After a strong offseason and training camp, the Baltimore Ravens will be without rookie star wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane in the coming weeks. According to CBS Sports, Lane is expected to undergo surgery to repair a fractured wrist.

Lane could reportedly undergo surgery as early as Wednesday and is expected to miss nearly a month of action. While the Ravens have not yet assigned an official injury designation, placing him on injured reserve has yet to be ruled out.

Injuries to both Lane and Zay Flowers (hamstring) have quickly tested Baltimore’s revamped receiving depth. As the Ravens prepare for Sunday’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints, Rashod Bateman, Chris Moore, and Elijah Sarratt are next in line on the depth chart at wide receiver. 

Lane had lined up as a running mate with Flowers in Week 1, lining up at the Z position. With his 6-foot-4 frame, he was set to become a prime red zone target for quarterback Lamar Jackson.

The 21-year-old receiver arrived in Baltimore as a third-round pick out of USC, where he was one of the youngest prospects in his draft class. Lane built an impressive three-season résumé with the Trojans, hauling in 99 receptions for 1,363 yards and 18 touchdowns,

Lane’s debut was cut short in Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts, exiting with a wrist injury after catching one of three targets for 11 yards. Following high expectations for his rookie season, all eyes now shift toward his timeline to get back on the field.

A one-month timeline could force Lane to miss games against the Saints, Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and Atlanta Falcons.

Shohei Ohtani hit off a tee on Tuesday in Los Angeles and remains on track to return before the end of the regular season, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday.

“Shohei hit off the tee and felt good, too,” Roberts said. “Don’t know what’s in store for tomorrow, but I know that there’s going to be a consistent build-up. Don’t know when the time of return to play is, but today was positive, and hopefully we can just keep building towards that.”

Ohtani has been on the 15-day injured list since Sept. 8 with right biceps inflammation. Tuesday’s swings were his first since going on the IL.

The four-time MVP is not traveling with the team, but has been working out and getting treatment.

Roberts hopes Ohtani will play in a few more regular-season games. The Dodgers have already clinched a playoff spot.

“Whether it happens or not is to be determined, but I do expect him to be back to play in some regular season games,” Roberts said. “I don’t know how many.”

The two-time defending World Series champions entered Tuesday night’s game at Cincinnati with a magic number of three to clinch their 13th NL West title in 14 years.

The Philadelphia Phillies placed All-Star left-hander Jesus Luzardo on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, three days after he was scratched from a start at Atlanta because of left shoulder inflammation.

The move is retroactive to Saturday. Luzardo is eligible to return Sept. 27, the final day of the regular season.

Luzardo had an MRI on Saturday that showed no serious issues, then did not throw Sunday or Monday. Interim manager Don Mattingly said the Phillies’ medical personnel believed Luzardo was better Tuesday but not as far along as they would like.

“Nothing’s really changed as far as our thinking, anything more than just making sure he’s healthy before he pitches again,” Mattingly said before Philadelphia opened a two-game series at Washington.

His absence leaves the Phillies without one of their top starting pitchers as they try to secure a playoff spot. Philadelphia holds the second National League wild card, a half-game behind the Chicago Cubs and a game up on San Diego. The Phillies are 3 1/2 games ahead of Arizona, the next-closest team to a playoff spot.

Luzardo is 14-5 with a 2.87 ERA and made his first All-Star appearance this season. He ranks second in the NL with a career-high 221 strikeouts in 29 starts, and he threw his first career complete game in his last outing, a two-hit shutout of Atlanta on Sept. 7.

“I don’t think anyone’s worried this is long term, this is into next year or anything like that,” Mattingly said. “I think we do think he’s going to be ready to pitch at the end of the year. We just have to take care of our business to get there.”

Philadelphia recalled right-hander Grant Holman from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill Luzardo’s roster spot. Holman gave up five unearned runs while getting one out Saturday in his only appearance for the Phillies this season.

In the words of Nick Wright, the “prince who was promised” is at the top of Mahomes Mountain. However, Patrick Mahomes isn’t that prince.

Wright: “Now to the top 10. Fourth row. Joe Burrow played fine, then threw a pick-six, let the Bucs back in it, then steadied himself. He stays where he is.

“Jalen Hurts made the three biggest plays of the game. They won the game. I felt like there’s nobody on row five that deserved, you know, to move up more than him, so he moves up.”

Wright: “Moving up to row three, Caleb Williams. Moving down from the top spot of the mountain, Patrick Mahomes, and moving down Matt Stafford. 

“Caleb’s obvious. He had maybe the best game of his career. Patrick said it himself. He did not think he played that well. Patrick also does not want to be graded on an ACL curve. 

“Given how many great quarterback performances we had in Week 1, he doesn’t deserve to stay at the top of the mountain. I thought he steadied himself in the second half.”

2nd Row:

Wright: “Moving up to row two, perennial MVP candidates Lamar Jackson moves up. … I thought Lamar was outstanding.

“Josh Allen was awesome, almost, almost lost the game, but didn’t. And then, after almost losing the game, had a 100 out of 100 throw.”

With Week 1 officially over and Week 2 around the corner, Tuesday saw a mix of injury updates across the NFL as teams digested their season openers. 

Kansas City Chiefs rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane appears to have avoided a long-term injury after making a big play against the Denver Broncos, while Baltimore Ravens wideout Ja’Kobi Lane could be facing a month-long absence. 

In Chicago, Ben Johnson explained why his Bears continued to score in the fourth quarter during a blowout win over the Carolina Panthers, rather than taking their foot off the gas late.

Ben Johnson Explains Bears’ Fourth-Quarter Push

The Bears put up their highest-scoring Week 1 performance in franchise history Sunday, routing the Panthers 59-37, and head coach Ben Johnson made clear Monday that easing off wasn’t an option. Even with Chicago up 45-31 after a third-quarter touchdown run from Kyle Monangai, the offense tacked on two more scores in the fourth.

“Anytime you’re still within a couple of scores there in the fourth quarter, the game is still on, and so we needed that,” Ben Johnson said via transcript from the team. “I forget what time it was that we took the field for that last drive, and it was, ‘Guys, we want to finish the game with the ball’, and then ended up getting one to pop through, and [D’Andre Swift] ended up scoring there at the end.”

Johnson also noted how frequently Carolina’s offense had rallied from behind a season ago, adding that history stuck with the Bears’ coaching staff when preparing for the Panthers.

“It’s a credit to Carolina more than anything. We went into the game with a lot of respect for how well they could play in the fourth quarter. They had a number of games a year ago where the quarterback and the offense found a way to come back and win from behind; that was just something that was on our mind going into the game. We knew we couldn’t let off the gas.”  

The Bears’ offense will get an early test in their home opener against NFC North division rival, the Minnesota Vikings, on Sunday.

Baltimore’s receiving corps just got thinner. 

Rookie wideout Ja’Kobi Lane is expected to undergo surgery for a fractured wrist as soon as Wednesday, a procedure that could sideline him for close to a month, according to a CBS Sports report. The Ravens have reportedly not ruled out an injured reserve designation.

Lane’s absence compounds an already banged-up receiver room after Zay Flowers went down with a hamstring injury, pushing Rashod Bateman, Chris Moore and Elijah Sarratt up the depth chart. 

“Zay’s probably a little bit more like in the day-to-day range. You know, feel pretty good about where that’s at. We’ll see how the week goes,” Minter said about Flowers before adding he expected Lane to be out, “maybe a little bit longer,” Monday.

The 21-year-old third-round pick out of USC was expected to be a red-zone weapon alongside Flowers after a standout college career, but his NFL debut was cut short in Week 1 against the Colts. Lane arrived in Baltimore with plenty of hype after a three-season run at USC that produced 99 catches, 1,363 yards and 18 touchdowns, and he’d lined up as the No. 2  behind Flowers before the injury. 

A month-long absence could see Lane return for Baltimore’s game against the Falcons in October, after matchups with the New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans.

There’s encouraging news on the injury front for one of Kansas City’s top rookies. 

Cornerback Mansoor Delane is believed to have suffered only a short-term shoulder injury during Monday night’s win over Denver, according to NFL Network, with X-rays and CT scans reportedly coming back clean. Delane was still set to undergo an MRI.

The No. 6 overall pick appeared to have aggravated a shoulder issue that dated back to the offseason program and training camp. He made an instant impact anyway, hauling in his first career interception on his third career snap to end Denver’s opening possession, but he landed awkwardly on the shoulder during the play and didn’t return.

With the early word pointing to a short-term issue rather than a long-term absence, the Chiefs will be hopeful their top corner can be back in the mix quickly as the secondary settles into the regular season. 

The Chiefs host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night in Week 2.

Pete Alonso launched his 300th career home run Tuesday night, a tying shot in the ninth inning against his former team, and Coby Mayo’s inside-the-park homer in the 11th sent the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-5 victory over the New York Mets.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jeremiah Jackson also went deep for the Orioles (74-78), who stayed three games behind Cleveland for the last American League playoff spot.

Mayo snapped a 4-all tie with a three-run homer in the 11th. He connected on an 0-2 pitch from Jonathan Pintaro with two outs and sent a long drive to center field that glanced off rookie A.J. Ewing’s glove as he crashed into the fence.

The ball rolled away from Ewing as he fell to the ground, allowing Mayo to circle the bases and score standing up.

Alonso, who hit a club-record 264 homers for the Mets before signing with the Orioles last December, was hitless in his first seven plate appearances of the series before launching a 414-foot solo drive off Kodai Senga to tie the score at 3 with one out in the ninth.

A pumped-up Alonso spiked his bat toward the Orioles dugout and rounded the bases as the Citi Field crowd of 28,097 — down from 35,800 on Monday — roared.

Fans chanted his name until Alonso emerged from the dugout for a curtain call, after which chants of “Fire Stearns” aimed at Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns began.

It was Senga’s first blown save in eight chances this season.

The teams traded runs in the 10th, when Encarnacion-Strand raced home on a wild pitch and Marcus Semien laced a one-out RBI double for the Mets. Alonso struck out against Pintaro (2-2) in the 11th before Mayo’s inside-the-park homer made a winner of Alex Hoppe (1-1).

Andrew Kittredge earned his 10th save after allowing Bo Bichette’s two-out RBI single.

New York (69-82) lost its third straight and was assured of a losing season.

Carson Benge homered for the Mets, eliminated from playoff contention with Monday’s 2-1 loss to Baltimore. Jared Young had a sacrifice fly and Juan Soto delivered an RBI single.

Jacob Misiorowski struck out seven in five shutout innings and the Milwaukee Brewers won their their fourth straight National League Central title with a 5-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

About 50 minutes after the final out, the Brewers clinched the division when the second-place Chicago Cubs lost to Atlanta. Milwaukee players watched the end of that game on television, raising hands and cheering at the final out.

The flamethrowing Misiorowski (15-5) dropped his ERA to major league-best 1.89 and boosted his season strikeout total to 243. Nine of the towering right-hander’s first 10 pitches topped 100 mph and he worked around five hits — all singles — to win his fourth straight decision.

Joey Ortiz and Luis Lara drove in two runs each for the Brewers, who have become postseason fixtures for the last decade but are still seeking the franchise’s first World Series appearance since 1982. Swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers last season’s NL Championship Series, Milwaukee has qualified for the postseason for the eighth time in nine years.

The Brewers took the lead early against opener Lake Bachar (1-4) in a sequence that symbolizes the approach that’s helped them carry the major leagues’ best record for much of the season. Jake Bauers led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Lara’s sacrifice fly.

That was enough for Misiorowski, who exited after throwing 82 pitches — 43 at 100 mph or more — to strengthen his grasp on his first Cy Young Award.

Brandon Lowe hit his 30th homer for Pittsburgh and the team’s 171st of the season, tying a franchise record set in 1999. Rafael Flores Jr. added four hits for the Pirates, who fell back below .500 at 75-76 on the day the club celebrated franchise icon and Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente by wearing the outfielder’s famous No. 21.
