After Messi scored Argentina’s first five goals of this tournament, the team’s supporting cast stepped up to contribute six of the team’s last nine goals. In the win over Egypt, Cristian Romero began the comeback while Messi equalized and Enzo Fernández hit the winner.

Moving forward, Argentina will need an improved defensive effort while also maintaining a balanced scoring effort around Messi.

That will be hard to come by, as Switzerland has been one of the toughest teams to break down defensively. Head coach Murat Yakin has established Switzerland as a growing European power and one of the world’s most improved teams. Against Colombia, Switzerland was perfect defensively as it was always disciplined and committed to its defensive shape.

At the heart of Switzerland’s defensive formation is captain and central midfielder Granit Xhaka, who has turned back the clock with performances that were reminiscent of his Arsenal days. Meanwhile, Manuel Akanji has been one of the best central defenders of this tournament.

The biggest concern for Switzerland is that on Friday, Yakin revealed that dynamic attacking midfielder Johan Manzambi would not be able to play against Argentina. Manzambi, 20, was one of the tournament’s most impressive breakout players and has reportedly inked a transfer to Newcastle United as a result. Manzambi injured himself in training just before the Colombia game.

His absence severely impacts Switzerland’s ability to counterattack against Argentina’s transition defense, which has been its biggest weakness at this World Cup.

Argentina is the favorite in this game, but La Albiceleste could be in trouble if it falls behind, as mounting a comeback against Switzerland will be far more difficult than against any of the teams it has faced so far.

The Inter Milan and former Manchester City veteran has arguably been the best central defender in this tournament. He is excellent with the ball, and defensively, he is good in one-on-one situations while being able to handle the physical side of the game. Stopping Argentina is one of the hardest assignments for a defender, but Akanji enters this game in great form.

While Konsa has played at center back when he’s gone up against Haaland in the Premier League, just having him on the pitch should inspire some confidence in a Three Lions side under immense pressure to get a result.

The Chicago White Sox selected UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky on Saturday with the first pick of the MLB amateur draft.

A 6-foot-2 right-handed hitter, Cholowsky was a Golden Spikes finalist at UCLA and had a 1.088 OPS with 21 homers and 60 RBIs in his junior season.

Cholowsky was a top prospect, who could have been selected high in the 2025 MLB amateur draft. Instead, he returned for a third season at UCLA, where he helped the Bruins become the first college baseball team to ever have an end-to-end season as the Associated Press No. 1 ranked team. The Bruins finished the regular season 48-6 overall (28-2 in the Big Ten), won the Big Ten tournament, and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. 

That success, however, didn’t translate to the postseason as the Bruins couldn’t advance out of the Los Angeles Regional, falling twice to Saint Mary’s. 

Still, Cholowsky’s college career is remembered for his accolades on the field, and the teammate he was off the diamond, captaining a UCLA team that largely stuck together in a college baseball era dominated by the transfer portal. 

Tampa Bay picks second and Minnesota is third. San Francisco is fourth and Pittsburgh fifth. Kansas City, Baltimore, the Athletics, Atlanta and Colorado round out the top 10.

The White Sox had the top selection for the first time since taking Harold Baines in 1977.

The White Sox got the No. 1 pick after they lost 102 games last season and won the draft lottery and have pegged Cholowsky as a future star that can help them win their first World Series title since 2005.

Argentina and Switzerland are set to take each other on in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup at Kansas City Stadium on Saturday, July 11.

Argentina had two hard-fought victories to reach this point. It was pushed to extra time by Cape Verde, a team that equalized twice, including once in extra time. But a late own goal off a Cristian Romero header in the 111th minute allowed Argentina to squeeze past Cape Verde.

Another tough task followed in the round of 16 against Egypt, which had a 2-0 lead with 11 minutes plus stoppage time to go. But Argentina produced a three-goal swing in the final stretch behind a magical performance from Messi, who had a goal and assist that helped spark the comeback, before a stoppage-time winner from Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround in normal time. Argentina won, 3-2, to advance to the final eight in dramatic fashion.

For Switzerland, it has been a less dramatic run. It got past Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver in a match where it never really had to get out of second gear, before a stalemate against Colombia that did not have much going on from open play. But a penalty shootout victory saw Switzerland reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 72 years, going back to 1954.

Argentina’s match against Egypt ended in controversial fashion and led to significant quotes from the Egypt camp about the officiating. Comments from head coach Hossam Hassan and Mostafa Zico stirred the pot in the context of the officiating of the match.

Who Are The Referees For Argentina-Switzerland? 

The head official for this match will have a heavy task because of those past controversies, but he does have some familiarity with one side, having already refereed Switzerland earlier in the tournament.

João Pinheiro from Portugal will be the head official for this match. A respected Portuguese referee, Pinheiro has handled high-level games domestically and also refereed last season’s UEFA Super Cup between PSG and Tottenham.

Despite this being his debut World Cup campaign, he has already had the opportunity to referee multiple knockout-stage matches at this tournament, including this quarterfinal. This will be his third game of the World Cup and his second match refereeing Switzerland, after he officiated Switzerland-Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 match between South Africa and Canada.

Norway might not be thrilled with VAR once its quarterfinal match against England is through.

Following the match, FIFA Media released a post on X debunking claims that the ball had hit the wire on the play where England eventually equalized. FIFA has utilized advanced ball-tracking technology throughout the tournament to justify why VAR decisions, including this one:

“Before England’s goal in minute 45+2 against Norway, the sensor in the Connected Ball showed no peak in the ‘heartbeat of the ball’ when in the air, and therefore no evidence that the ball touched the overhead wire and changed the movement of the ball.”

Then, in the second half, Norway had a goal chalked off because of a foul by Erling Haaland before a corner kick.

Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland took a goal kick that hit the cables for the camera that is above the field at Miami Stadium. According to Clattenburg, when the ball strikes an object in the field of play that is not a player, play should be halted, and those plays are reviewable by VAR.

“Some will ask, why does the VAR not interfere? Yes they can interfere if that contact of the ball on the camera cable is part of a reviewable incident. If [the contact] leads to a goal, it is a part of the VAR reviewable incidents,” FOX rules analyst Mark Clattenburg said of the goal kick that led to Jude Bellingham’s goal. “So, it should have been picked up by the VAR.”

The VAR referee for this game is Jérôme Brisard, who was also the video assistant for the Argentina vs. Egypt game that caused controversy when Egypt had a goal chalked off that would have doubled its lead over the reigning champions.

Nyland’s goal kick was controlled by England, and two passes later the ball found Bellingham. The Real Madrid star impressively finished for his fifth goal of the tournament to make it 1-1 right before halftime.

Norwegian players and coaches objected after the goal, noting that the ball had hit the cable above the field. French referee Clément Turpin allowed play to restart, though, without an intervention from the video assistant.

Then, in the 55th minute, Haaland pushed England midfielder Elliot Anderson before a corner kick was taken. Defender Torbjorn Heggem scored from the corner, but the goal was called off following a VAR check and the corner kick was retaken because Haaland’s push happened before the corner was taken.

Clattenburg agreed with the VAR decision to disallow the goal. 

“Where do we start with this, because there are so many situations to deal with. But just before the corner’s about to be taken, he clearly pushes Anderson in the chest and under the new IFAB regulations, if a foul happens just before the corner kick is taken … it should be punished.”

Norway took the lead through a stunning goal by winger Andreas Schjelderup in the 36th minute. Then, two minutes into first-half stoppage time, Bellingham scored.
