Lamine Yamal Scores Golazo And Spain’s Unbeaten Streak Continues

–>

Lamine Yamal kept up his run of early goals in the Nations League when he put Spain ahead with a superb sixth-minute goal against Czechia on Saturday.

Spain, winners of this summer’s World Cup, have now gone 41 matches without a loss.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente shook his head in admiration and disbelief as Yamal cut inside down the right and unleashed a powerful curling shot with his left foot into the top left corner.

Goalkeeper Antonín Kinský could not even get near the ball.

This trademark Yamal strike followed the 19-year-old star’s second-minute goals against Croatia in a 4-1 win on Tuesday and away to England in a 3-2 victory on Sept. 26.

The Ballon d’Or contender has also been in outstanding form for defending La Liga champion Barcelona this season.

England Puts 7 Goals Past Croatia As Kane, Saka, Bellingham

Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka scored two each as ruthless England crushed Croatia 7-0 away in the Nations League on Saturday.

Ballon d’Or contender Kane extended his national record to 89 international goals. Left winger Anthony Gordon set up Jude Bellingham and grabbed one for himself. Substitute Morgan Rogers completed the rout in Rijeka.

“It was very impressive, and we created so many chances. In the first 40 minutes we were so fluid right from the start. It just never stopped,” England coach Thomas Tuchel said. “We just kept the pace up and played through the gaps. We were very, very clinical.”

Later in other League A play, World Cup champion Spain hosted Czechia in Oviedo and looked to make it 40 straight games unbeaten. Switzerland faced Slovenia and Scotland went to North Macedonia in League B matches.

England cruises

Kane put England ahead in the eighth minute, controlling a pass from Bellingham with the outside of his right foot and then curling the ball into the top left corner.

Bellingham poked in Gordon’s cross midway through the first half. Gordon stooped to head in Jarell Quansah’s right-wing cross and Saka side-footed in England’s fourth approaching halftime.

After the break, Croatia’s defense was sliced open again on a quick break and Elliot Anderson curled in a cross from the right and Kane slid in at the back post for a poacher’s finish.

“We’re at our best when we’re free, when we’re physically just overpowering,” Kane said. “They couldn’t live with our pace, our movement, our runs.”

More bad defending saw Croatia unable to clear the ball and it ended up at the feet of Kane, who gifted Saka his second in the 68th. Rogers controlled Bellingham’s pass with his heel and slotted in from an angle.

The result eclipsed England’s previous highest score against Croatia, 5-1 in World Cup qualifying in 2009 at Wembley.

Tuchel’s England moved onto six points from three games.

Bad start for Bilić

It was another tough match for Croatia coach Slaven Bilić following Tuesday’s 4-1 loss in Spain. His side has conceded 12 goals in three matches.

Luka Modric started the game in Rijeka but the 41-year-old looked frustrated by his team’s sloppy performance.

What’s Biggest Obstacle In Way Of Dodgers’ 3-Peat? Derek Jeter,

What’s the No. 1 threat standing between the Los Angeles Dodgers and a three-peat?

Ahead of the Dodgers’ Game 1 showdown on Saturday afternoon against the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series, FOX Sports MLB Studio Analyst Derek Jeter explained what the largest obstacle is in the way of the Dodgers becoming the first MLB team to three-peat since the Hall of Famer’s New York Yankees (1998-2000) on Saturday’s “MLB on FOX Pregame” show.

“What makes it challenging is from a fatigue standpoint, not just physically, but also mentally,” Jeter said about the Dodgers trying to win the World Series for a third consecutive year. “Physically, we’ve seen the Dodgers break down a little bit. They’re dealing with a lot of injuries. But, mentally, playing that extra month every season, it takes a toll after some time. You got to stay hungry. You got to guard against being satisfied. This year, the National League is tough.

“Having said that, if there is a team that can do it, it’s this Los Angeles Dodgers team.”

Alex Rodriguez added that if the Dodgers fail to advance past the NLDS, it wouldn’t be because of “talent.” Rather, it would be because of “mental and emotional fatigue.”

The Dodgers finished the regular season 100-62, good for the No. 2 seed in the NL playoffs. Should they defeat the Braves in the best-of-five series, they’d play the winner of the NLDS series between the Milwaukee Brewers, who won an MLB-best 103 games, and San Diego Padres.

Los Angeles boasted one of MLB’s elite offenses this season. In the regular season, the Dodgers were second in MLB in slugging percentage (.424), third in both batting average (.257) and on-base percentage (.338), fourth outright in runs (801), tied for fourth in hits (1,399) and tied for seventh in home runs (204).

Two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani — who hasn’t pitched since July 3 due to various injuries, including knee inflammation — logged 30 home runs, 81 RBIs and a .512 slugging percentage over 135 games; center fielder Andy Pages led the Dodgers with 85 RBIs and six wins above replacement; third baseman Max Muncy hit 29 home runs.

As for their starting rotation, the Dodgers’ starting staff was first in MLB in WHIP (1.08) and opponent batting average (.218), second in ERA (3.43), third in innings pitched (879 ⅔) and fourth in strikeouts (904). Yoshinobu Yamamoto led the way for the Dodgers with another stellar season, recording a 2.53 ERA, an 0.87 WHIP and a 167 ERA+ over 28 starts (185.0 innings pitched). Plus, Los Angeles acquired defending, back-to-back American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers before the MLB trade deadline.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers’ bullpen was first in opponent batting average (.218) and tied for fifth in WHIP (1.23). Granted, it was ninth with a 3.74 ERA, which was eighth among the sport’s 12 playoff teams. Left-hander Tanner Scott converted 25 of 29 save opportunities.

The Dodgers defeated the Yankees in the 2024 World Series in five games and beat the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2025 World Series in seven games.

Should Los Angeles ultimately accomplish the three-peat, it would break a tie with the Boston Red Sox and Athletics for the third-most World Series in MLB history (the Dodgers, Red Sox and Athletics each have nine).

Kamario Taylor Injury: Jeff Lebby Provides Update On Mississippi State’s

–>

Mississippi State standout quarterback Kamario Taylor, arguably the most explosive signal-caller in the country through the first four weeks of the college football season, is “day to day,” according to head coach Jeff Lebby, after leaving the Bulldogs’ 56-23 loss to No. 7 Alabama on Saturday.

Taylor exited the game early in the fourth quarter and appeared to be walking gingerly toward the team’s locker room. He was seen on the sidelines wearing a walking boot.

Taylor injured his right leg during No. 16 Mississippi State’s win over Missouri last week. The dual-threat quarterback played through noticeable discomfort this Saturday, and his performance reflected that.

The sophomore signal-caller finished the day completing just 19 of 34 passes for 258 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He also fumbled on the team’s opening drive of the game.

Taylor entered the game with 185 rushing yards, but finished Saturday’s contest with -26 rushing yards after being sacked five times. He entered the game listed at +500 to take home this year’s Heisman Trophy, but dropped to +3000 on FanDuel Sportsbook following the loss to Alabama.

Mississippi State is on a bye next weekend before hosting No. 11 LSU on Oct. 17.

Kyle Whittingham Searching For Answers: ‘Might Have To Make Some

Kyle Whittingham is unsure of where to go from here.

After Michigan fell 20-14 to Minnesota on Saturday at Huntington Bank Stadium, the team’s second consecutive defeat and first loss to the Golden Gophers since 2014, the Wolverines’ head coach opened up about the challenge of figuring out his team.

“I’ve been in this profession 40-some years,” Whittingham said in his postgame press conference, “and this is the biggest challenge I’ve had. I promise you we’re going to figure it out.”

The crux of Michigan’s issues has been its offense, which produced fewer than 20 points for the fourth time in five games this season. Quarterback Bryce Underwood, the top-ranked recruit in the 2025 class, completed just 10 of his 21 pass attempts for 101 yards on Saturday. He threw interceptions on consecutive possessions in the second half with Michigan holding onto a slim lead.

And after Minnesota took a six-point lead with 13:44 remaining in the game, Michigan had three chances to construct a game-winning drive. Two concluded in a punt, and the final one, a game-ending turnover on downs. The Wolverines didn’t score a single point in the second half.

Through five games, Underwood has completed 59% of his attempts and thrown as many interceptions (five) as touchdowns.

So, where do the Wolverines (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) go from here?

“We might have to make some tough decisions here, we’ll see,” Whittingham said following the game. “Right now, to this point, through this portion of the season, it’s unacceptable. The results are unacceptable right now.”

Whittingham avoided making any big-picture statements about Underwood’s status as the team’s starter, but with a bye week on the horizon, he’ll have two weeks to mull over the direction of Michigan’s offense going forward.

“Everything’s in play,” Whittingham said. “What you don’t want to do is panic. We are 3-2. We have seven games to right the ship as much as we can during this bye week.”

Jeremiah Smith Can’t Stop Making History, This Time With An

–> FOX Sports Research [–>

Ohio State is known as “Wide Receiver U” thanks to players like Chris Olave and Emeka Egbuka. Cris Carter and David Boston before them. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Garrett Wilson and Marvin Harrison Jr. as well.

On Saturday while playing against Iowa, Jeremiah Smith surpassed every single one of them and so many more.

Smith set the record for most touchdown catches and total receptions, while adding to his record for most yards. He earned the triple crown in wide receiver stats. He hauled in 11 catches for 206 yards and two touchdowns to lead the fifth-ranked Buckeyes to a 31-14 win over No. 14 Iowa.

With 6:11 remaining in the third quarter, Smith broke free for a 57-yard touchdown catch, hitting the Heisman pose after he broke the plane of the end zone, for his 36th career touchdown catch. One more than Olave.

Four minutes later, Smith and quarterback Julian Sayin connected on a short route for his 10th catch of the afternoon, as he passed Egbuka for most receptions all time.

After one more quarter of play, here’s where Smith stands through five games in the 2026 season and 34 games as a Buckeye:

  • Jeremiah Smith is now Ohio State’s all-time leader in receptions (207), receiving yards (3,381) and receiving touchdowns (36).
  • Smith has recorded at least 150 receiving yards in four of his five games this season: Ball State (151), Texas (164), Illinois (217) and Iowa (188). That ties the previous Ohio State single-season record of four, shared with David Boston (1998).
  • With 36 career receiving touchdowns, Jeremiah Smith is now four away from passing Braylon Edwards (39) for the most in Big Ten history.
  • Smith is the only player this season with at least 200 receiving yards in back-to-back games and just the second in Big Ten history, joining Indiana’s Ty Fryfogle in 2020.
  • Saturday marked Smith’s 15th career game with at least 100 receiving yards, tying Marvin Harrison Jr. for the most in Ohio State history.
  • Smith currently leads the FBS in receiving yards (823) and receiving touchdowns (9) this season.

Jeremiah Smith Enjoys Historic Day: 4 Takeaways From Ohio State’s

As No. 14 Iowa prepared to host No. 5 Ohio State on Saturday, one of the more notable statistics circulating was that Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz was 5-2 at home against AP top-five teams since 2008.

But there would be no upset in Kinnick Stadium this time.

Ohio State rolled to a resounding 31-14 road victory, fueled in large part by another stellar performance from superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, who coach Ryan Day has compared to LeBron James.

Here are my takeaways from this Week 5 Big Ten showdown:

1. Jeremiah Smith Continues His Ascent To Greatness

Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is the only player with 200-plus receiving yards in back-to-back games this season. (Photo by Matthew Holst/Getty Images) –>

Week after week, Smith continues to make his case as the best player in college football. He already broke Ohio State’s all-time receiving yards record earlier this season, and added more milestones to his résumé in Saturday’s win over Iowa.

In the second quarter, Smith hauled in the 200th catch of his career, rising above three defenders to make an acrobatic 54-yard grab. In the third quarter, he added his 36th career touchdown reception, pulling down a 57-yard bomb from quarterback Julian Sayin to give Ohio State a 24-6 lead. The touchdown made Smith Ohio State’s all-time leader in career touchdown receptions, and he celebrated by striking the Heisman pose.

Four minutes later, Smith made the 206th catch of his career to become the Buckeyes’ all-time leader in receptions.

Smith ended his Saturday with 11 catches for 206 yards (77 yards coming after the catch) and two touchdowns. He now owns every major receiving record in program history.

“Drawing plays up for him is a lot of fun,” Day told the broadcast after the game. “But the most amazing thing about him is his work ethic. He’s a great player and a great leader. I’ve challenged him before – it isn’t just about you, it’s about the team. And that’s just his mindset.

“There’s a generation of young people watching him, but the performances he’s put on the last couple of weeks is contagious. I think the guys feed off it. Best player in the country right here.”

2. Ohio State Is A Threat To Win It All

Julian Sayin improved to 16-3 as Ohio State’s starting quarterback after Saturday’s win against Iowa. (Photo by Matthew Holst/Getty Images) –>

Sometimes, teams need to face a little adversity before they can reach their full potential. For this Buckeyes team, that one-point loss to Texas in Week 2 might end up being the pivotal moment of the season.

Since then, Ohio State has looked increasingly dominant, and it’s not just because of Smith. Sayin has been poised, consistent and steady under pressure. The Buckeyes’ junior quarterback completed 20 of his 27 passing attempts for 324 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday’s win.

Running backs Ja’Kobi Jackson and Bo Jackson have formed a bruising one-two punch in the backfield — Saturday, they combined for 142 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. Defensively, Matt Patricia’s unit has been suffocating. The Buckeyes held the Hawkeyes to 39 rushing yards, and late in the third quarter, Jaylen McClain’s interception set up Ja’Kobi Jackson’s touchdown on the ensuing possession to give Ohio State a 31-6 lead.

Simply put, Ohio State may be back to looking like a perennial national championship contender with weapons all over the field.

3. This Loss Will Not Define Iowa’s Season

Kirk Ferentz is 213-129 in his 28th season as Iowa’s head coach. (Photo by Matthew Holst/Getty Images) –>

There was plenty of pregame buzz surrounding Iowa ahead of the weekend. The Hawkeyes were undefeated and coming off a statement win on the road over Michigan the previous week, when quarterback Hank Brown capped an epic 91-yard drive by throwing a game-winning 16-yard touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee.

There were no such heroics against Ohio State. Iowa kept the Buckeyes somewhat in check during the first half by playing gritty, physical, hard-nosed football. But Smith scored a touchdown just before the break and again in the third quarter, while Patricia’s defense clicked throughout the second half. Iowa put together a nice scoring drive in the fourth quarter, but by then, the outcome was essentially decided.

As we enter October, we’ll learn more about which teams are for real and which teams are not. Iowa can certainly bounce back from this – the Hawkeyes are still 4-1 with a favorable schedule ahead. So can teams like No. 8 Florida and No. 16 Mississippi State, who got similar reality checks in Week 5 with losses against No. 25 Missouri and No. 7 Alabama, respectively.

4. Tough Road Ahead For The Buckeyes

Ohio State has won 15 consecutive conference road-opening games, the longest active streak in the nation. (Photo by Matthew Holst/Getty Images) –>

Ohio State has been out for blood ever since the Texas loss. The Buckeyes remain one of the favorites to make the College Football Playoff, but the road ahead is about to get tougher. They’ll host Maryland next week before diving into the heart of their schedule with games against No. 6 Indiana, No. 18 USC and No. 15 Oregon. They’ll also have to navigate a sneaky-tough Northwestern team before closing the regular season against (currently unbeaten) Nebraska and arch-rival Michigan.

Iowa, meanwhile, has a much more favorable path. Ohio State was the Hawkeyes’ final ranked opponent of the regular season, leaving them with games against Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern and Nebraska down the stretch. If Iowa can take care of business, the Hawkeyes could legitimately finish the regular season with just one loss and put themselves in position to make a case for a CFP berth.

MLB World Series Predictions: Can Anyone Stop the Dodgers’ Three-Peat?

David Ortiz is all in on the Dodgers winning a third consecutive title, but not everyone on the MLB on FOX crew is ready to crown L.A. just yet.

Dontrelle Willis, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Ortiz split their picks evenly between the two franchises, with Jeter and Rodriguez taking New York and Willis and Ortiz siding with Los Angeles. The segment also came with some playful ribbing over who on set got a call from the Yankees’ front office.

Willis got things started with the Dodgers, picking them to beat the Tampa Bay Rays and leaning on the strength of their rotation and overall roster.

“Dodgers over Rays. I know I got a couple Yankee faithfuls up here, but the Dodgers win,” Willis said. “They have that rotation, timely hitting, and most important, experience.”

Jeter, the first of those Yankee faithfuls, went with New York to win it all, riding its pitching staff past a surprise National League contender.

“I got the New York Yankees riding their pitching staff over the surprise team, the San Diego Padres,” Jeter said.

Rodriguez agreed on the champion but chose a different opponent, calling for a rematch of the Yankees-Dodgers World Series from a couple of years ago. His reasoning came down to the arms on both sides.

“I’m gonna go with the Yankees beating the Dodgers in a rematch from a couple of years ago,” Rodriguez said. “Best two pitching staffs in the game — I’m going with pitching and defense.”

With two of his three desk-mates rocking with the men in pinstripes, Willis couldn’t let it slide.

“(Brian)Cashman called both of y’all already. I know the deal,” he said.

Ortiz had the last word and used it to side with Willis, picking Los Angeles over New York. He admitted the Dodgers’ dominance hasn’t gotten old for him, even if it probably should have by now.

“We’ve been watching the Dodgers whooping everybody every year, man, and I still don’t get enough of it. I guess we don’t learn,” Ortiz said. “Come on, man…Dodgers over the Yankees. I believe the Yankees have good pitching, but the Dodgers are still the same. Three-peat. Let’s go.”

Drew Rasmussen Flirts With No-Hitter, Dominates Yankees In Rays’ Game

–>

Drew Rasmussen almost joined an elusive club on Saturday night, but he’ll have to settle for a dominant start that beat the New York Yankees.

In Game 1 of the American League Division Series, Rasmussen dominated the Yankees, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out 10 over eight dominant innings. The Rays got a home run from first baseman Jonathan Aranda in the third inning, which was all the offense they needed.

Ironically, the only Yankees hit came from the last batter that Rasmussen faced – and it was the last batter of that inning. New York catcher Austin Wells ripped a line drive down the right-field line, but he was thrown out at third base trying to stretch his double into a triple.

Designated hitter Ben Rice and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. both walked against Rasmussen. Chisholm stole second base when he reached in the second inning, but center fielder Trent Grisham struck out to end the inning.

There have only been three no-hitters in MLB postseason history. The last came in Game 4 of the 2022 World Series, when Astros right-handers Cristian Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly no-hit the Philadelphia Phillies. Before that, the Phillies’ Roy Halladay (Game 1 of the 2010 NLDS) and the Yankees’ Don Larsen (Game 5 of the World Series) recorded the only other postseason no-nos.

The Yankees swept the Red Sox in a best-of-three series on Tuesday and Wednesday earlier this week, while the Rays were off since Sunday. Game 2 will be on Monday night in Tampa Bay, where AL Cy Young favorite Cam Schiltter will start for New York. Freddy Peralta will start for the Rays.

Cavan Sullivan And Barcelona Prospect Diego Kochen Start For USA

STATE FARM STADIUM (Glendale, Ariz.) – What a way to get your first start for the U.S. men’s national team.

A week after making his senior international debut in the second half of the USA’s 4-1 win over Peru, 20-year-old Barcelona goalkeeper Diego Kochen was named in coach Mauricio Pochettino’s lineup for Saturday’s high-profile exhibition with blood rivals Mexico just outside of Phoenix, where a sellout crowd of 64,000 fans is expected at the home of the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals.

Cavan Sullivan, who turned 17 on Monday, is also in Pochettino’s 11 against El Tri. The Philadelphia Union attacker started against Peru — becoming the second-youngest starter in the 113-year history of the U.S. men’s program and the fourth-youngest overall — and came in off the bench in the Americans’ most recent outing, a 4-2 victory over Chile last Tuesday in St. Louis.

Kochen earned the nod over Matt Freese, who was between the posts for all five U.S. games at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Chris Brady and Brian Schwake are the other two keepers in Pochettino’s current squad.

Kochen didn’t allow a goal in his 45 minutes of action against Peru. Brady and Schwake each played a half vs. Chile, surrendering one goal apiece. The Stars and Stripes will close out this extended four-game international window against Canada on Tuesday in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Although he didn’t make Pochettino’s World Cup roster, Kochen served as a training keeper during the USA’s pre-tournament training camp. Five-time European champs Barça then sent the South Florida native on loan to Danish club Lyngby for the 2026-27 season. Kochen has one clean sheet in nine Danish Superliga games so far, conceding 16 times in all.

Pochettino, the 54-year-old former Tottenham, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager, said during Friday’s pre-match press conference that his lineup would contain a mix of experienced players and youngsters. Two-time World Cup veterans Antonee Robinson, Gio Reyna and Tyler Adams — who the Argentine named U.S. captain on the eve of the contest — round out the team, which also includes 2026 World Cup goalscorers Alex Freeman, Sebastian Berhalter and Auston Trusty.

Eighteen-year-old Red Bull New York striker Julian Hall, who scored in each of his first two U.S. appearances last month, will lead Pochettino’s front line against Mexico. Saturday’s contest marks the second straight start for Hall.
