-Pine Bluff 67-7 and Kent State 64-14. The Red Raiders’ offense averaged 42.5 points per game during the regular season, ranking third in the FBS and first in the Big 12. Texas Tech also brought in veteran quarterback Tommy Castellanos just last week, which could help the Over in two ways. Hammond should be extra motivated to play well and solidify his starting job, while Castellanos, who should be available, will have an opportunity to make an impression in his debut against an FCS opponent. Even if Texas Tech builds a big lead, there’s reason to believe it won’t take its foot off the gas. Last season’s early blowouts showed that, and the Red Raiders have enough offensive firepower to potentially hit this total themselves. And if they don’t, Abilene Christian could help. Texas Tech lost significant production from last year’s defense, and while the Red Raiders reloaded on that side of the ball, it could be difficult to immediately replicate last season’s level of success. Take the Over.

Texas Tech Red Raiders Abilene Christian Wildcats The Pick: Over 58.5
