WWDC 2026: Here’s When Apple Will Reveal iOS 27

We now know when we’ll get our first look at iOS 27, as Apple says it will hold its annual developer’s conference, WWDC 2026 from June 8 to June 12, 2026, with an online keynote on the first day. Alongside iOS 27, Apple is expected to reveal iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27.

Current rumors suggest the developer’s conference will focus on Apple Intelligence, as the company should share more about its plans for the all-new Siri and its partnership with Google Gemini. There’s also a chance that there will be hardware announcements, as the company is expected to announce a Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra chip in the coming months.

“WWDC is one of the most exciting times for us at Apple because it’s a chance for our incredible global developer community to come together for an electrifying week that celebrates technology, innovation, and collaboration,” said Susan Prescott, Apple’s VP of Worldwide Developer Relations. “We can’t wait to see many of you online and in person for what is sure to be one of our best WWDC events yet.”

As has been the case in recent years, the Worldwide Developers Conference is completely online, meaning that besides a select group potentially watching the pre-recorded conference at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple’s headquarters in California, everyone else will attend virtually, including the hundreds of sessions that developers will be able to watch regarding the new updates.

Recently, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that iOS 27 will be all about fixing bugs, as the company lays the groundwork for the upcoming iPhone Fold and other products. Besides that, we should expect refinements to Liquid Glass in all the operating systems, in addition to the new Apple Intelligence features.

The WWDC 2026 keynote will also mark an important moment for the Mac, as macOS 27 will only be compatible with Apple Silicon, meaning that Macs with Intel processors are being left behind. For the other operating systems, it’s unclear what the company has in store, but tvOS 27 might get a spotlight depending on the company’s schedule for new products in the home department, in addition to the possible support for Apple Intelligence on Apple TV and other devices.

Apple hints at two unreleased products

A MacBook Pro running macOS Tahoe José Adorno/BGR

This year’s WWDC 2026 could also give us some hints about at least two upcoming Apple products: the long-rumored iPhone Fold and the touchscreen MacBook Pro. After all, Apple will need to offer new APIs so developers can adjust or even create new apps for a foldable display, which is rumored to be 7.8 inches unfolded. Besides that, even though Liquid Glass made macOS more similar to iOS and iPadOS, it’s still made for mouse controls. If rumors turn out to be accurate, Apple might make other tweaks to allow for touch interactions, such as increasing the size of some menus, icons, and buttons.

Both of these products are expected to be announced at the end of the year. The iPhone Fold should launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models, which are expected in September, while some reports suggest that there’s still a possibility that the all-new MacBook Pro with an OLED display, M6 chips, and touchscreen capabilities might be delayed to the beginning of 2027. Whatever the case, it won’t be long before we learn more about Apple’s future software updates and even some new products, as WWDC 2026 kicks off in less than three months.

Google Messages Finally Added Real-Time Location Sharing

close-up of smartphon showing google messages app store listing Koshiro K/Shutterstock

Being able to easily share your location with others is one reason that Android’s Find Hub — which received a massive update with Android 16 — and the iPhone’s Find My network have become so popular. It makes keeping up with family and close friends extremely simple, while also giving you the ability to remove the tracking option at any time. But what if you’re meeting up with a friend that you don’t want to give access to your location all the time? Well, if you have an Android phone with Google Messages, then that is now more easily possible thanks to Google’s latest addition of real-time sharing directly in the Messages app.

Now, we’ve known this feature was coming for at least a month or so, as a previous APK teardown helped reveal that real-time location sharing had been spotted in a beta for Google Messages; however, it appears that the feature has now officially begun rolling out, with us confirming its availability on a Galaxy S25 Ultra earlier this morning. So how exactly does this new feature work? Well, it’s thankfully quite simple. Instead of having to go into Google Maps or register someone through the Find Hub on Android, you can now share your location directly in the Messages app by tapping on a few quick options.

How to share real-time location in Google Messages

Breakdown of how to use Real-time location sharing directly in Google Messages. Josh Hawkins / BGR

To start easily sharing your location, open the conversation that you want to share your location with. Next, tap the plus icon in the chat — it is located next to the text entry area — and then select Real-time location from the list. If you haven’t given Messages access to your location, then you’ll be prompted to do so. Once confirmed, you’ll get a quick view of the area around you, as well as an option for how long you want to share and a Send button.

To customize the duration of time you share your location, simply tap on the dropdown and then select one of the options that pop up. You can share for one hour, just that day, or even until you turn the feature off. If you only need to share for 15 to 30 minutes, then you can select the Custom duration setting and enter the time you want to share. It is worth noting that the fake phone number we put in for our screenshots does not list the Until I turn it off option; however, we did confirm its existence with a real phone number that has RCS chats enabled (RCS being the feature that helps Google Messages catch more scams).

After you confirm the location-sharing options, your location will be visible directly in Google Messages, allowing you to easily see where your friends and family are and letting them track you. And, once the timer for the duration you set runs out, it should revert to not sharing anymore, without requiring you to go in and remove the person with any additional steps.

Nintendo Switch 2 Update Just Gave Your Game Collection A

Nintendo Switch 2 surrounded by games Matthieu Tuffet/Shutterstock

If you’ve been playing some of the latest Nintendo Switch 2 games, you might be disappointed when going back to some of the original Switch games that haven’t received a free Switch 2 upgrade. The original Nintendo Switch had less power to work with, and a lower resolution, leaving games looking less impressive when you go back to playing them after enjoying the boost from your Nintendo Switch 2.

Thankfully, Nintendo’s 22.0.0 update for the Switch 2 adds a new feature that will help bring original Switch titles closer to the visual fidelity you would expect to see on a Switch 2. The new update adds a brand new Handheld Mode Boost setting which unlocks performance you would usually only get from using the console when docked to your TV. Of course, with better performance and resolution, there’s a trade-off. This comes in the form of higher power consumption, with the new mode using more power to improve the quality of the image.

How Handheld Mode Boost improves performance

While the original Nintendo Switch had a 720p display in handheld mode, the Switch 2 upgraded the handheld resolution to 1080p, giving you a sharper picture. The new mode can give select original Switch titles a boost up to 1080p in handheld mode when activated. It also lets games take advantage of the console’s improved hardware, offering better all-around performance than you would get on the original Switch — and even the Switch 2, prior to the update.

The new mode isn’t enabled by default, so you will need to turn it on if you want to take advantage of the additional power. To do so, you need to head over to System Settings on your Switch 2, navigate to System, and then find Nintendo Switch Software Handling. You should see an option to turn Handheld Mode Boost on or off. As well as the new mode, the 22.0.0 update also included stability improvements, as well as new features, such as more detailed storage information and the ability to save notes about friends.

Downsides to Handheld Mode Boost

Two detached Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controllers Nintendo

While Handheld Mode Boost might give you some performance improvements and a nice little bump in resolution, there are some downsides to using it. The first, as already mentioned, is the hit the Nintendo Switch 2’s battery life will take. Beyond that, because the new mode forces the console into TV mode, there are other issues to bear in mind, too. Firstly, you might find that games you play with Handheld Mode Boost enabled no longer support touchscreen input, as this wouldn’t usually be enabled in handheld mode.

You’ll also find that if you’re using Joy-Con 2 controllers, they will be treated as a single Nintendo Switch 2 Pro controller, which can cause some issues if you’re trying to use in-game features that require Joy-Con 2 functionality. If you prefer, you can just use a third-party Switch 2 controller, or the official Switch 2 Pro controller; you don’t have to use Joy-Cons if you don’t want to.

Amazon’s Ad-Free Prime Video Is Almost Doubling How Much It

prime video logo showing on smart TV screen with bowl of popcorn in front of it eafaru/Shutterstock

In 2023, Amazon announced some big changes to how its Prime Video service works. Instead of being ad-free content with your Prime membership, the company would show ads alongside its content while also offering an ad-free add-on for those who didn’t want to see them. While the asking price wasn’t terrible — only $2.99 a month on top of your regular Prime membership — those few bucks can certainly add up over time. And now, it seems it isn’t content to stick with that plan, as Amazon has announced that on April 10, the ad-free subscription add-on will rise from $2.99 to $4.99.

That’s more than double the current price of the feature, though a discounted annual price will also be available. Amazon says that “delivering ad-free streaming with premium features requires significant investment,” which is a big part of why it’s upping the price of its ad-free component. On top of the price hike, though, Amazon will also change the name to Prime Video Ultra.

It will also add several new features to the mix as well, including an increase in how many offline downloads you can have at one time and how many devices can stream at the same time. But the real kicker is, those who don’t upgrade to the Prime Video Ultra add-on will now miss out on Dolby Atmos support and 4K streaming.

What’s changing

smart tv remote in foreground, blurry prime video logo in background Bangla press/Shutterstock

That’s right, one of the biggest changes coming to Prime Video with this new plan is the fact that regular Prime members will no longer get 4K video. Instead, you’ll need to subscribe to the $4.99 Prime Video Ultra service in order to watch movies and TV shows at a higher quality. It looks like Amazon doesn’t have any immediate plans to raise the price of Prime from $14.99 a month — though removing features is never a good feeling.

Those who do shell out the extra $4.99 a month will get access to more offline downloads, a max of 100 compared to the previous 25 (regular Prime members will only get 50). Additionally, those subscribers will also be able to stream on up to five different devices at once, which is an improvement from the previous limit of three (Prime members without Ultra will only get four concurrent streams).

Unfortunately, these price increases make perfect sense, as Amazon has slowly been working to not only offer more original content from heavy-hitting series like “Lord of the Rings” and even “James Bond,” but the company has also been investing in AI-powered features for its Prime Video service, like AI recaps for TV shows. Amazon isn’t the first streaming service to use AI, either, as Netflix used AI in a TV show back in 2025.

Apple Announced AirPods Max 2 With 9 New Features (And

Apple has announced an update to its over-ear headphones with the AirPods Max 2, that will be available to order late March 2026. This product reveal comes on the heels of several recent Apple announcements, ranging from the iPhone 17e with 6 new features to the all-new, value-packed MacBook Neo. Though this AirPods Max update still has some of the same issues as the original model, like the smart case that only protects the earcups, it does add Apple’s H2 chip, which is responsible for several improvements.

Apple’s AirPods Max 2 looks the same as the USB-C version released in September 2024, as it also comes in midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue colors. On the inside, however, a big change is the H2 chip, which is responsible for improved audio quality and software features that were previously limited to high-end earbuds like Apple’s AirPods Pro lineup.

“With the incredible performance of H2, AirPods Max are upgraded with up to 1.5x more effective ANC for the ultimate all-day listening experience,” said Eric Treski, Apple’s director of Audio Product Marketing in a press release. “The sound quality is remarkably clean, rich, and acoustically detailed, and when combined with capabilities like Personalized Spatial Audio, AirPods Max 2 deliver a profoundly immersive experience.”

New features of the AirPods Max 2

When Apple released the USB-C version of the AirPods Max, a common complaint was that the H1 chip remained, making these headphones virtually the same as the original from 2020. Now, AirPods Max 2 feature the H2 processor, which is shared with the AirPods Pro 2 and 3, and AirPods 4. This new hardware brings up to 1.5x more effective Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) than the previous generation. Apple says the upgraded chip also makes Transparency mode sound more natural.

The addition of Adaptive Audio is aimed at optimizing the blend of ANC and Transparency depending on the environment around you. With Conversation Awareness, AirPods Max 2 can identify when someone is talking nearby and lower the volume accordingly. There’s also Live Translation to let users experience real-time translation, while Loud Sound Reduction makes these AirPods ideal for wearing while attending a concert. Beyond that, Apple says a new high dynamic range amplifier delivers a cleaner audio experience and that reduced wireless audio latency in the Max 2 will improve gaming.

Carryover issues with the Apple AirPods Max 2

While there are several new features with the AirPods Max 2, it doesn’t mean the headphones are flawless. By leaving the design unchanged, users still have to deal with the same case, which doesn’t protect the headband, only the earcups. As well, the Max 2 headphones don’t feature a power button, meaning you need to use the Smart Case to activate standby mode in order to conserve the battery.

Given the carryover design, it’s possible customers will continue to suffer from condensation buildup inside the earcups. Something else that hasn’t changed is the weight of the AirPods Max 2, which is within one gram of the original model and can lead to user fatigue during long periods of use.

Apple has also left out two other key features for the AirPods Max 2: An IP rating for water resistance and U1-enabled Find My capabilities. The lack of an IP rating means the new AirPods Max shouldn’t be used during a sweaty workout or in the rain. And though the Max 2 does support Find My, the lack of an ultra-wideband chip leaves you with Bluetooth capability only. This means no access to Apple’s Precision Finding technology, which is less than ideal should you misplace your $549 headphones.

The Special Edition Powerbeats Pro 2 Have 4 Design Changes

Powerbeats Pro 2 Nike Special Edition on a grass field. The earbuds are outside the charging case. José Adorno/BGR

Beats’ iconic Powerbeats Pro 2 is finally getting its first special edition. The brand is known for making partnerships with other brands, influencers, and artists by customizing its popular earbuds and headphones, but this time, the company is going a step further, letting Nike take over Beats’ powerful earbuds. The result is a few design changes that you might never see the audio company letting anyone do that again. From the customized charging case to dual color earbuds, there’s even Nike’s special slogan hidden inside the product.

“This isn’t just a new colorway; it’s a collision of two brands that define performance, culture, and sports–the attributes of today’s athlete,” said Chris Thorne, CMO of Beats. “By placing the Swoosh on our hardware for the first time, we’re honoring the shared DNA of Beats and Nike. It’s a tribute to the grit, style, and sound that push people to their limits.”

Apple and Nike are no strangers. Both companies have been working together for years, and the sportswear firm has been the only one, besides Hermes, to have a proper special Apple Watch, in addition to bands, and other collaborations. Besides that, we’ve seen Tim Cook wearing special Nike editions, and Beats is always partnering with the company. Still, this brings a new level of commitment between the brands, which features LeBron James and Tom Kim in this new campaign.

This might be Powerbeats Pro 2’s boldest design yet

Powerbeats Pro 2 Nike Edition has a Nike logo on the earbuds and the company's slogan on the charging case José Adorno/BGR

First available in four colors, this limited edition comes in a new Volt palette. The first design change customers will notice is in the charging case, which has kind of a “Splatoon” vibe. The case has Volt splatter across it, and when customers open it, they will be greeted with Nike’s “Just Do It” slogan. Nike’s slogan is in an Apple product, yes. The third change is that on the right earbud, customers will see Nike’s logo instead of Beats’ traditional “b” logo (the Beats logo will still be on the left earbud). The earbuds will also have a dual-color design, with most of the earbud being volt and the bud itself in black.

To celebrate the launch, Beats ambassador LeBron James is featured in an advertisement playing a round of golf. Despite his terrible game, he’s so focused on the music he’s listening to that he doesn’t care about the criticisms by professional golfer Tom Kim and actors Lionel Boyce and Travis “Taco” Bennett.

Powerbeats Pro 2 is still one of the best earbuds around

Powerbeats Pro 2 Nike Edition charging case José Adorno/BGR

Powerbeats Pro 2 improves everything about the first generation of this product. From proper wireless charging to up to 45 hours of listening time. Beats also made the earhooks smaller and with a new material to make them more comfortable and stable (even though prolonged use still hurts the back of my ears a bit). Customers get Beats’ signature sound with powerful bass and Apple’s H2 chip, which enables several popular AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 features, like Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency Mode, head gestures, and more. What I like the most about Powerbeats Pro 2 is the physical buttons for volume, which are especially useful when you’re on a long run and already sweating a lot.

Besides that, heart rate measurement has become my favorite feature on Apple’s earbuds, and with a firmware update released last year, Powerbeats Pro 2 got support for it on the Fitness app, as it was previously only available within third-party apps. This update also brought Calorimeter, Pedometer, and Live Activities for the heart rate sensor on the Lock Screen.

Powerbeats Pro 2 Nike Special Edition launches this Friday, March 20, for $249.99 in the U.S., the UK, China, Japan, Germany, Canada, Australia, Singapore, France, Spain, India, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Hong Kong. It will be available in select Apple Store locations in the U.S., the UK, China, and Singapore.

First Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Reveals Tom Holland’s Return

The first “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” trailer leaked in mid-December 2025, giving fans a blurry first look at footage from the film. However, Sony didn’t immediately release an official trailer in theaters or on YouTube. At the time, Marvel was also conducting a massive teaser trailer campaign for “Avengers: Doomsday.” In an unexpected move, both Sony and Marvel refrained from releasing MCU trailers during the Super Bowl.

Fast-forward to mid-March, and Sony has finally released the first “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” trailer online, with about four months to go until the film’s premiere. Starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, and Sadie Sink, “Brand New Day” will hit theaters on July 31. The first trailer gives us our first official look at some of these beloved MCU characters in this new “Spider-Man” adventure.

Sony spent a full day teasing the trailer online before its release on Wednesday, with Tom Holland kickstarting a campaign on social media to announce a promotional campaign unlike those used for earlier “Spider-Man” films. Sony partnered with Spider-Man fans to release short clips from the trailer, for a total of 23 “Brand New Day” videos that were posted on Instagram by individual Spider-Man fans. Interestingly, each short trailer teaser came with a link to the next piece of the puzzle. The better experience is watching the full trailer in one go, either on YouTube (as seen above) or in theaters, where it should play starting this week before the current attractions.

What happens in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer?

The trailer gives us a first look at Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), in the days after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Peter Parker narrates the clip, briefly reminding us of his predicament. He is still the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but he’s living a lonely life, with everyone dear in his life either dead or having no memory of their relationship with Peter Parker. The trailer shows us a Peter who still suffers, following the lives of MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) closely, without actually getting involved. However, the trailer does show that Peter will interact with his former girlfriend and best friend in the movie. It’s too early to tell whether MJ and Ned will remember who Peter Parker is by the end of the film.

All the while, Peter is still doing his job, which is protecting the world around him from bad guys (including Scorpion, played by Michael Mando, and The Hand ninja group), with the trailer teasing stunning action scenes in Destin Daniel Cretton’s first “Spider-Man” movie. But Peter is also suffering physically as his body is going through some sort of transformation that requires some medical attention. Dr. Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) is the person Peter goes to for help to study the new mutations, much like he went to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in “No Way Home” for assistance.

The trailer also gives us a quick look at the MCU’s Punisher (Jon Bernthal), teasing the somewhat hilarious relationship between the two vigilantes. But we don’t get to see Sadie Sink, who seemed to appear in the leaked trailer late last year. On the other hand, a mysterious character narrates the “life cycles” description of spiders throughout the trailer’s runtime.

What Invincible Season 4 Villain Universa Looks Like In Real

*This post contains spoilers for “Invincible” Season 4, Episode 1 and potentially future seasons*

Now with three bloody, bone and gristle sprinkled seasons under its belt, “Invincible” has gained a phenomenal cast list to bring Robert Kirkman’s world of flawed and incredibly fragile heroes, constantly fighting an endless array of villains. Now in season 4, the big threat is the long-anticipated arrival of Grand Regent Thragg, leader of the Viltrumite people and the mustached menace that’s going to cause even more problems for both Mark (Steve Yuen) and Nolan (J.K. Simmons). He’s voiced by “Foundation” star, Luke Pace, and is a perfect fit for the character. Before we get to see the full force of Viltrum’s leader, though, there are other foes for Mark to go up against, beginning with ferocious femme fatale, Universa.

Making her original appearance in “Invincible” #69 in the comics, Universa was a Wonder Woman-like warrior that Mark was forced to face. In the first episode of “Invincible” season 4, she arrives with the goal of draining the planet’s energy resources for her own gain. Luckily, Invincible Inc. gets the call to save the day when she attacks a power plant. For a role this intimidating, it’s smart to call someone who has handled various levels of danger. Someone who can confront everything from hordes of zombies to alien invaders. Who better for the job than “The Walking Dead” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” star Danai Gurira?

Danai Gurira’s Universa will play a part in Invincible’s future

Danai Gurira smiling DFree/Shutterstock

After playing Michonne in “The Walking Dead,” it’s great to see another beloved cast member from Kirkman’s live-action show lend her voice here. Just like Michonne, Universa starts out as something of a lone warrior, out for her own and doing anything she can to save her homeworld. Like Michonne, trust is a fragile thing and one that Mark eventually earns in the comics, so it’ll be interesting to see if this iteration of the show will end up on the same path.

So far, there have been occasional deviations in “Invincible” that stray from the comic’s storyline, so who knows? Universa, while defeated by the combined efforts of Invincible and Atom Eve (Gillian Jacobs), might still be upset about losing her battle and being prevented from completing her mission, possibly leading to another confrontation in the future. Honestly, though, maybe it’s better if she doesn’t, considering Mark has enough on his plate with warring nations trying to take over the planet and a girlfriend who isn’t feeling too great at the moment. All of this is part of what makes “Invincible” one of the best R-rated superhero shows out there. If you want to keep up with it, be sure to tune back in on Prime Video when the fourth episode drops next week.

6 Things You Need To Know About XGIMI’s New MemoMind

XGIMI's MemoMind AR glasses being displayed at Mobile World Congress 2026 José Adorno/BGR

Early this year, popular projector brand XGIMI announced it would enter the augmented reality (AR) glasses market with its new MemoMind brand. While BGR already had the chance to go hands-on with the product at its official reveal at CES, the publication was also invited to Mobile World Congress 2026, in Barcelona, to take another look at these glasses, which are now set to be released later next month. Unlike other AR glasses, XGIMI decided to join this market because it already produces everything from its projectors, including the optical part.

This is why, internally, it became a challenge to see if its engineers could replicate the quality of its projector lenses for AR glasses, and they were satisfied with the results. That said, XGIMI will be releasing not just one pair of AR glasses, but three models that will range from no AR display, to a single one or two over the year. With that, the company will offer a range of different options to customers, but with a main feature in common: none of them will be made to take photos or record videos. Instead, they can help you with everyday queries, among other features, but they won’t raise privacy concerns from people around whenever customers can actually get them.

XGIMI’s MemoMind AR Glasses are full of clever features

A closer shot at parts of the MemoMind AR glasses José Adorno/BGR

The first thing I realized after going hands-on with the MemoMind was that this device actually looks like regular glasses, which means they don’t feel intimidating in case you’re walking around with them; in addition, in case you choose a model that features displays, they still look very discreet. The flagship model, XGIMI’s MemoMind One, will be all about looking good, as customers will be able to choose between eight frame styles and five interchangeable temple designs. As proper glasses, XGIMI will also offer prescription lenses from day one, but the sunglasses add-on will be available at a later date.

A person wearing AR glassesJosé Adorno/BGR

What I think is most interesting about these AR glasses is that they are made for quick interactions. So, for most of the time, you’ll just be wearing regular glasses, and whenever you need a smart capability, like live translating, checking your schedule, or even presenting with a live teleprompter, you’ll be able to.

Besides those features, I also think XGIMI’s know-how was able to solve one of the biggest issues with AR glasses, which is adjusting the distance between what you’re reading on the display, and doing that by offering a two-wide-screen option. In my experience, I wouldn’t be crossing my eyes to read what was in front of me. That said, XGIMI continues to build the hype over these glasses, and you’ll soon be able to put them to the test.

Pennsylvania’s New License Plates Are Causing Toll Cameras To Malfunction

Close up of a toll collection system setup above a highway with cameras visible. Here Now/Shutterstock

Design changes to the Pennsylvania license plate are causing people to receive wrongfully attributed bills or traffic fees. It all has to do with the automated toll and camera systems and the license plate recognition software powering them. To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, the state license plate was refreshed to feature the Liberty Bell,  a new slogan (“Let freedom ring”), and small changes for the overall style, which included altering the font for the numbers and lettering.

As a result of those changes, cameras and license recognition systems are reportedly reading the new 0 as the number 8, changing the final plate number and resulting in the wrong person or driver getting a bill. PennDOT has released a statement on the matter, explaining, “The addition of the slash through the zero was intended to help differentiate between the 0 and the letter O, which both the license plate readers (LPR) and human eye have had difficulty differentiating on past registration plates.”

Automated cameras and recognition systems are the source of the problem here. There have long been concerns over their accuracy, and it certainly seems like there should be a system of checks and balances put in place before those bills or fines go out to potential drivers. A prescient idea considering one of the biggest U.S. cities is installing automated speed cameras to dole out hefty fines.

What is Pennsylvania doing to fix the inaccurate readings?

While the easiest solution would be to change the font on the plates, Pennsylvania is instead opting to recalibrate its systems and train the software to better detect the new character. PennDOT says the new plate “meets PennDOT production and legibility requirements and was developed in consultation with PA State Police (PSP) and the PA Turnpike (PTC).” In addition, the slash technique through the zero was a “best practice recommendation” from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA).

The unfortunate issue is that the retraining process may not be as quick as everyone hopes. It takes time for the systems to build recognition data, which potentially means more people getting flagged and being sent bills that shouldn’t be their responsibility. Pennsylvania officials say residents should double-check their toll-by-plate statements and, if they see anything that’s inaccurate, contact the Turnpike Commission. Recognition and camera inaccuracies can be fairly common anywhere, actually. Cameras mounted too high or too far away, not properly maintained, or obscured by sunlight or lighting glare can give false readings. Moreover, there are a variety of factors that impact visual accuracy, such as lighting conditions, vehicle speeds, environmental elements or inclement weather, camera quality and, yes, license plate designs and their condition.

The technology as a whole has gotten better over time. Australian traffic cameras have the ability to tell when drivers are texting instead of paying attention. Researchers in the country may have also devised a system to detect drunk drivers and prevent accidents using camera footage and AI.
