World Cup Roundup: Austria Advances Thanks To Late Winner; DR

The group stage at the 2026 World Cup ended with fireworks.

DR Congo delivered a thrilling second-half comeback after a sensational goal put them behind, while Lionel Messi scored – yet again. The final action of the day saw Austria survive with a stoppage-time equalizer to keep its tournament alive.

Here is the best of Match Day 17 at the FIFA World Cup.

BEST OF THE DAY

Moment Of The Day

AustriaAustria Survives Thriller Against Algeria

Most days, DR Congo’s comeback win over Uzbekistan would be in this spot. The last time DR Congo was in the World Cup, it was known as Zaire back in 1974. In that appearance, which was the country’s only one ever, it did not score a goal. Now, 52 years later, it’s onto the knockout stage.

Instead, Austria conceded a goal in the 93rd minute that meant it was headed out of the tournament. Then, Michael Gregoritsch got on the end of a cross and headed the ball back toward the center of the box. Sasa Kalajdzic was there to head home and save Austria’s World Cup dreams.

Goal Of The Day

Eldor Shomurodov

Uzbekistan led for 58 minutes of game time through a wonderful goal, the likes of which we have not seen at the World Cup yet.

Shomurodov was played in down the left wing, just inside the 18-yard box. He saw DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau off his line and delivered a sensational chip toward the far post that gave Uzbekistan the lead. It was a shocking goal that Uzbekistan could not make count, ultimately.

Assist Of The Day

Jude Bellingham

Bellingham picked England up in the second half by himself. First, he scored the winning goal to open the scoring. Then, he helped Harry Kane make history.

The Real Madrid star played a wonderful cross into the box that Kane headed home. Kane’s 11th World Cup goal made him England’s all-time leading goalscorer at the tournament, passing Gary Lineker.

Save Of The Day

Diogo Costa

Diogo Costa preserved a draw for Portugal on a couple of occasions.

Costa got down to make a big save early in the first half when Colombia was in control of the game. Striker Jhon Córdoba had a good effort saved by Costa’s right hand. It was one of six saves that Costa made.

Then, late in the game, a cross came in from the left wing and Costa came out and blocked what may have been a tap-in finish at the far post. It was a brave bit of goalkeeping in what was an exciting 0-0 game.

  • England won Group L. The Three Lions have reached a third straight knockout stage and have gotten this far in seven of their last eight tournaments.
  • Harry Kane became England’s all-time leading goalscorer at the World Cup, passing Gary Lineker. That was his 11th World Cup goal.

2026 World Cup Betting Report: ‘USA Is By Far Our

As World Cup odds reach the knockout stage, the top teams are drawing plenty of support in championship futures. France, Argentina, Spain and England are well-backed, as are Portugal and Brazil.

But since this 48-team tournament began on June 11, the most popular team in World Cup futures bets is the United States.

And though the loss to Türkiye was disappointing, the Stars & Stripes bandwagon continues to grow.

“The USA is by far our worst result in the book,” Caesars Sports head of soccer trading Mark Bickerdike said Saturday. “The combination of pre-tournament patriotic money and continued backing after their early performances has created a sizable liability.”

With the knockout stage opening Sunday, Bickerdike helps dive into World Cup futures odds for the remaining 32 teams, starting with the USA.

This page may contain affiliate links to legal sports betting partners. If you sign up or place a wager, FOX Sports may be compensated. Read more about Sports Betting on FOX Sports.

Minor Setback

Through two matches, the U.S. was one of the biggest climbers in 2026 World Cup futures. Pre-tourney, Caesars Sports had the USA at +5000, behind a dozen or so teams.

The impressive 4-1 rout of Paraguay led Caesars to adjust the U.S. to +4000. And the 2-0 blanking of Australia pushed the American side to +2800, inside the top 10.

Thursday night, the USA suffered its first setback, losing to Türkiye 3-2 on a goal in the waning seconds of second-half injury time. That gave Caesars’ risk room just a bit of pause, as the U.S. slipped from +2800 to +3000.

“While the loss to Türkiye had no impact on the group standings, it did slightly dent confidence in the market,” Bickerdike said. “The fact that they lost the game means they will be going into the Bosnia and Herzegovina fixture with slightly less momentum.

“The result also raised some minor questions around the USA’s depth. That’s been enough to see a small drift in their outright price.”

Money From The Masses

But the public betting masses have no such questions, piling on the U.S., which is now No. 9 on Caesars’ World Cup odds board.

“Over the past two weeks, the USA has comfortably been our most popular selection in the ‘Tournament Winner’ market. That was expected to a degree, as a host nation,” Bickerdike said. “But their strong start triggered a significant increase in both wagers and overall money.

“Even after the Türkiye result, we haven’t seen any meaningful pullback in support.”

The U.S. lifting the trophy is still an improbable outcome. If it somehow happens, though, U.S. bookmakers will take a massive bath, while the masses revel in a huge betting victory.

“If the U.S. goes deep into the tournament, that exposure will only continue to grow,” Bickerdike said. “And if they were to lift the trophy, I’d fully expect it to be the biggest loss we’ve ever seen on a soccer tournament.”

Oddsmaker Optimism

As Bickerdike alluded to, the Americans face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32, at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday on FOX. On the three-way moneyline, the USA is a sizable -265 favorite, with Bosnia +700 and Draw +360, as of late Saturday night.

And yes, to remind, there can be a draw through 90 minutes plus injury time. The match then goes to overtime.

So treat this as a public service announcement: If you bet USA on the three-way moneyline, and the match is tied after 90 minutes plus injury time, then you lose that bet, even if the USA wins in overtime or on penalty kicks.

There’s also a ‘To Advance’ market, which accounts for the possibility of overtime/penalty kicks. But the USA is an even bigger favorite in that market, at -625 to Bosnia’s +390.

All those odds suggest that the U.S. advances. Bickerdike, a Brit who knows his soccer, expects that to be the case.

“There will be two contrasting styles of play on show, with the high-tempo and aggressive style of a Mauricio Pochettino team coming up against the compact and direct style of Bosnia and Herzegovina,” he said. “I think this is a good matchup for the USA, and they have a real reason to be optimistic about reaching the Round of 16.

“From that point on, the real tests are likely to begin, with the USA likely to face Belgium and then Spain.”

Belgium is No. 11 in Caesars’ World Cup futures, at +4000, and opens the knockout stage against Senegal, also in a Wednesday match.

Spain, as noted above, is among the best teams in the world, currently the +800 fourth choice to lift the trophy. The only teams ahead of Spain are +350 favorite France, defending champion Argentina (+400) and England (+750).

Spain opens the knockout stage against Austria on Thursday.

Take Me To Your Leaders

Speaking of the top teams, before the Group Stage opened on June 11, France and Spain were co-favorites at Caesars, both +450 to lift the trophy.

However, Spain opened play with a shocking 0-0 draw against surprising Cape Verde. Since that point, France has been the solo favorite, and as noted above, Spain is now the fourth choice in World Cup odds, followed by Portugal and Brazil, both at +1200.

“As you’d expect, France, Spain, Argentina, England and Portugal are well-backed and sit among our most popular teams in the market,” Bickerdike said. “Portugal, in particular, has seen a strong surge in both bets and handle since the tournament began.

“Among that group, Portugal is currently the outcome we’d be most keen to avoid, from a liability perspective.”

Don’t sleep on always-popular Brazil, either.

After a 1-1 opening draw vs. Morocco, Viní Jr. & Co. rolled over Haiti and Scotland by identical 3-0 scores.

There’s also a surging Netherlands squad getting bettors’ attention. The Dutch opened with a 2-2 draw vs. Japan, then swamped Sweden 5-1 and topped Tunisia 3-1.

The Netherlands began the World Cup at +2000 in championship futures, and can still be had at+1600.

“After the USA, the Netherlands represent our second-largest liability. They’ve shortened into +1600 following impressive early results,” Bickerdike said. “Although they have looked good in the group stage, they face a potentially difficult route to the final, which does not work in their favor.”

The Netherlands faces a capable Morocco squad in the Round of 32. If the Dutch clear that hurdle, they’d face a potentially lesser test in the Round of 16, against either Canada or South Africa.

But in the quarterfinals, France or Germany could be waiting, and possibly Spain in the semis.

Viva Mexico?

Mexico rolled through Group A, maxing out with three wins for nine points. El Tri dispatched South Africa 2-0 in the opener, then hung on for a 1-0 win against a solid South Korea squad.

Mexico capped the group stage with a 3-0 victory over Czechia, netting all three goals in the second half. It is now +5000 in World Cup futures odds.

“Mexico has also been a very popular selection, particularly with regional bettors and as another host nation,” Bickerdike said. “They’re currently our third-largest liability in the outright market.

“That said, their route looks difficult, starting with a tough Round of 32 matchup against Ecuador and potentially becoming even more challenging from there. That’s reflected in their current odds.”

Although Ecuador is a distant +17500 (175/1) to win the tournament, the gap between Ecuador and Mexico is small heading into Tuesday’s match. Mexico is a +113 favorite on the three-way moneyline, with Ecuador +260 and Draw +205.

If Mexico advances, then England could well be waiting in the Round of 16, and Brazil and Argentina could stand in the Mexicans’ way as well.

Messi Becomes First Player To Score In Seven Straight World

Lionel Messi became the first player to score in seven consecutive World Cup games while extending his all-time scoring record with his 19th goal in Argentina’s group stage finale against Jordan on Saturday night.

Messi scored on a free kick after being taken down just outside the penalty box in the 80th minute. The low kick, just above the grass surface, split two Jordan defenders into the left corner of the net.

It was his 72nd career goal on a free kick and 12th for Argentina. Messi now has 123 international goals — second all-time to Cristiano Ronaldo’s 145 — in 202 appearances.

The 39-year-old had been one of only three players to score in six consecutive World Cup games along with France striker Just Fontaine and Brazil great Jairzinho.

Messi didn’t start with Argentina already set as the Group J winner and Jordan already eliminated from the knockout stage. He entered in the 60th minute for Lautaro Martinez, who scored on a penalty kick in the first half.

World Cup Best XIs: Mbappé Makes 1st Team, Which Breakout

From hat tricks to even more hat tricks, the superstars we’ve come to expect every day brilliance delivered in the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage, and then some.

But this tournament is also where new stars are born, and that was especially true in the first-ever group stage with 48 teams all competing for a spot in the knockout stage.

To commemorate a historic — and a just outright fun — group stage, here are my First and Second All-Group Stage starting lineups:

JUMP TO: First-Team Group Stage XI | Second-Team Group Stage XI

GOALKEEPER

Unai Simon

Three games, three clean sheets — Spain marched out of its Group without conceding a single goal, and the star keeper barely had to break a sweat doing it.

DEFENDERS

Hiroki Ito

Led Japan’s back line for the full 90 minutes against the Netherlands and Tunisia and doubled as the build-up engine, leading the Samurai Blue in line-breaking passes on the way to the knockouts.

Nico Schlotterbeck

He anchored the defense of Germany’s nine-goal flying start before an ankle injury ended his tournament—a half of group stage dominance too good to leave out.

Manuel Akanji

The calm, ball-playing head at the heart of the defense that won Switzerland’s group as he helped stymie Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina following a steady opening draw with Qatar.

Achraf Hakimi

The right-back and Atlas Lions captain scored a goal and helped set one up in the 4-2 comeback over Haiti in a pivotal performance, and coming down the flank all tournament as Morocco banked seven points.

MIDFIELDERS

Bruno Guimaraes

The midfield maestro pulled the strings for Group C winners Brazil and saved his best for last, laying on two assists in the 3-0 win of Scotland.

Ismaila Sarr

Senegal’s brightest spark with three goals, including the tap-in that sealed the day in a must-win 5-0 performance over Iraq.

Declan Rice

England’s most creative player—ten chances created in the Three Lions’ first two games—the metronome of Group L winners England before earning a breather against Panama.

FORWARDS

Kylian Mbappe

With back-to-back braces against Senegal and Iraq — four goals so far — the Real Madrid man spearheaded France’s perfect nine-point sweep of its group.

Lionel Messi

Messi scored every single one of Argentina’s goals in the opening two matches—a hat-trick against Algeria and a brace against Austria. Oh, and he became the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history.

Ousmane Dembele

The PSG star reminded everyone he’s the reigning Ballon d’Or winner with a stunning video game-esque first-half hat-trick against Norway, one of the fastest in World Cup history, totaling four goals in the group.

GOALKEEPER

Vozinha

The 40-year-old Instagram sensation stole the show with a Man-of-the-Match wall in the goalless stand against Spain, keeping Cape Verde’s debut fairytale alive across three draws and into the last 32.

DEFENDERS

Alex Freeman

The breakout fullback of the group stage — his towering header sealed a 2-0 win over Australia, the first World Cup goal by a U.S. defender in over a decade, as the Americans topped Group D.

Jan-Paul van Hecke

Steady at center-back and a threat from set pieces, heading home in the win over Tunisia as the Dutch cruised to the top of Group F.

Pau Cubarsi

Nineteen years old and completely unbothered — the kid anchored a Spain back line that didn’t concede a single goal across the entire group stage.

Daniel Munoz

A right-back who scored like a winger, netting in back-to-back wins over Uzbekistan and DR Congo as Colombia stormed through the Group K unbeaten.

MIDFIELDERS

Johan Manzambi

The 20-year-old announced himself with a super-sub brace against Bosnia and Herzegovina, then a goal and an assist on his first start to beat Canada — three goals and Switzerland’s top scorer, all from a kid who began the tournament on the bench.

Ismael Saibari

Scored in all three games — opener against Brazil, winner against Scotland, and an equalizer against Haiti — becoming the first player on an African squad to find the net in every group match.

Pedro Vite

One of the tournament’s top ball winners, he ran the show in Ecuador’s stunning 2-1 upset of Germany, stealing the ball to tee up the equalizer before delivering the pass for the winner that sent his country through.

FORWARDS

Vinicius Junior

Scored in every game — four goals, including a brace against Scotland — the relentless engine that carried Brazil to the top of Group C.

Erling Haaland

The towering striker arrived on the World Cup stage with back-to-back braces against Iraq and Senegal — four goals — before being wrapped in cotton wool for the France game.

Deniz Undav

The super sub had five goal involvements (three goals, two assists) off the bench, repeatedly rescued Germany when the starters couldn’t.

How to Watch South Africa vs

South Africa and Canada meet in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match on Sunday, June 28, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. ET from Los Angeles Stadium.

Canada makes its first-ever World Cup knockout appearance with attacking firepower intact but a midfield hole to fill. Ismaël Koné is out for the tournament with a broken leg, leaving Jesse Marsch to lean on Jonathan David and Cyle Larin to carry the offensive load against a disciplined South African back line. The Canadians allowed eight goals in the group stage, six of them against Qatar, but showed they can generate sustained pressure. They’ll need to do it again.

Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana have already beaten the odds just by being here, competing in their first World Cup since hosting in 2010, they advanced out of Group A by winning 1-0 over South Korea while controlling just 30% of the ball. Teboho Mokoena returns from suspension to anchor the midfield, though Themba Zwane sits out due to his red card against Mexico. South Africa won’t outpossess Canada. It doesn’t need to. If Bafana Bafana can absorb pressure, stay compact and force a mistake, this match is theirs to steal.

Canada vs. South Africa Prediction, Odds, Picks For World Cup

All 72 group stage matches are complete, and we are officially on to the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In the first matchup of the knockout stage, Canada will face South Africa on June 28, 2026, at Los Angeles Stadium on FOX.

This will be the first World Cup knockout stage game for both nations.

Despite losing 2-1 to Switzerland on Wednesday, Canada advanced with four points as Group B runner-up, reaching its first World Cup knockout stage in three appearances. The loss snapped Canada’s nine-match unbeaten streak, and it was only the second time in the last 19 games that Canada has allowed multiple goals.

In the opener, Canada got its first World Cup point, drawing Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-1. Then, in its second match, Canada beat nine-man Qatar 6-0 for its first World Cup win ever.

Meanwhile, South Africa was arguably one of the biggest surprises of the group stage, especially after its opening match against Mexico.

In its opener, South Africa recorded two red cards in a 2-0 loss to Mexico. However, Bafana Bafana was able to bounce back with a huge 1-1 draw against Czechia on a 83rd-minute penalty. South Africa followed that result with a huge upset 1-0 win over South Korea to grab second place in Group A and its first knockout stage appearance in its nation’s history.

Let’s check out the odds for the Canada vs. South Africa matchup at FanDuel Sportsbook as of June 28.

Canada vs. South Africa Prediction, Pick

From FOX Sports Wagering Expert, Chris ‘The Bear’ Fallica:

  • South Africa is here after scoring one goal in the run of play in three matches, and it has scored zero or one goal in each of its last eight matches. We can expect another tight, defensive-minded game from Bafana Bafana here. I wouldn’t be shocked if this one ended in a draw, but it should be a stereotypical knockout round match where Under is the play. Canada would love to get something from Alphonso Davies or Stephen Eustaquio here, but it is still up in the air if they are fit to contribute. Take Both Teams to Score — No (-130), Under 2.5 (-138).

How to Watch the World Cup Today: Schedule, Times, TV,

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 rolls on Monday with three marquee matchups, headlined by Vinícius Júnior and Brazil taking on a resilient Japan side and Achraf Hakimi’s Morocco squaring off with the Netherlands in a evening clash. Germany also enters knockout play against Paraguay in the afternoon. All three matches air on FOX and stream live on FOX One.

World Cup Schedule for Monday, June 29

Brazil vs. Japan

  • Time: 1 p.m. ET
  • TV: FOX
  • Stream: Watch 3 days free on FOX One
  • Venue: Houston Stadium, Houston, TX

Player To Watch

Vinicius Junior

The Real Madrid attacker lived up to the lofty expectations placed on him as Brazil’s best offensive player at a World Cup. He is key to Brazil’s hopes of making a deep run and in the group stages, he was electric. When Brazil was trailing Morocco, Vinícius showed up and delivered an equalizer that was one of the best goals in the tournament’s group stage.

Against Japan, a lot is riding on his shoulders. If Vinícius plays well, Japan will likely have a tough day. If the 25-year-old native of Rio de Janeiro does not, Japan might be able to pull off the upset.

Germany vs. Paraguay

  • Time: 4:30 p.m. ET
  • TV: FOX
  • Stream: Watch 3 days free on FOX One
  • Venue: Boston Stadium, Boston, MA

Player To Watch

Kai Havertz

Germany’s tall center forward is the key to unlocking Paraguay’s low block, as he can score in the air and in tight spaces. The Arsenal attacker was not particularly effective in the recent games against the Ivory Coast and Ecuador, although he scored two goals against Curaçao, who was also sitting deep. Look for Germany to try to get Havertz involved early and often. If Germany can muster a quick goal, Paraguay will have to come out of its shell — which is not something it wants to do.

Player To Watch

Brian Brobbey

The Sunderland center forward does not boast the resume of a center forward for a World Cup contender. But Brobbey is a great fit for this Netherlands team. He scored three goals in the group stages and has displayed a lot of great chemistry with his team’s wingers and midfielders. If he is on, he is going to have chances against Morocco, and he is one of his team’s big keys to advancing to the round of 16.

World Cup Round Of 32 Predictions: Picks For Every Match

Alright, familia. Clear your calendars, stock up the fridge and get ready for the World Cup’s newly formatted Round of 32!

I am particularly excited about these matches because this is a brand new, expanded round – meaning that the thrill of knockout, win-or-go home football will come in 16 matches. The chances of dramatic outcomes double from previous editions where the first knockout round featured eight matches.

There are some tasty fixtures right from the get-go, so without urther ado, here is one thing to watch out for and get excited about from each fixture – plus, a prediction on who will win.

Canada vs. South Africa: Two Teams Set For KO Debuts

This is a match of uncharted waters as neither side has ever been in the knockout stages of the World Cup. So to me, this is about approach. How does each team approach this matchup? South Africa was too anxious against Mexico and hesitant against Czechia, but it finally became aggressive against South Korea. So which one will we see? For Canada, it’s all about using that energy as it plays away from home soil for the first time. So Jesse Marsch has to try and remind them there’s a whole country rooting for them in Los Angeles. Oh, and Alphonso Davies is supposedly back.

Prediction: In the end, I predict a high-scoring Canada win. 3-2.

–>

Brazil vs. Japan: Is This The Best Match Of The Round?

From a football perspective, I think this might just be the best game to watch in the Round of 32.

Brazil is looking to continue its path to winning its sixth World Cup title, but let me tell you this right now. Japan is the real deal. It is cohesive, strong collectively without the ball and when it has possession, Hajime Moriyasu’s side plays aesthetically beautiful football. Just look at the goal it scored against Sweden.

And last October, Samurai Blue won 3-2 against the Seleçāo. Granted, it was a friendly and a lot has changed since then, but it still speaks to the danger of the Japanese.

In many ways, its style of play reminds me of ’90s Brazil, full of vigor and creativity.  Throughout each match, Carlo Ancelotti’s team looked stronger as Vinícius Júnior is playing like a player of the tournament right now.

I don’t even dare tell you who will win because I think it will go down to extra time … and possibly penalties.

Prediction: Brazil wins by penalty shootout.

Germany vs. Paraguay: Expect A Chippy Match

I think we all know that this is Germany’s match to lose. However, after a disastrous loss to the U.S., Paraguay woke up and earned four points from its last two matches.

Also, Miguel Almirón is back after serving his one-match ban from the red card he received against Türkiye for covering his mouth. To me, this is about star youngster Julio Enciso as he must play the game of his life in order to shake up this German side.

And remember, Julian Nagelsmann’s side lost to another South American team recently (2-1 to Ecuador), so perhaps, the animosity will still be there. We will see. I’ll tell you one thing. I think Paraguay is going for it in this one. And because of that, we will expect opportunities at both ends.

Prediction: Germany takes care of business with a 3-1 win.

–>

Netherlands vs. Morocco: Two Fullbacks Will Dominate

Ready to face Morocco, Ronald Koeman’s side acknowledged the tenacity that comes with the Atlas Lions, and he has already singled out Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi as the main focus. “He is the star man and a very good right-back, so we have to prepare ourselves very well for him,” he said via Nos

It makes sense as the Dutch attack will leave holes every time it pushes and loses the ball, allowing Morocco’s full backs to go forward, with Hakimi being the obvious threat.

But Denzel Dumfries has been one of the best players in the tournament, and he offers his own threat for the Oranje. Named after Denzel Washington, I interviewed Dumfries a few years ago and asked for his favorite Denzel movie. He told me with a smile, “The Equalizer.” He is undoubtedly playing like that.

Prediction: This is a very difficult one to decipher, but I have to go with the hot hand. The Netherlands wins 2-1 in extra-time.

Cote D’Ivoire vs. Norway: Haaland Faces Tough Test

Fresh from not playing against France, Haaland will be raring to go against Les Elephants – and I think that’s where the ultimate battle will be. Ivory Coast’s defensive unit, which has been shifted around by Emerse Faé, has been very strong and kept two clean sheets in the group stage. I also thought they were unlucky to concede the late goal against Germany, which shows how strong they are at the back.

But now comes Haaland, who is on an absolute mission to secure a Round of 16 spot for Norway and keep up in the Golden Boot race. Should be a great battle.

Prediction: I think this will be a tough, physical encounter, but I’ll opt for Haaland’s continued run. Norway wins 3-2 in extra time.

–>

France vs. Sweden: Mbappé Ready To Get Back To Scoring

Graham Potter’s Swedish side heavily improved against Japan in its final group stage game, but let me just stress that the only way I see Sweden stopping France in this matchup is to lock the team inside the dressing room before kick off.

I just don’t see any other outcome than a French win. What’s more, after not scoring against Norway in a 4-1 rout and seeing Ousmane Dembélé’s hat trick – thus equaling him in the Golden Boot race with four goals – Kylian Mbappé will be on a mission to separate himself with everyone else. And remember, he’s only three goals away from Lionel Messi’s 19 for the all-time World Cup record.

Prediction: Sweden has to be careful here, because it could bring back memories from the loss to the Netherlands. France wins 3-1.

Mexico vs. Ecuador: ‘El Tri’ Nation will be BOUNCING

In my takeaways from Mexico’s win over Czechia, I mentioned how that particular match would be a good test for El Tri because Czechia offered a particular style of physicality. So now comes Ecuador, who will be exactly that.

In terms of the football on the pitch, I am not sure if this fixture will be easy on the eyes for the neutral, but I am certain of one thing: the home crowd in Mexico City will make this an unforgettable evening. Ecuador’s fanbase became the 12th man against Germany, but in this one, the tables will turn because Mexico’s supporters will be out in full force.

It will be a special evening as Javier Aguirre’s side aim to reach the “quinto partido” — though technically, what they want in this one — is to play at least six games at this tournament. A special evening awaits.

Prediction: Mexico takes it 2-1 and heads to the Round of 16.

England vs. DR Congo: Can Three Lions Take Down The Leopards?

England saw it against Ghana and for long periods against Panama. So we will see it once again. Thomas Tuchel has to break the curse of compact, extremely disciplined and smart defensive units. So here comes the DR Congo, which is an almost impenetrable machine.

Since the arrival of Sebastien Desabre, who took charge in 2022, at a time when the national team was really struggling, Les Léopards recruited more European-based players and, from that moment, it has never lost by more than one goal. Now they are in the knockout stages for the first time in World Cup history.

This is a fortress of a team and England has to figure out a way to break through the walls. This will require it to gamble more than it has done all tournament, and that’s DR Congo’s specialty. This should be a very tough game.

Prediction: DR Congo will get this game to extra time, but England wins 2-1.

USA vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina: Co-Hosts Can’t Overlook Anything

Bosnia and Herzegovina will be the lowest-ranked European team that Mauricio Pochettino’s U.S. team will have faced since the Argentinian joined as manager. But let me tell you, the Bosnian team will not be daunted by the opponent, nor the stadium’s crowd, which will be overwhelmingly cheering for the tournament co-hosts.

Remember, this team took down Italy just to get to the tournament, so it knows how to compete against supposedly talented superior sides in a win-or-go-home setting.  The U.S. also hasn’t beaten a UEFA opponent since December 2021, which funnily enough was Bosnia and Herzegovina.

–>

If Pochettino wants to win, he must continue to play the role of underdog. As motivation, he has been using the heroic story of “Miracle on Ice” about the 1980 U.S. men’s ice hockey team and their improbable victory over the Soviet Union in the Winter Olympics. This is, hopefully, the message to the Americans: “Bosnia and Herzegovina is not the underdog, we are.”

Prediction: The U.S. wins it, but it will be tougher than expected. 2-1.

Belgium vs. Senegal: These Teams Can’t Stop Scoring

In their last group stage matches, both sides scored five goals against their opponents as Belgium won 5-1 against New Zealand. Senegal, needing a big score, understood the assignment and routed Iraq 5-0.

Consequently, both teams enter this matchup with confidence and, due to the fact that both also like to push forward in numbers, and are susceptible when they lose the ball, we might see a lot of goals in this one.

For Senegal, it’s about stopping Youri Tielemans. You stop the Aston Villa man, you halt the midfield creativity. Yes, Jeremy Doku is clearly the most dangerous player for Belgium, but sequences often don’t begin without Tielemans. For Belgium, this will be a long day for defenders Maxim De Cuyper and Brandon Mechele’s left side because Senegal forward Ismaila Sarr is absolutely feeling this tournament right now.

Prediction: This will be a very entertaining affair, which ends with a Senegalese win in extra time.

–>

Spain vs. Austria: Will Injuries Derail La Roja’s Quest?

Spain entered this tournament as one of the favorites, and it arrives to this round as a group winner and without a loss. However, it’s been a bit of a topsy-turvy situation for La Roja. There are also a few injuries to be concerned about, including forward Nico Williams and midfielder Yeremy Pino, who were hurt during the win over Uruguay.

In addition, Lamine Yamal’s minutes continue to be assessed as he has played 19, 45 and 75 minutes respectively in the first three matches. Then there’s Liverpool’s new signing Víctor Muñoz, who has had a calf issue and has not played at the tournament yet. So that means all of Spain’s wingers have an issue.

“If we can’t play with wingers, we’ll play without wingers,” said Spain manager Luis de la Fuente.

That could play to Austria’s strengths, who like to exploit on the counter.

Prediction: I see Spain going through and for Lamine Yamal to deliver. La Roja wins 2-0.

Portugal vs. Croatia: A Throwback For Two Legends

Cristiano Ronaldo (41) and Luka Modrić (40) have a very special relationship as they shared six years at Real Madrid, collectively winning 13 trophies, including four in the Champions League. They share a very close bond, always speaking highly of each other.

Now they will be at opposing ends of the pitch in one last dance in Toronto. This will be a matchup for the nostalgic in all of us, but in the end, I think it’s one where depth outwits grit.

Prediction: I see penalties in this one and Portugal outlasts the evening.

–>

Switzerland vs. Algeria: A Tale of Contrasting Styles

This game reminds me of the famous quote from historian and author Henry Adams, “Chaos often breeds life, when order breeds habit.”

I think that the Swiss, out of any team at the World Cup, have so far been the most disciplined and regimented. It is because it has been doing this in major tournaments for a long time now, with essentially the same personnel. Manager Murat Yakin has been in charge since 2021 and every single member of the squad – led by veterans Granit Xhaka and Manuel Akanji – knows exactly what it has to do and how to do it.

The Swiss have been to two consecutive Round of 16 appearances in the last two major competitions (2022 World Cup and 2024 Euros). At this tournament, in a group where the co-host Canada was meant to top it, it was Switzerland who stole the show. So for this fixture, Vancouver will feel like Basel.

As for Algeria, after the chaotic 3-3 result against Austria, which consequently placed Les Fennecs in third place in Group J, this is a side that needs chaotic circumstances in order to thrive. There is also so much individual talent. From Rafik Belghali to the veteran Riyad Mahrez, this team can definitely frustrate the European side with moments of genius. Taking advantage of set pieces will also be key.

Prediction: If you’re asking me to choose—- I think that in a world of chaos—I am opting for order. Switzerland wins 2-0.

Australia vs. Egypt: Will Salah Return To Face The Socceroos?

The biggest talking point, however, is about Mohamed Salah’s fitness as the former Liverpool star and current free agent asked to come off in the 57th minute during Egypt’s dramatic draw with Iran.

“He felt something so he will undergo scans, and we hope for the best,” said Egypt manager Hossam Hassan. “I talked to him and he said it’s going to be okay, it’s not a big injury, but we have to leave it with the medical staff.”

The hope for all Egyptians, is that their superstar can be ready for a massive match as Egypt looks to make it to the Round of 16 for the first time since 1934.

Prediction: I see Egypt just about scraping through in a 1-0 win in extra time.

–>

Cape Verde vs. Argentina: Cinderella Story Meets Messi’s Last Dance

At this point, I think it will be Lionel Messi that asks for Vozinha’s shirt rather than the other way around when this game concludes.

Cape Verde’s story is the most remarkable at this World Cup. Nothing else comes close. And the 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozhina, who has kept two clean sheets in the team’s magnificent draws against Spain and Saudi Arabia, whilst managing another point against Uruguay, has made him the star of the tournament thus far.

And now comes the defending champions. Lionel Messi and Co. prepare to go against one of the better defensive units in the tournament.

All odds are against the archipelago country, for that there is no doubt. But there is absolutely nothing to take for granted here and, despite being the smallest African nation to ever make the knockout stage, Argentina will not patronize this matchup.

After all, Lionel Messi knows all too well what it means to be overlooked for your size.

Prediction: I think this is where the magic ends for Cape Verde. Argentina wins 2-0.

Colombia vs. Ghana: Pure Entertainment Expected

You all know how I feel about Los Cafeteros. They are the real deal and, thanks to their incredible support (the largest South American community in the U.S.), folks are starting to take notice. And just like the fans showed up against Portugal in Miami, they will show up once again in Kansas City against Ghana.

This is about a brilliant attacking line against a defiant defensive unit. Luis Díaz is not the only one who can hurt any opponent. There’s also Jhon Arias, Jhon Córdoba, Luis Suárez and Juan Fer Quintero. It’s overwhelming. But Colombia needs James Rodríguez to be at his best in order to pull the chains.

For me, fullback Daniel Múñoz is the one to watch. He didn’t start against Portugal in order to let him recover, so he only came on in the 86th minute. But immediately, he was a threat. So Gideon Mensah has a lot to do.

But Ghana has already shown what it can do when it doesn’t have the ball against strong teams (see its 0-0 draw against England), so the aim is for compact marking and using the talent upfront to hit Colombia when recovering possession.

The wonderful Antoine Semenyo needs to play the game of his life in this one, as the Ghana star has been relatively quiet to his standards.

Prediction: In the end, I see Colombia going through after extra-time, 3-2.
