This past week, the opening World Cup match on each day gave us the most fireworks. 

The Netherlands struck four goals against Sweden on Saturday, a feat equaled by Spain in its win over Saudi Arabia. On Monday, Lionel Messi set the record for most World Cup goals scored, while on Tuesday Cristiano Ronaldo reminded the world of what he’s still capable of.

Today, it was Ecuador that brought the chaos with a late win over Germany that saw the South American side qualify for the round of 32.

Among the opening matches on Friday? Norway vs. France. Get your popcorn – or kettle corn – ready.

Moment Of The Day

After getting one point from its first two matches in Group E against the Ivory Coast and Curaçao, Ecuador had to beat Germany to advance to the round of 32.

So, naturally, the Ecuadorians conceded in the second minute. Leroy Sané gave Germany an early lead, but it only lasted seven minutes before Nilson Angulo equalized with a great goal.

Tension was building when Ecuador got a corner kick in the 77th minute. Kevin Rodríguez headed the cross right toward Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, but Plata got his left foot on the ball first to poke home the goal Ecuador needed.

With it, Ecuador is into the knockout stages.

Goal Of The Day

Sweden needed to win or draw against Japan, which got the opening goal on Thursday at Dallas Stadium. The Swedes are known for their strikers – Viktor Gyokeres (Arsenal) and Alexander Isak (Liverpool) – but it was another playmaker who stepped up.

Elanga picked up possession on the right wing and unleashed a beautiful curling effort that snuck into the far post of Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Sweden held on for the draw to book a spot into the round of 32 thanks to the Newcastle winger’s effort.

Assist Of The Day

Ivory Coast was in control the entire time against Curaçao, and it doubled its lead in the second half after a decisive pass from Sangaré.

The Nottingham Forrest midfielder picked up the ball and played Nicolas Pépé in very well, with his pass barely eluding a Bosnian defender. From there, Pépé’s second goal of the game was inevitable.

Save Of The Day

A draw was enough for both Sweden and Japan to advance to the round of 32, but neither team played for a draw.

The best chance of a scoreless first half was right before halftime, when Japanese winger Keito Nakamura had a shot saved by Zetterstrom after a tidy bit of play at the edge of the 18-yard box. The Derby County keeper dove to his left and made sure the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes.

Ecuador vs. Germany

• This is the second time that Ecuador has qualified for the World Cup knockout stage. The first time was in 2006, when it lost 1-0 to England in the round of 16.

The 2026 World Cup has rewritten the record books at every turn, including Lionel Messi becoming the all-time scorer in the history of the tournament.

And now, we’ve seen the most goals scored at any edition of soccer’s marquee event – thanks to USA’s Auston Trusty. 

Trusty’s strike just two minutes into the first half against Türkiye on Thursday night was this tournament’s 173rd goal, which surpassed the previous record of 172 goals set in 2022.

The United States fell 3-2 after conceding in the final minute, extending the tally to 177.

The tournament is still in the group stage and has now reached the record with only 60 matches played with 44 left to play. By comparison, the 2022 World Cup needed all 64 matches to produce 172 goals, highlighting the explosive attacking play on display this year.

The milestone is even more notable given it came during the first expanded World Cup, which grew from 32 to 48 teams. Even so, teams are averaging 2.88 goals per match as attacks continue to outpace defenses.

For comparison, France’s Kylian Mbappé led the 2022 World Cup with eight goals, while Messi has five through group play. With Argentina still in the mix and the tournament’s scoring pace on track to exceed 200 goals, he could push into double digits if the run continues.

Trusty’s goal came in a loss, but it still became part of a record-setting World Cup that shows no signs of slowing down.

In one of the most defensive games so far at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Australia and Paraguay played to a 0-0 draw at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Thursday night. While winning would have been a positive, neither team wanted to risk comprising its defense formations to squander a result.

With each team securing a point, Australia finished second in Group D — USA won the group — with four points, while Paraguay finished third, also with four points. Only goal differential separated the two teams.

Australia now moves to the round of 32, while Paraguay must wait to see the final standings for the third-place teams. The likelihood, however, is that La Albirroja have done enough to be within the top-eight third-place teams advancing to the knockout round.

Here are my takeaways from the draw:

1. Paraguay’s Cautious Defensive Approach Only Kind Of Worked …

Coming into this game, we knew Australia would take a more conservative approach, understanding a draw would be just fine. It remained an open question, however, how Paraguay would handle the game. 

Would La Albirroja be desperate to push for a win and take risks? Or would the team minimize risks and accept a draw, knowing that four points would likely be enough to advance?

It quickly became apparent that Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro’s first priority was to not make any costly mistakes. He rolled out a five-man backline to begin the game. In front of them were three central midfielders: Matias Galarza of Atlanta United on the left side, Andrés Cubas of the Vancouver Whitecaps in the middle and Diego Gomez, formerly of Inter Miami, on the right side.

And the first half went exactly as you would expect with this scenario. Paraguay rarely got forward and had one very weak shot, which was a header off an off-target throw-in.

Paraguay didn’t get its first corner of the match until the 53rd minute, and it was only the team’s second of the tournament. 

As the second half progressed, Paraguay began to possess more and more of the ball but did not seem to want to do much with it. Its possession was almost part of its defensive approach to keep Australia from being able to find a winner.

The biggest setback for Paraguay in this approach is that with defending, it opened the team up to more yellow-card risks. In the second half, Gomez was shown a yellow that will suspend him for the round of 32, if the team advances.

2. … And Same For Tony Popovic’s Socceroos 

Australia manager Tony Popovic was more interested in having his team push forward than Alfaro was, as a goal would slam the door shut on any bad luck that could ruin its second-place standing.

But Australia’s attack rarely saw an aggressive approach where it pushed numbers into the final third. Instead, it took shots from distance or only had a few attackers driving at Paraguay’s backline. 

Popovic always ensured his team had numbers back to defend.

After the second half hydration break, Australia then shifted to a five-man backline with its midfielders also sitting deep to cut off the passing lanes into the final third. That was not much of a risk as Paraguay only rarely had players deep enough to make dangerous runs.

3. MLS Defender Lucas Herrington Emerged With Potential

Even as Australia was clearly content with a draw, Popovic still needed to send out a lineup he believed would not make mistakes under pressure.

One of his most surprising decisions was to go with central defender Lucas Herrington, who had yet to play in this tournament and who only had four caps before this game. The 18-year-old defender is currently in the middle of a breakout season with the Colorado Rapids in MLS.

Thursday, he was not tested very often defensively with Paraguay sitting back, but he was able to deal with whatever came his way. Playing on the left side of a three-man backline, he made four clearances and two tackles while winning most of his duels.

On the ball, he showed a lot of efficiency with his passing, completing 62-of-67 attempts, and over the course of 90 minutes, he did what was asked of him. 

But this was a night to remember for Herrington. He got this opportunity at an important moment on the world’s biggest stage, and it will certainly help him moving forward in his promising career.

4. Australia’s Through, And Paraguay Waits 

With the 0-0 draw, Australia secured second place in the group. It was a strange campaign for the Socceroos, who scored twice against the run of play against Türkiye in a 2-0 win but never once looked in control of any game. Popovic’s team handled specific moments well outside the U.S. game, namely the two counter-attacking goals and then on defense the rest of the way.

Next up for Australia will be the runner-up in Group G in the round of 32, which will either be Egypt, Belgium or Iran. Based on the expectations many had for this team before the tournament, that is not a bad position.

As for Paraguay, four points should be enough to advance, but La Albirroja ended the night ranked fourth among the third-place teams with six more groups still to complete group play. Paraguay will likely be nervous, but it is still in a better situation than many figured it would be in after an ugly 4-1 loss to the United States in the World Cup opener.

The U.S. men’s national team won Group D, but it ended group play on a bit of a dud. However, former USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan doesn’t want the fan base to sound the alarm. 

After the USA gave up a late goal in its 3-2 loss to Türkiye, Guzan is still feeling optimistic about the Stars and Stripes ahead of its round of 32 matchup against Bosnia and Herzegovina.  

“Listen, all I was saying was there’s been a lot of talk, a lot of hype within the last two games around this U.S. team,” Guzan said. “For all of our new USA fans. Everyone, calm down. Everyone, take a deep breath.”

To Guzan’s point, the USA mostly started its backups on Thursday evening. Nine of the 11 players in its starting lineup made their first start in the 2026 World Cup, with Matt Turner filling in for Matt Freese in net. It also won the possession battle (52-48), outshot Türkiye (18-9) and had more shots on target (7-3). On top of that, the USA had more touches in the opponent’s box (37-24) than Türkiye.

Still, the loss might have exposed some defensive vulnerabilities for the USA. FOX Sports’ Maurice Edu dished out a rating of 5 or lower for all four of the USA’s starting defenders, as the team gave up two goals early in the first half. 

But Thursday’s loss didn’t change anything for the USA’s path in the knockout stage. It’ll still face Bosnia and Herzegovina after winning Group D, securing two wins in its first two matches as it outscored its opponents by five goals.

That’s why Guzan urged supporters to maintain a big-picture view of the tournament rather than panicking over a single adverse result, emphasizing that the team’s internal confidence remains entirely intact as they prepare for their upcoming knockout opponent. 

“We are OK,” Guzan said. “We’re going into the round of 32. This result tonight did not change anything. We still top the group, we are still going into this round to a [round of] 32 game against Bosnia with confidence, with belief, jump on board, stay on board, and let’s ride this thing to the final.”
