The Arch Manning experience hasn’t gone as expected for the Texas Longhorns. Following back-to-back losses to unranked Oklahoma and Florida, the Longhorns tumbled 12 spots in the latest AP Poll rankings to No. 19. 

For a program featuring one of the sport’s highest-paid rosters, preseason national championship expectations have quickly given way to damage control. Now, head coach Steve Sarkisian may be laying the groundwork for a quarterback change to spark the offense.

According to ESPN, redshirt freshman quarterback KJ Lacey Jr. is expected to see an uptick in first-team reps during practice this week. For now, however, Manning is expected to start against No. 7 Ole Miss.

All signs point toward Lacey eventually seeing the field if Manning continues to struggle in SEC play. The road ahead doesn’t get any easier, with the Rebels coming to Austin this week before the Longhorns gear up for the rest of their conference slate.

A four-star recruit in the 2025 class, Lacey was ranked as the No. 19 quarterback in the nation by 247Sports. While his action in Austin has been limited so far, he’s been efficient when called upon, completing 7 of 8 passes for 63 yards in two appearances this season.

The pressure on Manning has never been higher, as inconsistent play has raised serious questions about his hold on the starting job. He delivered a strong performance in a win over Ohio State earlier this season, but his recent struggles have left the door open for a potential benching. 

Despite an upgraded supporting cast that includes receiver Cam Coleman and running backs Raleek Brown and Hollywood Smothers, Manning has taken a step back. Through six games, he’s completing 63.9% of his passes with 1,295 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. In Saturday’s loss against Florida, Manning threw for just 173 yards and one touchdown, despite the Gators ranking 121st of 138 teams in the FBS in passing yards allowed per game.

With no margin for error left on their schedule, the Longhorns likely need to run the table to stay in the College Football Playoff picture. Sarkisian faces immense pressure not only to keep winning, but also to evaluate whether a decision at quarterback is necessary.

The Kansas Jayhawks have added All-Big Ten forward Trey Kaufman-Renn, who played four seasons at the Purdue Boilermakers before getting picked by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round of the NBA draft, filling their biggest perceived hole on the eve of the college basketball season.

Jayhawks coach Bill Self announced his transfer Monday, hours before the release of the men’s preseason AP Top 25 poll. The 24-year-old Kaufman-Renn has enrolled in classes at Kansas and began practicing with the team on Sunday.

“He reached the national championship game, the Elite Eight and the Sweet 16 at Purdue, and has been extremely well-drilled and well-coached,” Self said in a statement. “Even though it’s late in the process, because of his basketball IQ, we think his transition will be quicker than most put in the same circumstance.”

The 59th overall pick in the June draft, Kaufman-Renn intends to play another season of college basketball after the NCAA’s sudden and chaos-inducing rule change designed to allow student-athletes to play five seasons over a five-year span.

The rule was not intended to include players who had finished their careers this past season. But the gray area it created has led to a wave of lawsuits across the country, as athletes in all sports seek another year of eligibility. Kaufman-Renn was granted a preliminary injunction earlier this month, making the 6-foot-9 power forward eligible to play for Kansas for the time being.

Kaufman-Renn graduated from high school in 2021 but didn’t suit up his first season at Purdue because of a knee injury. He played the following four seasons, appearing in 147 games, and helped Purdue reach the national championship game two years ago.

Jayhawks guards Melvin Council Jr. and Tre White also have won preliminary injunctions to play another season for them.

Kaufman-Renn joins a lineup headlined by Council and White alongside Tyran Stokes, the consensus No. 1 recruit in the nation, and fellow five-star freshman Taylen Kinney. His addition also fills a need in the post, where Flory Bidunga’s transfer to the Louisville Cardinals and Bryson Tiller’s departure for rival Missouri Tigers had left a glaring hole in the roster.

Kaufman-Renn averaged 20.1 points and 6.5 rebounds as a junior and 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds this past season at Purdue. He also appeared in five games for the Timberwolves during the NBA’s summer league, averaging 6.6 points and 3.8 rebounds.

What To Know: Can anyone catch Victor Wembanyama? At -360, he’s the overwhelming favorite after averaging 3.1 blocks and 11.5 rebounds last season. Opponents had a much tougher time scoring with him on the floor, as his team allowed 9.1 fewer points per 100 possessions than when he sat. Wemby looks to win this award in back-to-back seasons. 

What To Know: Holmgren is Wembanyama’s closest challenger at +1200, but he has some major ground to make up. He averaged 1.9 blocks and 8.9 rebounds last season, while his team allowed 6.5 fewer points per 100 possessions with him on the court. Could his first Defensive Player of the Year award be next?

What To Know: The big men have company. Thompson has the third-best odds at +2500 after averaging 2.0 steals and 0.9 blocks in just 26 minutes per game last season. His ability to disrupt offenses gives him a chance to break through in a race often dominated by rim protectors.

What To Know: Could Gobert make history with a fifth Defensive Player of the Year award? The four-time winner sits at +3000 after averaging 11.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks last season. His defensive impact remains hard to ignore: His team allowed nine fewer points per 100 possessions with him on the floor last season. 

What To Know: At +4000, Mobley offers another intriguing option further down the board. He averaged 1.7 blocks and 9.0 rebounds last season and already has a Defensive Player of the Year award on his résumé. Can he make another run at the honor? The competition has gotten a lot tougher.

Phoenix Raceway (Avondale, Ariz.) — Christopher Bell finished second at Charlotte a week ago and left fuming. He finished fourth Sunday at Phoenix and left hopeful.

That’s what The Chase will do to drivers. 

It’ll make them stew over missed opportunities. Then it will make them feel thankful when they can capitalize on another driver’s misfortune.

The bottom line is Bell sits just five points behind Kyle Larson with three races remaining in the season. 

Christopher Bell’s day at Phoenix helped close the gap between him and Kyle Larson in The Chase. 

Granted, he doesn’t love superspeedway racing enough to really look forward to Talladega next week. But Martinsville and Homestead — the final two races of the year — are places where he knows he can run well.

“I’m absolutely in it,” Bell told me and other reporters after the Phoenix race. “We’ve just got three more races to decide a champion. I think there’s a lot of us who are in it.”

That’s true. 

Six drivers are within 56 points of Larson. But Bell is the closest at just five points behind. He’s trailed by Chase Briscoe (24 points behind Larson), Denny Hamlin (minus-31), Ryan Blaney (-40), Joey Logano (-44) and Tyler Reddick (-56).

After winning at Phoenix, Tyler Reddick is firmly in The Chase conversation.

While Bell led a race-high 85 laps at Phoenix, he didn’t feel he was the best car or the best driver late in the event.

“Early on, I felt like we were going to be able to contend for the win, and then Stage 2 we lost a little bit. And then Stage 3, same thing. There were quite a few guys that were better than me,” Bell said. “It came down to strategy and restarts at the end. And we had good strategy, put tires on it, and was able to get a good finish.

“It wasn’t a super pretty day, but with other people having mistakes, it ended up being a good day for us.”

Bell knows that his success at Phoenix was partially due to other drivers’ mistakes.

It was a good day because Larson struggled throughout and ended up blowing a tire, resulting in just a three-point, 34th-place day. 

Bell earned 49 points on the day, cutting the gap from 51 points to five points.

Adam Stevens, the crew chief for Bell and winner of two Cup titles with Kyle Busch, indicated being five points behind certainly puts them in position to make a run at Bell’s first Cup title. 

Talladega brings its normal uncertainty as well as the change in the spoiler from 4 inches to 3.5 inches. The opening stage, being more than half the race, is also still something relatively new.

“A lot of unknowns still,” Stevens said. “Martinsville, we’re going to have to hit it right. Thankfully, we won there … if we can get [Christopher] close, he’ll be good. And same thing with Homestead.”

Bell knows he’s good but also believes he possibly has thrown away opportunities. 

He was curt in his answers after Charlotte, where he made a late run on Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe, only to come up a few feet short.

Bell made a move on Briscoe (background) at Charlotte but fell short. 

The two had a little bit of contact, but Bell said he had no issue with Briscoe. It was more with himself as he had attempted to rally for the win.

“I felt like we had the race under control through the early parts of Stage 3 and then lost the lead and Chase started driving away,” Bell said Saturday at Phoenix during a news conference. “I had got to be pretty content with second. I was like, ‘OK, it’s going to be what it’s going to be’ and then all of a sudden, the last couple of laps just kind of teased me a little bit.

“I was disappointed in myself coming to the line. I thought that I probably could have done a little bit more to get the win, so the frustration was really [with] myself.”

He put that frustration behind him with a solid run at Phoenix. And now he needs to survive the chaos of Talladega.

“The difference maker is who gets those wins and then Talladega,” Bell said. “Whatever happens at Talladega, the likelihood of a crash at Talladega is a lot higher at that track than other tracks.

“It can hinder your points that you [earn]. Between Talladega and race wins, that’s going to be the deciding factor.”

That might not be in Bell’s favor. 

He has two teammates — Briscoe and Hamlin — still fighting for the title, as well as Toyota driver Reddick. They likely will all be fighting for points. 

Larson doesn’t have any teammates within striking distance for the title and potentially will get more help from the Hendrick and the overall Chevrolet stable.

“That’s a real thing. That’s not a made-up story,” Stevens said. “That’s something that we’re going to have to battle against. It’s a one-horse race over there [at Chevrolet], and they have those resources to put toward it.

“So if it comes down to group decision-making, we’re at a disadvantage for sure.”

The Atlanta Falcons signed veteran quarterback Andy Dalton and released backup Cooper Rush on Monday.

Dalton is expected to join Tua Tagovailoa as the top backups to starter Michael Penix Jr. The signing was announced one day after the Falcons’ 31-23 loss to the Chicago Bears.

The Philadelphia Eagles released Dalton on Oct. 9 after he threw an interception on his only attempt as Jalen Hurts’ backup.

Dalton, 38, was acquired by the Eagles from the Carolina Panthers, where he made seven starts in three seasons, on March 18.

Dalton was a second-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2011 draft. He made three Pro Bowls during nine seasons with the Bengals and also played for the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago and the New Orleans Saints.

Dalton is 84-83-2 as a starter. He has completed 62.6% of his passes for 39,793 yards, 254 touchdowns with 152 interceptions in 16 seasons.

Rush, 32, was 0-2 as Atlanta’s starter. He was pressed into the starting role with Penix continuing his recovery from his 2025 knee surgery and with Tagovailoa ruled out with an oblique injury. In the losses to Carolina and the Pittsburgh Steelers to open the season, Rush completed 22 of 39 passes for 229 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions.

Penix has started the past four games for the Falcons (2-4), who play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

BYU takes the top spot after Bear Bachmeier and the Cougars beat Notre Dame 28-24 in Provo, ending the Fighting Irish’s 16-game winning streak. Georgia drops from the top spot after a 27-24 home loss to Auburn on a last-second field goal.

Ohio State holds at No. 2 after beating Indiana 19-15, though it lost quarterback Julian Sayin to an arm injury. Miami stays at No. 3 after a double-overtime win over Florida State. Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas Tech all join the top 10,  while Alabama, Texas and Utah fall out.

That wasn’t on my bingo card. But if their defense plays well, Trinidad Chambliss is a guy you’ve got to deal with. That team could win the national championship if they play defense.”

If nothing changes from Saturday except for those four inches where Nick Marsh stepped out of bounds in the end zone and he scores and they win that game, then guess what we’re talking about? ‘The only consistent in college football is Curt Cignetti.’ That’s how close it is. Those are the margins right now, and that’s why I’m telling you, parity is here.”

They’re very good on offense. They are not on defense.

“I know Miami is banged up a little bit, but come on. Some of the tackling. They couldn’t stop Duce Robinson in the first overtime on that 75-yard touchdown. They get that egregious holding call to go their way on the first Hail Mary in the second overtime. So they survive, but I couldn’t, in good conscience, put them ahead of Ohio State, who beat Indiana.”

BYU is my No. 1 team in the country.

“The Cougars deserve the respect, and quite frankly, I think they’ve earned it at this point. Ohio State has a loss. I know Miami doesn’t have a loss, but what has Miami done? Florida State is not a very good football team, and we’ve seen that proven out. Do you want to play BYU in Provo? I don’t. I don’t think anybody does at this point. Not in that scene.”

Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s eventful start to the 2026 season added another chapter.

Gardner-Johnson has been suspended one game after his ejection Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Gardner-Johnson was ejected before halftime of the Bills’ Week 6 game against the Las Vegas Raiders for unsportsmanlike conduct. He appeared to be in a verbal dispute with several Raiders’ players before the flag, and the replay showed Gardner-Johnson spitting in the area of Raiders tight end Brock Bowers.

The act violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”

Gardner-Johnson’s suspension begins Monday, Oct. 26, following the Bills’ Week 7 bye, meaning he will miss Buffalo’s Nov. 1 game against the Baltimore Ravens. He will be eligible to return to the active roster on Nov. 2. Gardner-Johnson can appeal the suspension.

Sunday’s ejection is the latest in a series of incidents for the veteran safety, who signed a one-year deal with Buffalo this year worth up to $6 million.

In Week 2, the NFL fined Gardner-Johnson $11,194 for a hip drop tackle on Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs on the first snap of the third quarter of Buffalo’s 41-31 win. 

Gardner-Johnson was hit with another $11,194 fine following last Monday’s 37-34 overtime win over the Rams, this time for striking/kicking/kneeing on a play late in regulation.

Gardner-Johnson stirred things up again after Buffalo’s 29-26 loss to the Patriots in Week 4. Efton Chism III made a diving, one-handed touchdown catch to win the game, and Gardner-Johnson brushed it off afterward, calling Chism a “practice squad player” who “made a hell of a catch.”

Sunday’s ejection isn’t the first of Gardner-Johnson’s career, either.

In December 2024, while with the Eagles, he was disqualified against the Commanders after drawing his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of the game, then flashed two middle fingers at the crowd on his way to the tunnel.

The Bills entered Sunday 4-1, while the Raiders came in at 3-2.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been punished for walking out on Portugal.

The Portuguese Football Federation announced Monday that the 41-year-old captain has been suspended for 30 days and fined €255 (about $286) after he left the national team’s camp in Denmark during the most recent international window. 

The suspension is backdated to Sept. 30, the day Ronaldo left camp, meaning he will be available for selection again when Portugal next plays on Nov. 14.

The Disciplinary Council released a statement detailing their official verdict on Ronaldo. 

The statement read: “Accordingly, and on the grounds set out above, the Disciplinary Council – Non-Professional Section – of the Portuguese Football Federation hereby decides, in these proceedings, to uphold the charges in their entirety and, consequently, find the accused, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, guilty of committing, on one occasion and intentionally, the disciplinary offense provided for and punishable under Article 160(1) of the RDFPF. As a result, he is handed a 30-day suspension and an additional fine of 2.5 units, amounting to €255 (two hundred and fifty-five euros).”

The dispute began when Ronaldo was an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League win at Norway on Sept. 27. Ronaldo said head coach Jorge Jesus had told him beforehand he would get about a half-hour on the field. Jesus had him warm up, but he never entered the match.

Tensions boiled over days later when Jesus said Ronaldo wouldn’t start against Denmark, and Ronaldo left camp the day before the match in Copenhagen. 

Portugal won that game and its rematch with Norway without him, leaving the team atop its Nations League group with a perfect record through four matches.

In a lengthy statement posted to Instagram on Oct. 6, Ronaldo accused Jesus of breaking promises but took responsibility for leaving. “I owe my national team teammates an apology for leaving the training camp,” he said. He also called on the federation to sanction him, arguing that as captain, his position “constitutes an aggravating factor.”

The pair had worked together at Al-Nassr, winning the Saudi Pro League together in 2025-26, before Jesus took over the national team.

Ronaldo did not announce an end to his international career. He is the all-time leading scorer in men’s international soccer with 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, and he captained the team to the Euro 2016 title and two Nations League crowns.

Florida State coach Mike Norvell expressed frustration Monday with the Atlantic Coast Conference officiating crew that oversaw his team’s 43-35 loss at the Miami Hurricanes in double overtime, calling a late holding penalty “an absolute joke.”

Norvell also questioned the interception that ended the game.

Norvell said he spoke with ACC Supervisor of Football Officials Gary Patterson but has not heard “his final review” of the game.

On the first of two “Hail Mary” attempts in the waning seconds, Florida State’s Ashton Daniels completed a pass to Micahi Danzy in the end zone, but the completion was waved off because left tackle Xavier Chaplin was flagged for holding.

“The holding call, it was an absolute joke,” Norvell said. “I have not heard (Patterson’s) final review from it. I’ve got a lot of respect for the job everybody has. Same thing happened a few plays earlier that was not called. But in that moment, that play, it’s just a shame. It really is.

“We had to go convert the 2-point play. But for those kids to not be able to finish the game on the field, in that moment, it’s really disappointing. There are a lot of judgment calls in all things but that was bad. I haven’t gotten the final response from them, but if it’s anything less than what I said, it tells me everything I need to know.”

Norvell also criticized what he perceived as a lack of a discussion on the “simultaneous possession” on the second desperation throw to the end zone, the one that Florida State’s Duce Robinson got both hands on but was ruled an interception by Miami defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald.

“The Hail Mary thing at the end, the only disappointing thing (is) I know it went to review,” Norvell said. “From what I’ve been told, simultaneous possession never even came up in the conversation of review. … As I said immediately after the game, if you got two guys going up for a catch, and they both come to the ground, simultaneous possession, that has to be a part of the discussion.”

Norvell went on to say he was proud of Florida State’s resolve in those moments, although Miami held on for the win. He also praised the Hurricanes, who were ranked No. 3 and moved up to No. 1 on Sunday, and said “that was a great college football game.”

Norvell also was candid about Florida State’s 3-4 record. Florida State has lost to a pair of top-10 teams on the road, Miami and the Alabama Crimson Tide, and to the SMU Mustangs in a home game on Labor Day.

Florida State has a bye this week before hosting the Clemson Tigers on Oct. 31. Norvell is 41-38 in his seventh season at Florida State.

“We’re not in the business of being close,” Norvell said. “We’re not in the moral victories of it … I told them (Sunday), told the staff, ‘I’m a proud coach for how a team played.’”
