Aaron Glenn is sticking by the late-game decisions that helped contribute to the New York Jets’ frustrating loss to the Green Bay Packers.

No second-guessing himself. No regrets. Well, other than the end result: a 20-17 overtime defeat in a game the Jets led by 10 points in the fourth quarter.

“We have to make sure we can close the door and finish those types of games,” Glenn said Monday. “That’s something I have to make sure that I get our team into a position to be able to do that. And I understand that. I take that and it’s something I would never run from.”

But some of his play calls and clock management, especially in the fourth quarter, backfired and seemingly prevented the Jets from their first 2-0 start since 2015.

The Jets had a fourth-and-1 from the 50 with 1:20 left and Glenn went for it. Braelon Allen was stuffed for no gain, turning the ball over on downs and giving the Packers time and good field position with the game tied at 17.

“Man, we were going to try to win the game,” Glenn said. “Listen, I do not regret that decision, not one bit.”

After Christian Watson was tackled following a completed pass, the Packers faced fourth-and-5 from the Jets 45 with 1:05 left. Glenn declined to call a timeout — he had two left — and instead Green Bay let the clock wind down. The Packers were called for delay of game, resulting in a 10-second runoff, and then took a timeout for a Hail Mary try with 2 seconds remaining. Glenn finally called a timeout to set up the defense, which sacked Jordan Love to send it to overtime.

Glenn reiterated Monday what he said after the game, explaining that he and the Jets’ game management and analytics staffs discuss those types of scenarios. He pointed out the Packers had two remaining timeouts, which could’ve been used if the Jets found themselves deep in their own territory if Green Bay had punted.

“If you put yourself in a backed-up situation and things don’t go as planned, I think you give the other team an opportunity to go down there and be able to make a play,” Glenn said. “I felt like that was the right decision to do at that point.

“We actually wanted to play for overtime when it came to that.”

The Jets won the toss, took the ball and could do nothing on offense. They punted and Green Bay drove for the winning field goal.

“There’s always going to be decisions (you reconsider),” Glenn said. “I think when the clock got to 11 seconds (in the fourth quarter), I could have easily called a timeout there and forced a punt, but I don’t think one play determined the outcome of the game. We ended up getting a sack on the play.

“There are other plays in that game that, to me, determined the outcome of that game.”

Perhaps the call on fourth-and-1 from the Packers 9 with just over 11 minutes remaining. The Jets tried to draw the defense offside, then took a delay-of-game penalty and opted for a field goal to go up 17-7.

“I was willing to go up two scores just with the way the defense was playing at that time,” Glenn said. “I felt like that was the smart thing for us to do.”

But Green Bay marched down the field for a touchdown on its next possession. The Packers tied it with 2:59 left on a drive set up by Skyy Moore’s 63-yard punt return.

“It was a very winnable game and the defense gave us so many opportunities to capitalize on it,” left tackle Olu Fashanu said. “For myself and the offense, we weren’t able to capitalize.

“So I think that’s why this game hurts a little bit more than others.”

Help is on the way for the Atlanta Falcons.

Michael Penix Jr. will start at quarterback for the Falcons on Thursday night against the Green Bay Packers, the team announced Monday. 

Thursday will be Penix’s first start of the 2026 season. The Falcons are 0-2 and have the only offense in the NFL that has not reached the red zone over the first two weeks. Turnovers and inconsistency in the passing game have compounded the issues in Atlanta.

Penix missed the final seven games of 2025 after injuring his ACL and had surgery on the knee. He returned to practice on a limited basis in the spring and for most of training camp, and he was cleared for 11-on-11 work before the third and final week of the preseason.

Atlanta named Cooper Rush the starter for Week 1 after Tua Tagovailoa injured his oblique late in the week, was ruled out and has not returned to practice since.

The Falcons lost 20-13 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 and 34-3 to the Carolina Panthers in Week 2. Rush had three turnovers against the Panthers, one fumble and two interceptions, before rookie Jack Strand replaced him in the third quarter. 

Earlier this month, Penix said he wanted to be at full strength before returning. 

“I just told [head coach Kevin Stefanski] I’m not where I want to be right now,” Penix said. “And I want to be able to be 100% so I can help the team win football games. And I’m really close. Really close.”

As Week 2 of the NFL season wraps up, there’s plenty to process. Early results are already separating spot-on offseason takes from the ones aging horribly, leaving several teams under a cloud of question marks.

Colin Cowherd delivered his latest “Where I Was Right, Where I Was Wrong” segment on “The Herd” on Monday afternoon. Not only did Cowherd highlight his accurate predictions, but he also fully owned up to where he completely whiffed on some of his most confident takes.

Here’s where Colin Cowherd was right and wrong on his offseason football takes.

Where Colin Was Right

Green Bay Packers

Cowherd: I’ve said, don’t blame the Packers, blame the coach. This is an offensive culture. 100 plus yards of penalties, bottom of the league in the red zone offense, 32nd offense through two weeks according to PFF. They do not look well coached. We always want to blame the players, folks. Yes, the circumstances aren’t ideal. Well, you know what? They’re not ideal right now. With you know, everywhere except the 49ers offense.

The reality is, everybody’s banged up in this league. This is not a well coached football team. You are losing guys in the room. This is not a new staff like the Chargers with a new OC and a new offense. This is the same offense. You got to be able to. If Jordan Love is your quarterback, you cannot look like this.

Seattle Seahawks

Cowherd: I said a couple of weeks ago, Seahawks. Why can’t they repeat as Super Bowl champions? I mean, JSN to me runs the best routes in the league. Drew Lock, who I was never a fan of, subs in for Sam Darnold. They go into Arizona and Drew Lock maybe played his best game as a pro. Kenneth Walker leaves. They ran for 160 plus yards.

They are so deep. They have nailed so many draft picks. They’ve got two of everything. JSN in front of our eyes…it’s like he’s running routes that are confusing the best defensive backs. They’re 16-2 on the road. Culture roster with a backup quarterback. They are different than everybody else in the league.

Los Angeles Chargers

Cowherd: Nothing is working for the Chargers. I thought Mike McDaniel would be a revelation. They look confused. They’re snapping the ball, and it’s hitting players in motion. Receivers ending up in the same spot, they blew multiple coverages defensively yesterday. You want to play fast in football. You want to be smart, but it’s not calculus. I had them winning the division. I have not whiffed on any team more than your L.A. Chargers.

Cincinnati Bengals

Cowherd: I said the second most improved team in the league after the Giants will be the Cincinnati Bengals. They are now top four in run defense. Last year they were 32nd. They went and did what the Bengals don’t do. They spent money, and they’re like, you know what? We’re gonna buy Joe Burrow run defense because people are playing keep away from Joe Burrow. Eight sacks through two games.

They look different. I mean, they went and bought size. They went and bought dexterity and physicality. That defense is. I mean, you can just see the tackles. It’s more violent, they’re bigger, they’re faster and they’re more disruptive. I thought the defense would be much improved. I thought Cincinnati had a chance to double their win total, so we were right on that one.

Where Colin Was Wrong

San Francisco 49ers

Cowherd: Brock Purdy and the Niners look fantastic. I said that they were too old, they were too brittle and they would be third in division. I think Brock Purdy looks so far as good as any quarterback in this league. Through two weeks, Brock has been transformative. He’s not missing on anything. Nearly perfect yesterday. 149 passer rating.

He’s moving well. He’s always seen the field really, really well. But you bring in Mike Evans now. Cross your fingers. This is an old roster. Everybody’s healthy. They lost to DeMarcus Robinson yesterday. Hard to explain how, but I was wrong. They looked like a sensational high-end playoff team.

LSU Tigers

Cowherd: Lane Kiffin and LSU got whacked by Ole Miss. They trailed 24-7 at one point. Now Trinidad Chambliss, who knows if he plays on Sundays, is a sensational college quarterback. We talked about this all last season. I mean, I’m never somebody that’s going to watch a lot of Ole Miss football games.

You know, I watch the highlights. I’ve been watching this kid for two years. He is sensational, but LSU had some key penalties. You know, Lane brings a lot of attention to himself, but they didn’t live up to it. I’ll give him credit. They battled back, but they had a crucial penalty, false start, and a big moment in the second half. I liked LSU in the game, and I was wrong.

Minnesota Vikings

Cowherd: I said Minnesota is the one team in the NFL that could finish fourth or first and Brian Flores did it again. I mean, you can blame Caleb [Williams]  all you want. That staff, between Kevin O’Connell, who had a winning record. It was quarterback by committee. They didn’t know week to week who was starting at quarterback, and it’s the best division record-wise in the NFL the last several years, so that’s why I said this weekend I don’t buy the point spread. This game’s going to be close.

You’re not going to blow out in choppy weather. Kevin O’Connell and Brian Flores and Carson Wentz has always been a quarterback. I think he’s one of the better backups in the league. I don’t think he’s a guy I’m going to build around. But we were right on the Vikings, giving the Bears some problems.

USC Trojans Defense

Cowherd: I’ve been talking all season about USC’s defensive front. This team is different. They can play real defense. Give me a break. Rutgers, who lost and was manhandled by UMass, ran for over 160 yards. I don’t know what it is about Lincoln Riley. I don’t have any idea. When he goes on the road, they leave the defense in L.A. They are two different programs.

There’s the L.A. version where they can beat almost anybody, and there’s the East Coast version where they defensively get overwhelmed. Rutgers pushed USC’s defensive front all over the field, and don’t get me wrong. There’s a wide receiver named KJ Duff for Rutgers. He’s going to play in the pros. He’s really good, but I mean they ran about 13, 15, 18 slant patterns and they all seem to work.

Week 2 of the NFL season did not provide as many offensive fireworks as the opening week, but a pair of NFC stars stood out among the rest.

Bryce Young and Jaxon Smith-Njigba each led their teams to victory by accounting for three touchdowns in Week 2.

On the latest episode of FOX Sports’ “Gronk & Jules,” Edelman chose the Carolina Panthers quarterback and Gronkowski picked the Seattle Seahawks receiver as their Employees of the Week. 

Julian Edelman’s Employee Of The Week

Young completed 23 of 36 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Darren Waller, in a 34-3 win over the Atlanta Falcons. 

“I think Bryce Young had an unbelievable game,” Edelman said. “Doesn’t make too many self-inflicting mistakes. He’ll take what the defense gives him. He hits the big opportunity when they give him the big opportunity. He’s been really fun to watch, and he’s coming into his own.”

The performance followed a Week 1 game in which Young threw for 361 yards in a 59-37 loss to the Chicago Bears.

“They’ve scored a lot of points these last two weeks,” Edelman said. “He’s been getting better every week. For 5’10 at quarterback, it’s crazy.”

Gronkowski pointed to Young’s benching back in 2024 as the turning point. Head coach Dave Canales sat Young in favor of Andy Dalton after Carolina’s 0-2 start to the 2024 season. 

“The benching was totally accurate,” Gronkowski said. “It was necessary, and everyone thought there was no argument to the benching.”

Gronkowski said Dalton’s play as the starter “kind of lit a spark,” and he joked that Young took the fiery hair off Dalton and the heat that came with it.

“Bryce Young has been the quarterback that the Carolina Panthers have wanted Bryce Young to be since that benching,” Gronkowski said. “He gets better every year.”

Rob Gronkowski’s Employee Of The Week

Smith-Njigba caught nine passes for 155 yards and a career-high three touchdowns in a 31-7 win over the Arizona Cardinals. It was the first time in his career that he scored three touchdowns in one game. 

Drew Lock started at quarterback in place of Sam Darnold, who was out with a gluteus injury, and threw all three touchdown passes to Smith-Njigba, including an 82-yard catch on Seattle’s first passing attempt of the game. 

“I’m going to go with JSN,” Gronkowski said. “He had nine catches, 155 yards. He had three touchdowns, which is a career best for him. He proved once again why he was offensive player of the year and that it wasn’t a mistake. The voters got it right. There’s no doubt about it.”

Gronkowski said Seattle would not be 2-0 without Smith-Njigba, pointing to the receiver’s touchdown in the Week 1 game against New England as a play that could have changed the outcome. The win over Arizona was Seattle’s 12th in a row, including the postseason. 

Edelman focused on how Smith-Njigba gets separation from defenders.

“He’s just a really smooth route runner, and he outruns people,” Edelman said. “This guy just outruns people, and he’s smooth with it. He doesn’t move his body when he cuts.”

Gronkowski went on to explain how defenders cannot tell when Smith-Njigba is going to break.

“You think that’s his out route, and then boom, he just breaks up again,” Gronkowski said. “He’s one of the hardest players to defend in all of football. He’s just really special.”

Both players are in action again in Week 3. Young and the Panthers visit the Cleveland Browns. Smith-Njigba and the Seahawks play at the Washington Commanders.

Between NFL Week 2 odds and college football Week 3 odds, there was no shortage of high-rollers making major wagers. There were five- and six-figure bets aplenty, and even an eye-watering seven-figure play.

But on a Sunday of upsets in the NFL, arguably the best bet of the weekend was a relatively modest three-figure underdog parlay that netted a healthy five-figure profit.

More on that wager, a million-dollar loser and a Thursday night payday for the public betting masses, as we recap the weekend that was in football betting.

Dog Day Afternoon

The public was all over the Ravens on Sunday. Ditto for the Buccaneers, and to a slightly lesser extent, the Bears, after they put up a whopping 59 points in Week 1.

Baltimore and Tampa Bay were 8.5-point home favorites vs. the Saints and Browns, respectively. But both the Ravens and Bucs tumbled outright, with Baltimore falling 24-17 and Tampa losing 24-19.

Add in the Vikings’ 9-3 win over the Bears, and the bookmakers were doing cartwheels in the risk room.

But at least one bettor had the foresight to cash out nicely on an upset-riddled Sunday. At Caesars Sports, a customer put together this $500 underdog parlay:

• Saints moneyline +320
• Browns moneyline +325
• Vikings moneyline +183

The bettor needed three upsets and got three upsets. At odds of +4952, or just shy of 50/1, the customer’s 500 bucks turned into $25,258.

That’s a fine day’s work.

Million-Dollar Downfall

Over the past week, Station Sports in Las Vegas took two seven-figure wagers from the same customer. The first was a $1 million bet on Chiefs’ moneyline -145 vs. Broncos, in the Week 1 Monday night game.

Kansas City rolled to a 31-10 victory, and the big bettor banked $689,655 profit, for a total payout of $1,689,655.

But sports betting giveth, and sports betting taketh away. 

In the Thursday night Lions-Bills showdown, the customer came back with another $1 million bet, on Lions’ alternate spread +1.5.

That meant Detroit either had to lose by just one point or win the game outright. Instead, the Bills buried the Lions into a 21-0 first-half hole, and though Detroit put up a second-half fight, Jared Goff & Co. lost 41-31.

So that’s a million-dollar meltdown. Oof.

Public Payday

Speaking of the Thursday night game, contrary to the high-roller’s loss, the public made out like gangbusters, particularly because it was a high-scoring affair.

At Caesars, a customer put $100 on a six-leg parlay tied to touchdown scorers, of which there were plenty:

• Josh Allen First Touchdown Scorer
• Amon-Ra St. Brown Anytime TD
• James Cook Anytime TD
• Jahmyr Gibbs Anytime TD
• Dalton Kincaid Anytime TD
• Sam LaPorta Anytime TD

The odds of Allen scoring first and the other five players finding paydirt at any point were a hefty +50000, or 500/1 in easier-to-digest terms.

But all six legs delivered, and the customer cashed out for $50,000.

At Fanatics Sportsbook, a bettor turned a mere $25 into $7,500 profit before halftime.

Odds of all three scoring were a healthy +20000 (200/1), but the customer utilized a 50% profit boost to hike those odds to +30000 (300/1).

The home favorite winning and covering also paid for the public, and for a big bettor at DraftKings Sportsbook.

The customer put $110,000 on Bills -5.5 (-108) to turn a profit of $101,851 (total payout $211,851).

At Kalshi, a trader put $2,825 on Bills wideout Joshua Palmer Anytime Touchdown. Palmer was priced at 12%, which correlates to about +734 in betting odds.

The customer didn’t have to wait long to get paid, with Palmer hauling in a 43-yard TD pass that put the Bills up 14-0 in the first quarter. The trader pocketed $20,723 in profit, for a total payout of $23,549.

Parlay Partay

How about a more relatable wager amount of, say, $10? 

A Fanatics customer strung together six Anytime TD Scorers across the Sunday late window and the Sunday night Colts-Chiefs clash.

By the time Indy-K.C. kicked off, the first four legs were in on a wager with massive odds of +90694, just shy of 907/1. Then Colts tight end Tyler Warren scored the game’s first TD midway through the first quarter, and Kelce scored in the first quarter, as well.

That’s how 10 bucks becomes $9,074.94.

On another $10 parlay, a FanDuel Sports customer went with First Touchdown Scorers, tabbing Ravens running back Derrick Henry, Bengals wideout Ja’Marr Chase and Bucs wideout Emeka Egbuka.

Henry and Chase each broke the ice late in the first quarter, vs. the Saints and Texans, respectively. But interestingly, Browns-Bucs didn’t see a touchdown until five-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter.

Fortunately for the bettor, that TD came from Egbuka. At odds of +28077 (about 281/1), that $10 bill transformed into $2,817.

Prediction Market Winners & Losers

Prediction markets remain a controversial topic, but are still operating and seeing a lot of football trades made across the country. And there were some eye-poppingly big transactions over the weekend.

At Polymarket, a customer put $423,110 on the Chiefs to not cover the 6.5-point spread vs. the Colts. It was a back-and-forth battle all Sunday night, ultimately going to overtime, and K.C. indeed did not cover in a 33-30 victory.

The trader profited $360,428, for a total payout of $783,538.

Other notable trade contracts:

• $359,078 Cowboys to beat Commanders (Polymarket). Dallas rolled 37-20, and at a price of 66%, the trader profited $184,981 (total payout $544,059).
• $296,791 Bears to beat Vikings (Kalshi). That’s six figures in the loss column, with the Bears falling 9-3.
• $177,930 Titans to beat Eagles (KalshI). This was painfully close to cashing, but Tennessee gave up a TD with nine seconds left to lose 24-20. At a price of 25% (+300), the customer was this close to netting a whopping $533,790 profit.
• $131,978 Ole Miss to beat LSU (Kalshi). The Rebels let a 24-7 lead slip away, but held on for a 32-24 victory, giving the customer a $157,251 profit (total payout $289,229).

Here’s Hoping You Had It

It’s not all about making big bets or cashing out huge on a 10-leg parlay. Which, to be clear, is rare.

Sometimes, it’s about putting 10 bucks on a single straight bet, backing a long shot or semi-long shot, and getting a solid return on investment.

For example, at FanDuel, Titans QB Cam Ward was 125/1 to score two touchdowns vs. the Eagles. Ward had the game’s first score, with 4:22 left in the first quarter, then ran it in again late in the third quarter while nearly engineering a big upset.

Ultimately, Tennessee lost 24-20. But if you’d put a tenner on Ward to score two or more TDs, then you’d be sitting on $1,250 profit today. If you got frisky and put $100 on it, then you’d have $12,500.

In the more realistic realm, Colts tight end Tyler Warren was +1500 in First TD Scorer for Sunday’s game vs. the Chiefs. He scored midway through the first quarter to put Indy up 7-0.

Ten bucks on that would’ve netted $150, and a C-note would’ve paid out $1,500.

And how about this, from Circa Sports here in Las Vegas: No Touchdown Scorer in the Bears-Vikings game was a +26000 bomb (260/1).

Minnesota won an absolute snoozer of a game 9-3, with four field goals accounting for all the scoring. Circa took two bets on that market, at a whopping sum of $1 apiece. But those two customers turned that dollar into $260 profit.

I Like Big Bets and I Cannot Lie

That $1 million Lions bet was the largest reported wager of the week. The next biggest actually got to the pay window, on one of the aforementioned upsets.

A DraftKings Sportsbook customer put $250,000 on Vikings +4.5 (-102) vs. Bears. So Minnesota winning outright made an outright winner of that bettor, who profited $245,098 (total payout $495,098).

Other notable major wagers on NFL Week 2 odds and college football Week 3 odds:

• $175,000 Georgia moneyline -3500 vs. Arkansas (Caesars). As those odds show, the Bulldogs were huge favorites and coasted 45-17. But at that price, the bettor profited just $5,000 (total payout $180,000)
• $129,240 Lions-Bills Under 54.5. That was a regrettable decision, as Detroit and Buffalo combined for 72 points Thursday night
• $60,000 Colts +6.5 (-113) vs. Chiefs. Indy covers in a 33-30 OT loss, and the bettor profits $53,087 (total payout $113,097)
• $50,000 Jets moneyline +170 vs. Packers (DraftKings). New York nearly got there, but fell short 20-17 in overtime
• $45,000 LSU moneyline -155 vs. Ole Miss. The Tigers rallied from a 24-7 deficit to tie it at 24, but fell short 32-24

And though not exactly a major wager, $2,155 is nothing to scoff at, either. Caesars Sports took that bet on Kentucky in-game moneyline +800 vs. Texas A&M, likely after the Wildcats went down 7-0 in the second quarter.

But it was all Kentucky from there. The ‘Cats, 16.5-point road underdogs, put up the next 28 points en route to a shocking 31-21 road upset.

So the bettor bagged $17,240 profit.

With regard to all the aforementioned big bets and people taking fliers on six-leg parlays and such, just keep in mind that this is gambling. Keep your bet size and expectations reasonable. Never bet more than you can afford to lose

I played offensive line for eight seasons in the NFL, and before that I spent my Saturdays in Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon, blocking for guys who ended up on lists like this one. So when I watch college football now, I watch for the stuff that signaled to me in the huddle whether a guy was for real.

I’m picking the 10 players who impressed me most during the previous weekend. Not just the gaudiest stat lines, but the performances that hold up when you turn the tape on. Some weeks, that’ll be an edge rusher wreaking havoc. Other weeks, it’ll be a lineman you’ve never heard of who didn’t lose a rep all afternoon. I have a soft spot for those guys. 

Week 2 belonged to the quarterbacks. Let’s get into it.

Trinidad is on a generational run since the start of the College Football Playoff last season. He was fantastic in all three CFP games and now he’s started 2026 with two excellent outings against ranked opponents. Against LSU on Saturday night, he threw for 363 yards and two touchdowns. His play-making ability looks easy and he’s effortless when throwing the ball.

West Virginia smoked rival Virginia as double-digit underdogs thanks to Hawkins Jr. He threw for 190 but also added 123 rushing yards. The signal caller contributed to all five Mountaineer touchdowns with two passing and three rushing for five total in the game. He was the engine for the offense.

The Miami quarterback started his first road game for the Hurricanes by completing 24 straight passes, three shy of breaking the FBS record. He was super efficient in finding the open receiver and when his favorite target left the game, he was able to move the ball on offense without him.

Indiana lost two receivers to the NFL after their title run and Becker might be better than both of them. All he does is catch touchdown passes for Indiana. He added another one against Western Kentucky to bring his total to six for the season. He caught five passes for a whopping 127 yards. That’s 25 yards a reception. Becker is a game-changer at receiver for the Hoosiers.

Keelon Russell put Alabama on his back in Saturday’s 50-36 win over Florida State. He completed 23 of 30 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns while adding 56 rushing yards and another score.

Russell became just the third quarterback in Alabama history to record at least 300 passing yards and 50 rushing yards in a game. He is also the first Crimson Tide signal caller to throw for at least 300 yards, three passing touchdowns, a rushing TD, and zero interceptions. 

Sheppard is the best running back that no one is talking about. In just three games for the Blue Devils he’s got 528 yards on 82 carries, good for 6.4 yards per attempt. In Duke’s dominating win against Stanford he carried 23 times for 154 yards and two scores.

Sammy Omoisgho was a machine for the Bruins on Saturday against Purdue. He had 12 tackles, 11 of which were solo. He also added two sacks and two forced fumbles which UCLA turned into a touchdown as Purdue was driving to take the lead. Omosigho is just the second Bruin since 2013 to register two sacks and wo forced fumbles in a single game. 

Reynolds is a name you’re going to start hearing come draft time. He had 12 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown against Maryland this weekend. He was unstoppable with some high difficulty catches.

If this was a space to celebrate coaches, I’d have Kentucky’s Will Stein No. 1 for the week. However, his quarterback will get the love for the teams’ awesome performance on Saturday. They upset Texas A&M on the road, and beat the Aggies for the first time since 1952. Minchey was 14 of 18 for 252 yards and two touchdowns. A clean game is what’s needed for a road upset and he had it.

I highlighted his favorite receiving target last week and now Atkinson gets the love. The Mercer transfer quarterback had 333 yards and five touchdown passes against Montana. The Beavers are 1-2 but the vibes are high in Corvallis during a rebuild season.

Indiana quarterback Josh Hoover’s statistics — and bloody image — speak for themselves.

He’s been efficient and tough through his first three games with the fifth-ranked and still unbeaten Hoosiers. He’s completed more than 72% of his passes, thrown 10 touchdown passes and no interceptions while posting the second-best passing efficiency rating in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

In his debut two weeks ago, Hoover threw four touchdown passes with only three incompletions and delivered an indelible image during the Hoosiers’ 52-16 victory over North Texas: his bloodied face and chin strap, after an opponent yanked hard on his facemask.

He apparently has no bigger fan than coach Curt Cignetti. On Monday the two-time Associated Press Coach of the Year defended his quarterback against those criticizing Hoover, the successor to Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza.

“I think there is too much scrutiny on Josh Hoover right now — unfair scrutiny,” Cignetti said near the end of his weekly news conference. “After watching the game tape, he missed one throw. The one he missed to (Charlie) Becker, we did a bad job picking up the blitz at running back and he had a guy in his face.”

Hoover provided his own critique during Saturday’s postgame availability, saying there were some throws he wanted back in the 38-0 rout of Western Kentucky. Still, he finished the game 18 of 24 for 273 yards with two more TDs and no turnovers.

Hoover believes he can still play better.

“I think it goes back to what coach always preaches, right? There’s a standard we’re trying to play and that standard is perfection and to play to the best of our capabilities,” Hoover said Saturday. “The goal is always to reach that and sometimes we fall short, so that’s the thing that keeps you driving forward. But we’ve done good stuff, have some things we have to clean up.”

Not much has changed for Indiana.

The defending national champs have won their first three games by a total of 145-16 even though Hoover, who has a passer efficiency rating of 243.9, left each one early. The defense has pitched back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1993 and has not allowed a point in nine straight quarters.

And while Cignetti knows the numbers haven’t come against the strongest schedule, he also knows this revamped Indiana team needed a lighter schedule before opening league play Friday night when they host Northwestern (2-0).

“It’s been a nice run,” he said Saturday. “Of course, we get criticized because we kind of play an exhibition season before we go into Big Ten play. I can understand that. But those exhibition seasons have been real valuable for us. Last year, we played 16 games and we were 16-0 — I don’t think anyone had done that since 1893, 1894 or something. We needed these games to learn about ourselves, our guys, where we are, and what we have to do to be the best we can be.”

Hoover, a transfer from TCU who initially committed to the Indiana program when he was in high school, has been vital in getting those pieces aligned.

Becker, a holdover from last year’s national championship run, has been the Hoosiers top receiver with 12 catches, 272 yards and six TDs, putting him on a pace to shatter the school’s single season record for TD catches, 16 set by the late James Hardy.

Most of the other key offensive players are new.

Leading rusher Turbo Richard is a transfer from Boston College and a season-ending injury limited running back Lee Beebe Jr. to just three games at Indiana in 2025 after he left UAB. Indiana is also waiting for running back Khobie Martin to return from an arm injury.

Receiver Nick Marsh had his best game yet with Indiana, catching seven passes for 81 yards and started displaying some of the potential the Hoosiers saw in the former Michigan State star.

But Hoover’s teammates seem pleased with his steady progression and the blunt-talking Cignetti has no complaints, either.

“I’m glad he’s our quarterback,” Cignetti said.
