Caleb Williams’ return from injury didn’t disappoint, but Chicago’s fourth-quarter performance left plenty to be desired. 

After building a 31-7 lead, the Bears relaxed and nearly let the Falcons back in the game. Atlanta cut it to a one-possession lead with under five minutes to go, but a strip sack of Michael Penix ended the rally.

In the end, Atlanta just couldn’t keep up with Chicago’s high-powered offense. Falling behind early took Bijan Robinson out of the game, and Penix struggled to match his draft classmate throw-for-throw before catching fire late.

The BYU Cougars have officially stamped its mark on the college football landscape.

On Saturday night, the Cougars pulled off an upset against No. 2-ranked Notre Dame for the biggest win in program history. Its 28-24 victory was more than just another win, but it was a matchup quarterback Bear Bachmeier had marked on his calendar for years.

Before committing to BYU during the 2025 recruiting cycle, Bachmeier visited South Bend and nearly committed to Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish.

However, until Bachmeier’s post-game press conference, it wasn’t known that Notre Dame apparently disrespected him during his visit. He spoke to reporters after the game highlighting this game as extra motivation, and it goes back to his recruting experience with the program.

“[Coach Kalani Sitake] won’t like this because I’m talking about myself, but out of high school Notre Dame disrespected me and my family pretty badly,” Bachmeier said. “I wasn’t going to lose to those guys. There was no way I was going to lose to those guys tonight.”

Bachmeier made the most of his revenge game against the Fighting Irish on Saturday night, delivering one of the best performances of his career. He completed 23-of-36 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown, while adding 45 yards and two scores on the ground.

His moment came late in the fourth quarter when he threw a go-ahead six-yard touchdown to tight end Walker Lyons, giving the Cougars the lead with 1:47 remaining. 

All night, Bachmeier played with a chip on his shoulder and put the offense on his back in the absence of running back LJ Martin. Whether watching from the sidelines, playing on the field, or listening from the broadcast booth, it was clear this was more than just a game for him.

During his visit to South Bend, Bachmeier intended to commit, but Notre Dame’s staff was reportedly focused on five-star Deuce Knight the entire time. Once Knight committed, Bachmeier was left out in the cold, which could be where his feeling of disrespect stems from.

Knight ended up decommitting from Notre Dame and flipped to Auburn under head coach Hugh Freeze. Then Bachmeier committed to the Cougars and found immediate playing time, leading the program to a 12-2 record and a Pop-Tarts Bowl win.

With the recruitment drama behind him and a strong resume built at BYU, it appears that everything worked out for Bachmeier and his family. The Cougars are now ranked No. 2 in the latest AP Poll, marking their highest ranking since 1984.

Facing a 34-10 fourth-quarter deficit, the New York Giants officially benched quarterback Jameis Winston for J.J. McCarthy.

Winston endured a rough outing on Sunday, completing just 14 of 26 passes for 152 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The offense continued its downfield struggles, putting up a meager 10 offensive points with Winston against a Saints defense allowing 30.2 points per game.

McCarthy provided an immediate spark upon entering the game. He nearly engineered a massive comeback against the Saints, driving the New York offense to three consecutive scoring drives. The Giants lost 34-27 to fall to 3-2-1, but McCarthy flashed the kind of potential the Giants need moving forward.

In just one quarter of action, he posted 243 passing yards and a touchdown, alongside 26 rushing yards. The touchdown came on a 24-yard strike to tight end Isaiah Likely.

Despite the early interception, McCarthy showed genuine promise. That glimpse of potential is huge for a Giants offense seeking long-term stability at quarterback after Jaxson Dart was lost for the season to a knee injury.

McCarthy went 6-4 as a starter last season, but his underlying numbers painted a concerning picture despite the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive weapons. He completed 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, finishing with a 35.6 QBR.

The former Michigan star may have struggled statistically early in his career, but he has always found ways to keep his teams competitive. That’s exactly what he did for Harbaugh’s Giants on Sunday afternoon, fighting until the very end.

Winston has played well since taking over for Dart, but Sunday afternoon was an off day for the veteran quarterback. In a lopsided game, Harbaugh likely put McCarthy in to see what he has moving forward, as the quarterback position remains a question mark for the offense.

The Los Angeles Chargers’ wide receiver room took another hit Sunday. 

Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey was ruled out against the Kansas City Chiefs with a concussion, the team announced.

McConkey was sidelined due to a head injury in the first half of the game at Arrowhead Stadium and was initially evaluated before the team made the ruling official. 

The Chargers were trailing the Chiefs 9-3 when McConkey was ruled out.

McConkey finished the game with one reception for 17 yards. McConkey had 12 receptions for 183 yards and one touchdown through his first four appearances this season.

The injury came just as McConkey worked his way back on the field from another injury. He entered Sunday with no injury designation after dealing with a lingering foot injury, and he went from limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday to a full participant Friday. 

McConkey’s absence leaves the Chargers thin at wideout. With McConkey out and Tre’ Harris sidelined by a hamstring injury, Los Angeles will likely lean on Quentin Johnston as its top receiver.

The Chargers came into Sunday still searching for their first win of the season at 0-5, while the Chiefs entered 4-0 and atop the AFC West.

The Iceman is back.

Three weeks away from the field didn’t slow down Caleb Williams, who was named Tom Brady’s LFG Player of the Game after a strong return from a hamstring injury in the Chicago Bears’ 31-23 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

The Bears quarterback completed 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions to help Chicago improve to 4-2 with its win over Atlanta. 

Williams, who hadn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings, completed his first 12 passes, the longest streak to start a game in his career. He went 6-for-6 on the opening drive, capping it with a 14-yard touchdown pass to tight end Colston Loveland for his 50th career touchdown pass.

Brady, who called the game on FOX alongside Kevin Burkhardt, opened his conversation with Williams by saying he could see the quarterback was ready before the game even started.

“Man, you were locked in from the very start,” Brady said. “You were locked in pre-game warm-up when I saw you. So focused.”

Williams said the emotions were running high after sitting out, and he wanted to convert that momentum to winning football.

“I wanted to kind of channel that energy of getting back out here with the guys. It’s what I love to do,” Williams said. “I love being out here with my guys. They’re my brothers. I’ve told them that over and over again. Not being able to be out there was really frustrating for me, and being able to get back out here and perform… it’s great to come out with a win.”

The Bears jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and led 31-7 in the fourth before Atlanta scored 16 straight points, including two touchdown catches by Kyle Pitts and two two-point conversions, to cut it to 31-23. Williams acknowledged that Chicago has to clean things up.

“We’ve got to get better. We’ve got to get better with penalties and not allowing teams to come back and get close like that.”

Williams spread the ball around, and Brady asked about getting Loveland and wide receiver Luther Burden III involved. Burden had a big day with eight catches on eight targets for 95 yards. 

Brady asked how hard the offense is to stop when everyone is rolling.

“We know who we got … we’ve got to be able to just put the ball in their hands, and that’s part of my job,” Williams said. “That’s part of coach’s job, and we’re going to keep trying to do that for the rest of the year.”

Williams credited his playmakers one by one, calling them all “problem children,” including a nod to a third-down catch by Rome Odunze, a sail-route catch by Burden and a check-down to Loveland that got Chicago close.

“The big-time playmakers show up,” Williams said, “I just got to do a good job of getting the ball in their hands.”

Williams has also had some of the best performances of his young career with Brady in the booth.

“I always seem to perform when you’re here, man,” Williams said to Brady afterwards.

The performance was a welcome turnaround for the Bears, who were coming off a 31-7 loss at Green Bay in Week 5 and went 2-1 in Williams’ absence with Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent starting.

Brady closed the conversation by wishing Williams well, with a quick turnaround on the schedule.

“Keep it up, rest up,” Brady said. “I know you got a short turnaround Thursday night. Good luck.”

Chicago hosts the New England Patriots on Thursday.

Should the final penalty in the Los Angeles Rams’ 18-16 loss to the Cardinals have been called? The personal foul called against Rams cornerback Josh Wallace set the Cardinals up for a game-winning field goal to seal their second win this season.

The flag flew after Arizona receiver Jalen Brooks caught a 21-yard pass from Jacoby Brissett and fell on Wallace’s shoulder.

As controversy over the personal foul emerged, FOX Sports’ rules analyst Mike Pereira weighed in on why the call could’ve been overturned in the Rams’ favor.

“Well, my first thought is this is one that replay could take off if there’s no contact. There is contact, but is it enough contact that’s not forceable? … For me, that’s one I do not think needs to be called,” Pereira said on FOX’s broadcast of Sunday’s game. 

With the penalty, the Cardinals were able to move the ball 36 yards down the field on the opening play of the final drive. That placed them at the Rams’ 29-yard line with 41 seconds left. Arizona picked up five yards on a carry the next play, and it was eventually set up to kick a 43-yard field goal attempt.

Cardinals kicker Chad Ryland was able to convert, making his sixth field goal of the day as time expired to pick up the upset win. 

Considering the circumstances of the penalty called on Wallace, Olsen also disagreed with the penalty call.  

“It looked, to me, like Brooks is just landing on Wallace’s right shoulder,” Olsen added.

The Cardinals’ win over the Rams marked their first victory over NFC West foes since the 2024 season, and it was also the biggest upset of this NFL season as Arizona was 12.5-point underdogs. As for the Rams, they dropped to 2-4 as they head into a road contest against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7.

Phoenix Raceway (Avondale, Ariz.) — Now there’s a Chase.

A race that started with no driver within 48 points of the leader and with three sitting 49 to 65 points behind, ended with six drivers within 56 points of leader Kyle Larson.

Tyler Reddick — the driver who is now 56 points back — started the day 114 back. Reddick made his way into Victory Lane, while Larson’s miserable race ended 31 laps early with him in 34th.

Three races remain in the season and Larson is clinging to a five-point lead on Christopher Bell. Ahead are races at Talladega, Martinsville and Homestead with Larson seeking his third Cup title.

“It is what it is,” Larson told me and other reporters after exiting the track medical center. “It’s just part of racing.”

Here are my takeaways:

1. Larson Struggles; Field Tightens

Kyle Larson’s bad day gave other drivers in The Chase more hope.

Before a flat tire resulted in a crash that ended his day, Larson struggled throughout the race at Phoenix. 

The Hendrick driver had finished third or fourth in six of the last seven races at Phoenix, even though he hasn’t always felt that strong.

“I’m not surprised,” Larson said. “I think you guys thought I was lying to you all week when I said we weren’t good here. I didn’t expect to be good, but I didn’t expect to be that bad, either.

“We were just trying to fight as much as we could and just scratch and claw for whatever finish we could get.”

Chase Briscoe (eighth at Phoenix) now sits 24 points behind, Hamlin (28th) is 31 points back, Ryan Blaney (second) is within 40 points, Joey Logano (sixth) is within 44 and then Reddick sits at 56. 

“I figured it would tighten up after today anyways, just based off history,” Larson said. “Obviously, I wanted to finish to get the points we could. … I figured today would not be great and we would have to go next week and execute. So really, the plan hasn’t changed.”

2. Hamlin Squanders Opportunity

After another lackluster finish, Hamlin said that nothing surprises him.

Hamlin had a flat tire that didn’t end his day but put him a lap down as the caution came out just after he pitted. 

He would have gotten the free pass to get back on the lead lap, but he sped entering pit road as he concentrated on just steering the car and not on his speed.

Still seeking his first title in a career where he has 64 Cup wins, Hamlin can only wonder what could have been as his 2026 Chase has not mirrored his regular season, where he topped the standings.

“Some things are meant to be, and some things are not meant to be,” Hamlin told me and other reporters after the race. “There have been so many cards that I’ve been dealt in my career in these playoffs or Chase. Nothing surprises me. I’m not shell-shocked because I’ve been here.”

Hamlin said he did not believe the tire issues were a team-inflicted issue by using low air pressures. 

3. Reddick Finds Victory Lane Again

Tyler Reddick won the day in the desert, putting himself firmly into The Chase conversation.

Tyler Reddick won five of the first nine races of the 2026 season and took a 23-race winless streak into Phoenix.

He snapped that winless streak and put himself back in The Chase mix in one swoop, where he restarted fourth but the first driver with two fresh tires on a restart with 19 laps remaining. It took him less than two laps to snag the lead and hold off the field for the win.

“It’s been a long time,” Reddick said in his post-race news conference, about an hour after he climbed the track catch fence in celebration. “To go six months without getting it done was tough on the [team].

“But it was really cool in the fashion we did it. … It wasn’t really a perfectly-executed day for us again, but we just stayed in the mix, fought our way back up there, as the other drivers and teams had mistakes and miscues.”

4. Bell, Briscoe, Logano, Blaney Still In Mix

Ryan Blaney is hopeful he and his team can keep carving into the lead for The Chase.

Bell, Briscoe, Blaney and Logano all cut at least 40 points into Larson’s lead with their solid days.

It could have been more with the win (Reddick cut 58 points), but they will take what the solid finish gave them in combination with Larson’s struggles.

“[Gained] a lot of points today. Hard to be upset about that,” Blaney said in his USA Sports interview afterward. “[We’ll] try to go the next two weeks and do the same.”

4 ½. What’s Next: Talladega Superspeedway

The highly unpredictable Talladega will be certain to shake up the standings again as drivers try to navigate the draft without getting caught up in the typical crashes.

NASCAR has changed the rear spoiler from four inches to 3.5 inches. This is to give the drivers less rear downforce, potentially giving them the ability to maneuver better because they will have a little bit more room to react to moves by others.

But the drivers will have to depend on teammates — or at least manufacturer brethren — for help in the draft because a push from behind is vital to move forward.

“We’ll do our best to try and populate [with Toyotas] at the front as best we can,” Reddick said.
