Whoa, Pharoah! 4 Takeaways From Egypt’s Penalty Shootout Win Over

Egypt continued to make history as its penalty shootout victory over Australia gave the Pharaohs a ticket to the round of 16 for the first time since 1934 and their first ever win in the World Cup knockout stages.

It was a determined performance in Dallas from Hossam Hassan’s side, which mostly dominated the game with its possession but had to find a way to break through at the end on penalties. And it did it in perfect fashion, scoring every one.

FULL PENALTIES ️ Australia vs Egypt 2026 FIFA World Cup™ Round of 32 –>

For Australia? Despite the resilient performance, questions will arise about the selection of players who took a penalty, as it included the 18-year-old Lucas Herrington and Harry Souttar from Leicester City — both defenders.

Regardless, Egypt celebrates as it has made the round of 16 for the first time in 92 years. It was wonderful to see Mo Salah especially make it this far. He was obviously emotional after the game, and justifiably so.

Here are my takeaways:

1. Mo Salah Still Special In So Many Ways

During the group stage, Salah had 11 chances, including three that turned into goals. Against Australia, however, he was very quiet by his standards. It was likely due to his recent issues with a hamstring problem, so it slowed him down.

But it was also augmented by the fact that Australia’s resilient defending and evolved gameplay forced Egypt — and Salah — to chase the ball in the second half. At 34 years old, it was not surprising to see him struggle slightly.

But then, in extra time, it was almost as if he did a Mario Kart version of picking up a star and reigniting, providing a lot of threat on the right wing. And in the penalty shootout, he delivered a clutch finish, which was almost a panenka. That’s why Hassan kept his captain through the full game, because he knew that Salah’s impact could happen in an instant.

2. Emam Ashour Showed His Swagger

We all know about Salah’s obvious attention and his impact on Egypt. And others such as Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush and veteran playmaker Trezeguet, who has had a long career that included a three-year stint with Aston Villa.

But Emam Ashour has been so clinical for this team before and during this tournament. His goal today was classic poacher with a hint of prowler as he headed in the ball from Karim Hafez.

Ashour is known for using Conor McGregor’s “Billionaire Strut” as a celebration and his performances have definitely warranted some swagger.

At age 28, he’s mostly stayed in Egypt’s domestic league aside from a very brief stint at Danish side Midtjylland. He could earn himself a move back to Europe if he continues to impress.

3. Socceroos Were Resilient For 120 Minutes …

Australia most definitely deserved the equalizer and the fight to take this to a shootout in the first place. The goal was thanks to a wonderful cross from NYCFC midfielder Aiden O’Neill. The height advantage was an obvious strength for Tony Popovic’s side and O’Neill’s set piece was just too good for it not to end as a goal, even if it didn’t come from one of his teammates.

And then there was Australia’s defensive commitment, including from the aforementioned goalkeepers. Overall, it was incredibly impressive as theSocceroos did everything and anything possible to deny Egypt’s attack.

Goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who made only two appearances for the national team before this tournament, made some fantastic stops, including an incredible save at the end of the regular time, denying Rami Rabia’s strong header.

He came off just before the end of extra time to be replaced by the veteran Mat Ryan, who came in for the penalty shootout.

4. … But Poor Penalty Decisions Undid Them

This is where Australia got it wrong. I understand that Souttar is the captain and wanted to lead by example, but for him to take the first penalty just didn’t seem right. I just didn’t think a center back should have been the first player to step up.

And then there was the teenager Lucas Herrington, yet another center back, who also missed his attempt. Look, this was absolutely not his fault. I felt that it was just too much pressure to put on the young man’s shoulders — and sadly it was. He will overcome this, I am positive. But with these high stakes, the responsibility should have gone to someone else.

Classy Folarin Balogun Handling ‘Unjust’ World Cup Red Card The

SEATTLE — It is exceedingly rare for a player who has been robbed of the opportunity to compete in the biggest match of his life — in this case, the U.S. men’s national team’s round of 16 match against Belgium at the FIFA World Cup — to chat with a horde of reporters about that heartbreak. It’s more impressive still that Folarin Balogun did just that on Friday, his 25th birthday, without displaying even a hint of frustration or anger.

Yet there was the star USA striker flashing his 1000-watt smile just after being informed by a team staffer that FIFA had issued just a one-game suspension for the controversial red card he picked up after scoring the game-winning goal vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina two nights earlier in Northern California.

“That’s good,” Balogun deadpanned before grinning widely as the assembled media members erupted in laughter.

–>

With three goals in the three games he’s played at this World Cup, Balogun has emerged as one of the faces of the national team over the last few weeks. He’s possibly the most complete striker the U.S. has ever had, and Mauricio Pochettino’s side will miss him mightily against the Belgians, FIFA’s 10th-ranked squad.

Making it worse is the fact that the play that saw Balogun sent off following video review should never have been flagged to referee Raphael Claus under FIFA’s own protocols. Standing just yards away, Claus didn’t even issue Balogun a yellow card for his inadvertent, accidental step onto the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic.

The Brazilian official flashed the red only after seeing the slow-motion replay.

“For me, it’s important to be fair, even when I’m giving my opinion,” Balogun said. “There’s scenarios that you simply can’t avoid, and that has to be taken into context when it’s being reviewed. I felt it wasn’t on this occasion.”

“There’s nowhere else to put your leg,” he added. “It’s going to be unavoidable … I think a yellow card would have been fair.”

U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino defended Balogun passionately in his post-game press conference. So did every one of his teammates.

–>

None of it matters. FIFA doesn’t allow true appeals of red cards; only if Balogun had been hit with a longer ban than the automatic one-match given for a red card would the U.S. Soccer Federation had any recourse to ask soccer’s governing body to reconsider.

Even in the moment, though, Balogun barely protested.

“I never want to react out of anger and out of emotion,” he said. “There’s still lots of people we’re inspiring — little kids, boys and girls who are watching, you know, and you have to show them the correct way to handle things, even when you think it’s unjust. So I felt I did that.”

“I’m happy with the support I’m receiving from the team,” he continued.  “We’re all looking forward to seeing what we can do against Belgium.”

Without Balogun, an already tall task becomes harder. The other two strikers on the roster, Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright, have different qualities.

Pepi is a lethal finisher but not quite as adept at holding off opposing center backs with his back to the goal. He has started two games without scoring. Wright, six inches taller, is better in the air and has experience playing as a winger for Premier League-bound Coventry City, but isn’t quite as effective combining with others in open play.

–>

Pochettino could start Christian Pulisic up top, as he did in a March exhibition against Portugal. But the coach would then have another hole to fill in a playmaking role, and there’s no obvious candidate who can also press defensively the way the hard-running Pulisic does — especially against a foe that is expected to have the bulk of the possession.

“When you miss a player like Balo, obviously things change a little bit,” said U.S. midfielder Tyler Adams. “But we’ve been flexible. Guys have shown that they’re ready to play, if it’s Pepi, if it’s Haji, if we go a different direction. Who knows? I’m not the coach. But it should be an exciting opportunity for whoever has to step up.”

–>

That’s what Pepi did when Pulisic was forced to sit out the group stage win over Australia because of a calf injury, helping create space for Balogun in the build up to the own goal that stood up as the eventual winner.

The good news is that Balogun will be rested to face either Portugal or Spain if the Americans can advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.

From the bench, Balogun will be their biggest fan.

“My role is just to continue to support everybody, to keep morale high,” he said. “The team comes first whether I’m out there or not.”

Lionel Messi Extends Multiple Records With 20th World Cup Goal

It’s another goal and another all-time record for Lionel Messi.

Messi scored his 20th career FIFA World Cup goal in Argentina’s round of 16 match against Cape Verde on Friday at Miami Stadium, extending his own record for the most by any man or woman in FIFA World Cup history and bringing his tournament-leading tally up to seven goals.

MESSI MAGIC ⭐️ Lionel Messi Scores His 20th FIFA World Cup™ Goal For Argentina

MESSI MAGIC ⭐️ Lionel Messi Scores His 20th FIFA World Cup™ Goal For Argentina –>

Messi is the first player to score seven or more goals in multiple editions of the World Cups. He scored seven goals at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, but finished one behind Kylian Mbappé for the Golden Boot. Messi currently leads the Golden Boot race, one ahead of Mbappé.

It also marked his eighth consecutive World Cup match with a goal, the longest streak in the tournament’s history, and his fifth consecutive knockout stage match with a goal, something no player has accomplished since World Cup records started being tracked in the 1960s. He has 12 goals in his eight-game scoring streak at the World Cup.

Cape Verde is the 14th opponent Messi has scored against, extending his record for the most opponents scored against by a single player in World Cup history. Jürgen Klinsmann, Ronaldo Nazário, and Miroslav Klose are the next closest players, having each scored against 10 different opponents in World Cup history.

If Argentina advances past Cape Verde in the round of 32, it will play Egypt in the round of 16 on Tuesday, July 7 at Atlanta Stadium.

USA Coach Mauricio Pochettino To Throw Out First Pitch At

U.S. men’s national team coach Mauricio Pochettino will throw the first pitch before Friday night’s Major League Baseball game between the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays, which the team was invited to attend.

Pochettino played catch with a few of his players before Friday’s practice at Husky Soccer Stadium. The U.S. plays Belgium in the World Cup round of 16 on Monday at Seattle Stadium.

Pochettino has also joined tens of thousands of fans in singing John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” after the USA wins. The 54-year-old coach, who was born in Argentina and lives in Spain, has fully embraced the American experience this summer.

U.S. forward Folarin Balogun, who was born in the New York City borough of Brooklyn to Nigerian parents but raised in London, marveled at the opportunities he, his teammates and the coaching staff have been afforded.

“I think that sort of stuff can only happen in America. So, I’m very, very proud,” Balogun said. “This is a unique experience for me, being in the World Cup in your home nation. And, I think you’re seeing, we’ve been able to be so focused, but, at the same time have so many things we can do to distract ourselves and to take our mind off the high-pressure environment. This evening will be another opportunity to do that.”

How England’s Harry Kane Has Become Lionel Messi-Esque This World

England’s Harry Kane has become Lionel Messi-esque in terms of his value to the collective cause, with Stan Collymore explaining to GOAL why that is a good thing and how the Three Lions’ record goalscorer is benefiting from a mindset that others have lacked. The prolific Bayern Munich frontman is leading another bid for World Cup glory at present, with a star-studded squad often being carried on his back.

England’s GOAT: Kane Crucial To The Three Lions’ Collective Cause

That has been the case for some time now, with pre-tournament questions asked about how coach Thomas Tuchel’s troops would fare if their talismanic captain were to pick up an untimely injury. Fortunately for all concerned, no solution to that problem has been required as yet.

After finding the target on 61 occasions at club level last season, becoming a two-time Bundesliga title winner in the process, Kane has netted five times at the 2026 World Cup.

World Cup Golden Boot: Kane Has Five Goals To His Name

He opened World Cup competition with a brace against Croatia, before grabbing another in dramatic fashion as England battled against DR Congo in the round of 32. He also helped the Three Lions defeat Panama, taking his international goal tally to 84 and counting.

It is scary to think where England would be without their free-scoring No. 9, as he occupies a talent pool alongside Argentine GOAT Messi – with Argentina another of those that would see overall standards dip considerably if one match-altering talent were to be removed from their ranks.

Why Kane Has Become Messi-Esque, And How He Reached That Level

Quizzed on whether Kane has reached that level and how he came to end up there, former Three Lions striker Collymore — speaking courtesy of BetTOM – told GOAL: “You could argue that, yes, but also Harry Kane plays a lot of games for England, so you don’t know what it would be like if he wasn’t playing for example.

“I’m not suggesting for a minute that Ollie Watkins or, I don’t know, a Morgan Rogers playing as a frontman or a Jude Bellingham playing as a frontman would add the consistency of output. But we just don’t know. And that’s one of the things we’re going to have to find out, of course, when Harry Kane finally hangs up his England boots because the cupboard is bare, really, if we’re looking at young, upcoming central strikers. They aren’t there in the 21s, they’re not there in the 20s or the 19s, so it’s an issue and a problem that we’re going to have to face on another day.

Collymore also noted that Kane’s goal total should’ve boosted his confidence throughout tournaments and games, but it did not show in the 2024 Euros when they reached the final against Spain.

“But in terms of his output, if you’re scoring 60-odd goals in German football, you’re going to arrive at a tournament with the kind of confidence that to be honest he didn’t have at the Euros. I thought he had a disappointing Euros that was perhaps compounded a little bit by one or two niggly injuries.

“But yes, I think that Thomas Tuchel said the other day ‘Argentina rely on Messi, France rely on (Kylian) Mbappe and why wouldn’t we rely on Harry Kane?’ Why is that such a bad thing, such a negative?

“But in terms of what he’s given the England national team over a number of years now he’s turned up and he’s been consistent. He’s wanted to play for England and I think that’s been the most important thing at a time when it would be very easy to prioritise club football over international football, and many players do that — a lot of players don’t turn up for friendlies for their country, they turn up for the big tournaments.

As Kane and the Three Lions prepare for their round of 16 showdown with Spain, Collymore said that Kane continuing to get reps is only going to benefit his performance on the field.

“The most important thing for Harry Kane is that he’s getting his just deserts and his just rewards for being consistently in every squad — Nations League, friendlies, qualification games, tournament games — and that’s why I think that he’s so important for England.

“At times when other players have perhaps dipped out of one or two squads and you think Gareth Southgate created this great squad environment, then other managers come in and perhaps find Thomas Tuchel a little bit prickly and say ‘well, do I want to be a part of this?’ Harry Kane, whoever it’s been, has been consistent, he’s turned up and he’s delivered for England.

“it’s that consistency really that’s led to this point in a way that I don’t think it would have if it had been an England camp and an England environment where it would have been ‘oh well, you can miss these two or three friendlies Harry, just turn up for the qualifiers or for the main thing’. That consistency of turning up has been really crucial and really key for him as a captain and for him as a goalscorer.”

England Fixtures: Round Of 16 Showdown With Mexico Next Up For Kane And Co

Kane continues to lead by example, as Messi does with World Cup titleholders Argentina, and is hoping to get his hands on the grandest of prizes this summer — bringing 60 years of trophy-chasing to a close for the battle-weary Three Lions.

England will, as they look to their greatest goalscorer for inspiration once again, be back in action on Sunday when taking in a testing last-16 encounter with Mexico that will play out at altitude in the iconic surroundings of Mexico City Stadium.

Who Is Argentina’s Next World Cup Opponent?

Anything can happen at the World Cup, and Friday’s round of 32 matches almost featured perhaps the biggest World Cup upset ever. Almost.

Argentina pulled out a 3-2 dramatic victory over Cape Verde, the tournament’s fan-favorite Cinderella story. It was tied up for most of the second half to force extra time — one goal from Lionel Messi and an equalizer from Deroy Duarte — but the goals kept coming.

Argentina’s Lisandro Martínez scored in the first couple minutes of extra time, but Cape Verde’s Sidny Lopes Cabral scored an equalizer in the 103rd minute.

And then the defending world champs came through in the clutch. Diney Borges scored the go-ahead goal in the 111th minute, and Argentina held on for the 3-2 win.

Now, what’s next for Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup? Here is a look at which team Argentina will play in the round of 16 and its potential path to making the World Cup final.

Who Will Argentina Play In The Round Of 16?

Following the win over Cape Verde in the round of 32, Argentina will play Egypt, which beat Australia in a shootout Friday, in the round of 16.

Argentina-Egypt will take place at Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday, July 7, at noon ET on FOX and FOX One.

Who Could Argentina Play In The Quarterfinals?

If Argentina advances past Egypt in the round of 16, it has two possible opponents it could play in the quarterfinals: Switzerland — which beat Algeria in the round of 32 to advance — and Colombia, who beat Ghana in the round of 32.

If Argentina advances, the quarterfinals match will take place at Kansas City Stadium on Saturday, July 11, at 9 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One.

Who Could Argentina Play In The Semifinals?

If Argentina advances to the semifinals of the World Cup, it has four possible opponents: the winner of England vs. Mexico or the winner of Brazil vs. Norway.

If Argentina continues, its semifinal match will take place at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, July 15, at 3 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One.

Best World Cup Goals: The Top 50 Goals Of The

In the biggest edition of the World Cup yet, we’ve already seen more goals than ever before — and we’ve already witnessed some bangers and golazos in just group play.

Lionel Messi continued to do what he does best and make history, but several other superstars have already shown out, too. Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland already have multiple braces, while Ousmane Dembélé scored a hat trick in France’s final match of group play.

But which goals have been the best so far in the 2026 FIFA World Cup? We are here to let you know which goals are the best of the best.

1. Cabral Keeps Cape Verde’s Upset Bid vs. Argentina Alive

There are golazos, and then there are golazos that nearly transcend sports.

As Cape Verde needed another goal to level its round-of-32 match against Argentina, Sidny Lopes Cabral delivered a goal that will be remembered by soccer fans for quite possibly the history of time. In the 103rd minute, Cabral went end-to-end and scored a top-bins goal from the edge of the opposite side of the box.

Cabral’s goal tied the match, but Argentina took the lead in the second extra time and wound up defeating Cape Verde. Still, Cabral’s goal should stand the test of time, as the goal nearly set up one of the greatest upsets in the history of the World Cup.

2. Nusa’s Curler Stuns Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast vs. Norway was one of the best matchups of the round of 32 for diehard soccer fans, and the opening goal was worthy of that.

Martin Ødegaard played the ball to Antonio Nusa on the left wing, and the RB Leipzig playmaker went at two defenders before cutting in on his right foot and delivering a beautiful finish just inside the far post. It was the kind of goal that we haven’t seen yet in the tournament that ignited the game.

3. Diallo’s Amazing Control Equalizes

Amad Diallo has thrived so far in the World Cup, scoring a pair of big goals off the bench for the Ivory Coast. His second was one of the best of the tournament.

The Manchester United winger played a clever one-two with Nicolas Pépé that saw him charging toward Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland. Diallo delivered a clever touch to get the ball back on his left foot before chipping the ball into the far corner. It was a huge goal for the Ivory Coast, but ultimately one that could not impact the result.

4. Messi Stuns K.C. With Amazing Finish

On a night when Lionel Messi scored an astonishing three goals (his first-ever World Cup hat trick), the first one stood out the most.

Algeria gave Messi too much space in the middle of the field, and he made them pay. Argentina’s captain and superstar delivered a magical goal to open his account at the 2026 World Cup.

Messi picked up the ball in midfield and was able to turn toward the goal. He dribbled forward, put the ball on his left foot and put the ball in the top corner. It was a moment of magic from Messi, who had a goal ruled out for offside in the early minutes of the game.

Two more goals ensued, but this set up what would be an unforgettable night in Kansas City.

5. Mbappé Makes France History In Style

After tying the record for most goals in the history of France’s men’s team, Kylian Mbappé set the new mark in style.

Mbappé picked up possession after Michael Olise was fouled, but the referee played the advantage. From there, he unleashed a laser past Senegal keeper Édouard Mendy for a record-setting goal. It also put a ribbon on France’s win over a quality Senegal team.

6. Ayari’s Laser Gives Sweden A Lead

Sweden got on the board in the seventh minute in its World Cup opener through midfielder Yasin Ayari, who hammered home a shot from just outside the top of the 18-yard box. His first of two goals against Tunisia was a knuckleball that barely moved through the air. It went around the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

7. Mbappé Dazzles Against Sweden

Viktor Gyokeres found himself in a one-on-one situation inside the box against Mbappé, who delivered a stepover and then finished off a solo effort that gave France a lead over Sweden. It was another impressive goal for the French captain, who is keeping up with Messi in the race for most goals in World Cup history.

8. Folarin Balogun Goes Top Bin vs. Paraguay

Balogun’s coming-out party was on June 12 at Los Angeles Stadium against Paraguay, and his second goal of the game for the USA was the cherry on top.

The AS Monaco striker delivered a dominant first-half performance, imposing his will on Paraguay’s defense. He had already scored when midfielder Malik Tillman put him through on goal. He fought off one defender, dribbled past another and then used his weaker left foot to place a shot perfectly in the top corner.

9. Kane’s Stunner Beats DR Congo

Cometh the hour, cometh the man. When England needed a goal, its captain and all-time-leading goalscorer stepped up.

Anthony Gordon played the ball to Kane, who was not in a scoring position near the top of the 18-yard box when he gained possession. From there, he dribbled right, created space and unleashed a vicious strike that beat DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.

10. Tillman Scores On Fabulous Free Kick

The USA was in danger of potentially losing its 1-0 lead to Bosnia and Herzegovina in its round of 32 match, until Malik Tillman stepped up with one of the goals of the tournament.

Over 10 minutes after Folarin Balogun was sent off due to a red card, Tillman gave the USA a much-needed goal when he scored on a free kick from outside the box. Not only did Tillman get enough air and bend on the shot to get it past the wall, but he also somehow snuck close enough between the Bosnia and Herzegovina goalkeeper and the post to get it into the net as the USA took a 2-0 lead.

11. Haiti’s Isidor Scores On Absolute Screamer

Haiti was only playing for pride against Morocco, but that doesn’t mean its goals should count for less. Wilson Isidor scored one of the top goals of group play when his strike from outside the box somehow found the back of the net, perfectly shooting for the top left corner of the net to give Haiti a 2-1 lead over Morocco at the time.

12. Dembélé On The Dot

It only took Ousmane Dembélé 20 minutes to record a brace in France’s win over Norway, with his left-footed shot from outside the box finding the net. It was the type of goal that showed the PSG star’s previous woes at the international level might be behind him, as he buried a pretty impressive shot en route to a hat trick.

13. Shomurodov Chips Away For A Goal

Eldor Shomurodov found an ambitious way to score in the 10th minute of Uzbekistan’s match against DR Congo. He was able to get the ball in the box after a good run, getting his left foot on it and somehow elevating it over the pursuing defender. The ball hung in the air for a couple of seconds as well, getting over the outstretched reach of the DR Congo goalie to give his side a 1-0 lead.

14. Muñoz Delivers Acrobatic Finish

Colombia dominated Uzbekistan for 39 minutes, but it needed a moment of brilliance to finally break through against a stingy defense.

Colombian star Luis Díaz played a great lofted pass down the field as right back Daniel Muñoz made a run into the Uzbekistan box. Muñoz, who plays for Crystal Palace, only needed one touch to use the momentum of the pass to carry it past Uzbekistan goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov.

15. Elanga’s Banger Keeps Sweden Alive

Sweden was down 1-0 to Japan, a result that would have left its fate uncertain for the knockout rounds.

Enter, Anthony Elanga. The Sweden winger picked up the ball on the right wing and curled a beauty into the far post with his weaker foot. It was a potentially massive goal.

16. Sano Sends It In To Give Japan Lead vs. Brazil

Japan wasn’t able to upset Brazil in the round of 32, but it gave it a good scare thanks to Kaishū Sano. In the 29th minute, Sano worked his way though Brazil’s defense before firing off his strike as he was falling down from outside the box. The goal gave Japan a 1-0 lead, which it held for a good portion of the match.

17. Bosnian Banger From Alajbegovic

Kerim Alajbegovic stepped up when his country needed him against Qatar on Match Day 3.

The 18-year-old attacker, who plays his club soccer for RB Salzburg in Austria, picked up a pass from midfielder Ivan Basic. He dribbled around one Qatar defender and then unleashed an impressive strike from 25 yards out that beat goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada.

18. Gio Reyna Caps Win With Trivela

The exclamation point at the end of the United States’ win over Paraguay came from Reyna, who put his impressive technique on display in the final minute of the match.

Reyna, a source of controversy at the 2022 World Cup, came on in the 82nd minute for Tillman. The USA was keeping the ball while seeing out the win over Paraguay when the ball moved up the field down the right wing. Alex Freeman gave the ball to Reyna for what was the 26th pass of the attack, and Gio hammered it home with the outside of his right foot.

19. Quiñones Ignites Mexico vs. Ecuador

Julián Quiñones timed his run perfectly to get on the end of Roberto Alvarado’s pass. He got inside the 18-yard box, cut in with the ball on his right foot, and he unleashed a screamer into the top corner of the near post. It sent Mexico City Stadium into a frenzy.

20. Lo Celso’s Free-Kick Golazo

No Lionel Messi? No problem. Giovani Lo Celso buried the free kick outside the box in the first half of Argentina’s match against Jordan as Messi watched from the bench.

21. Taking It Off The Corner Flag And Scoring

Rafik Belghali had one of the goals of the tournament when he won a ball off the corner flag before weaving through the Austrian defense and firing a banger that helped Algeria level its match against Austria.

22. Nmecha Combines With Wirtz For Brilliant Goal

The Germans opened their account quickly against Curaçao, to the surprise of no one. One of the best teams in the field facing the smallest country in the tournament was always going to be a mismatch, and it only took Germany six minutes to take the lead.

Midfielder Felix Nmecha picked up the ball just outside the 18-yard box on the left side of the field. He played a pass to star Florian Wirtz — among the top-25 players in our ranking of the World Cup’s 100 best — who pushed a slick pass back to Nmecha. The Borussia Dortmund man finished a clever one-two with a beautiful curling finish.

23. Hwang Equalizes In Style

South Korea controlled its opening match against Czechia but found itself behind in the second half after the Czechs took a first-half lead.

Hwang In-beom was all over the pitch in this match, but his equalizing goal truly stood out. He was played into the 18-yard box by PSG midfielder Kang-In Lee, then he stopped on a dime, put the ball on his right foot and chipped Czechia goalkeeper Matěj Kovář. It was a brilliant goal that the Koreans needed badly.

24. Mbappé Unleashes Left-Footed Golazo

Earlier on Monday, June 22, Lionel Messi scored twice to get to 18 World Cup goals, the most ever. It took Kylian Mbappé hours to respond.

Michael Olise teed up the France captain on the right wing, and Mbappé put the ball on his weaker foot and hit it brilliantly into the back of the net. It was Mbappé’s 15th World Cup goal, which signals he will not stop chasing Messi and maybe take over his lead one day.

25. A Poignant Goal For Canada

Canada’s fourth goal in its 6-0 win over Qatar proved to be emotional for all gathered in Vancouver as it occurred mere moments after Ismael Kone was carted off the field with a serious leg injury.

Nathan Saliba, who came on for Canada for Kone, took a bending free kick that landed just inside the woodwork past the Qatar keeper.

Instead of a usual celebration, Saliba held up the jersey of his teammate in what will be a lasting image of Canada’s World Cup run.

26. Dembélé Hesitates And Scores vs. Norway

Ousmane Dembélé’s first goal of his hat trick against Norway was also pretty impressive. The France star junked out a Norwegian defender along the edge of the box before firing a shot to give his team an early 1-0 lead.

27. Papa Gueye With An Absolute Banger

Gueye subbed on in the second half of Senegal’s win over Iraq and scored one of the top goals of the group stage just minutes later. He scored on an impressive strike from outside the box, finding the top shelf as he perfectly bended the ball for a goal.

28.  Vinícius Júnior Delivers Golazo vs. Morocco

The Real Madrid star came into this tournament knowing he needed to be at his best for Brazil. After Morocco took a first-half lead, he stepped up.

Vini Jr. picked up the ball near the touchline after a pass from midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. He cut inside onto his preferred right foot and nearly put the ball through the net with his finish.

29. Dembélé Completes Hat Trick vs. Norway

Congrats, Ousmane Dembélé. Not only did you score a hat trick in France’s win over Norway, but all three goals also received pretty high placement on this list. His hat trick came in the first half, making it all the more impressive.

30. Jiménez Doubles Mexico’s Lead

Raúl Jiménez, Mexico’s leader in attack, picked up the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and unleashed a fantastic strike into the top corner. It doubled Mexico’s lead in impressive fashion, and the scoreline held for the host nation to advance.

31. What A Volley! Mahmić Buries Debut Goal

Ermin Mahmić wasted no time making his presence felt for Bosnia and Herzegovina, even with his team down a player and down multiple goals.

Moments after coming into the game, the substitute slammed a volley past Swiss keeper Gregor Kobel, who had punched the ball right into Mahmić’s wheelhouse. Even in Bosnia’s eventual loss, this was one of the game’s best moments.

32. Ashour’s Thunderous Strike Puts Egypt Ahead

Egypt entered its first game of the tournament against Belgium as a big underdog, but it got off to an early lead through a fantastic strike from Emam Ashour.

Ashour, who plays for Al Ahly SC in Egypt, got a pass from birthday boy and Egypt captain Mohamed Salah about 25 yards from goal. Then, he unleashed a powerful strike that went past world-class goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

33. Baturina Equalizes In Style vs. England

After falling behind because of a Harry Kane penalty, Croatia grew into its matchup against England very well and was rewarded. A long ball was played forward to Petar Sucic, who laid the ball off to Martin Baturina.

Baturina delivered a great strike that England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could only get a hand to.

34. Cape Verde’s First-Ever World Cup Goal

Uruguay conceded a free kick at least 30 yards from goal, and it didn’t seem like Kevin Pina was going to take aim at goal from that distance. Instead, Uruguay only put two players in the wall, which separated and let Pina’s shot go straight through into the back of the net.

It was a shocking moment in Miami but a brilliant hit from Pina.

35. A Promising Goal For Canada

Canada fell a goal short of forcing a draw against Switzerland to win Group B, but Promise David’s goal in the second half of that match nearly helped Les Rouges win the group. He was able to get his foot out and connected on a difficult cross for a Canadian goal.

36. Jordan Shocks Austria With Fantastic Goal

Austria midfielder Xavier Schlager lost the ball in midfield, and Jordan immediately began a counterattack. Noor Al-Rawabdeh fed winger Ali Iyad Olwan on the left wing, and he dribbled the ball 50 yards into the 18-yard box before curling a fantastic goal into the far post.

It was a fantastic way for Jordan to score its first-ever World Cup goal.

37. Saibari Runs Through Brazil’s Defense

Morocco delivered a brilliant goal to open the scoring in its star-studded matchup with Brazil.

Real Madrid playmaker Brahim Diaz picked the ball up and found Ismael Saibari in between Brazil center backs Gabriel and Marquinhos, two of the best defenders in world soccer. With his first touch, the Moroccan striker lifted the ball over Alisson, one of the best goalkeepers in the world, for a brilliantly executed opening goal.

38. Messi. Hat Trick. Greatness.

The goal is quintessential Messi – collecting at the top of the box, a quick shift to the left and letting it rip – but its significance is what stands out.

Messi doesn’t have many more “firsts” in him, but this goal gave him three on the night for his first hat trick at the World Cup. With 16 goals in his sixth appearance at the tournament, he tied Germany legend Miroslav Klose for the most ever scored at the men’s World Cup.

39. Austria Heads Into The Knockout Stage

Austria got a goal at the buzzer to level its match against Algeria, scoring a much-needed goal to help it advance. The score was a result of two headers, with Sasa Kalajdzic getting the goal for Austria.

40. Nakamura Equalizes Against The Dutch

Down 1-0 after Virgil van Dijk gave the Netherlands a lead, Keito Nakamura stepped up with a massive goal for Japan.

And what a hit it was. Nakamura picked up the ball just inside the 18-yard box, got it under control and then unleashed an impressive right-footed hit to beat Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. The most impressive part was that Nakamura’s momentum was going away from goal when he struck the ball.

41. Messi Makes World Cup History

After missing a penalty in the ninth minute against Austria, it looked like it might not be Messi’s day. He only needed one goal to pass Miroslav Klose and become the World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Instead, about 30 minutes later, he delivered a classic Messi goal. Facundo Medina was on the left wing and played a low cross near the penalty box. Messi was right there, ready to pounce, and unleashed a fantastic left-footed shot that beat Austrian goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

42. Maeda Finishes Brilliant Team Move

Ritsu Doan played a one-two in midfield and then found Daizen Maeda through on goal. It was a wonderful team move that saw Japan take a lead against Sweden.

43. Ayari Scores His Second Banger vs. Tunisia

Yasin Ayari, have a day. The Brighton midfielder and Swedish national star delivered two goals, the second of which got commentator Maurice Edu to proclaim, “Bangers only.”

Ayari could have represented Tunisia internationally, as his father is from the country. What an occasion for him to score twice.

44. Ueda Delivers Banger Against Tunisia

Tunisia didn’t stand much of a chance on Saturday night against Japan, especially if Ayase Ueda is going to score goals like he did.

Ueda delivered a cracker from outside the box that gave Tunisian goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen no chance.

45. Ndiaye Adds To Senegal’s Lead

Iliman Ndiaye knew Senegal needed style points in its win over Iraq, and he gave his side a fifth goal in style.

46. Manzambi Buries Close-Range Volley

Coming on as a second-half sub for Switzerland, Johan Manzambi broke open what felt like a stalemate with a brilliant finish.

Swiss midfielder Rubén Vargas looped the ball across the net that a Bosnian defender attempted to clear out via a header. Instead, the ball falls right in front of Manzambi, who twists his body past his marker and slams it past an outstretched Nikola Vasilj.

47. Cunha Goes Off-Balance To Bag A Brace

Cunha’s second goal against Haiti once again set up Vinícius Júnior, this time on a counter-attack. The Real Madrid star sprinted down the pitch with the ball at his feet to then slide a pass to the Manchester United playmaker, who initially took a wide touch. But Cunha found the narrow angle and slammed it into the roof of the net as he tumbled onto the pitch.

48. Summerville Finishes Great Run With Curling Finish

Cyrienco Summerville is likely on the move this summer after West Ham United were relegated from the Premier League. His price tag will have gone up after his goal against Japan.

Ryan Gravenberch found Summerville on the right wing, and he cut in on his weaker left foot and unleashed a curling effort that beat Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. It was a fantastic effort that gave the Netherlands a lead that wouldn’t last.

49. Elanga Clips It Home For Sweden

Down four goals to the Netherlands, at least Anthony Elanga gave Sweden a brief lifeline. Alexander Isak slipped a wonderful throughball into Elanga from the halfway line. The Newcastle United playmaker raced down the pitch and finished it off with shot past Dutch keeper Bart Verbruggen.

50. Schmid Drills Austria Into Lead

Austria took an impressive lead against Jordan in its first match after a wonderful strike from Romano Schmid.

Austria kept possession impressively before midfielder Xavier Schlager teed up Schmid from just inside 25 yards out. He delivered a wonderful strike into the top corner, which gave Jordan goalkeeper Yazeed Yazeed Abulaila no chance.

Argentina Narrowly Avoids Historic Upset vs

Lionel Messi and Argentina beat Cape Verde 3-2 on Friday and advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 in a thrilling match in which the tiny island nation challenged the reigning champion until the final minutes of extra time.

The go-ahead score for Argentina was credited as an own-goal after Cristian Romero’s header deflected off Cape Verde’s Diney Borges in the 111th minute.

Argentina advanced to face Egypt, which beat Australia in a penalty shootout earlier Friday, in Atlanta on Tuesday.

Cape Verde’s memorable World Cup debut had been a stunning run that few outside the tiny island nation off the western coast of Africa could have predicted. Behind the stellar play of 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, Cape Verde became the smallest country to reach the knockout round, securing surprising draws against Spain and Uruguay and another against Saudi Arabia.

Vozinha had 10 saves against Argentina, including five against Messi.

Messi added another brilliant goal to his resume, sneaking behind the Cape Verde defense on a well-timed run as Martinez lofted a pass toward him, taking a quick touch and hammering a finish into the roof of the net past goalkeeper Vozinha for a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute.

The Argentina captain has seven goals in this tournament — one more France’s Kylian Mbappé in the Golden Boot race as the top scorer in this year’s World Cup — and extended his World cup record, moving two goals ahead of Mbappé on the all-time list. He has 12 goals during his record eight-match scoring streak.

Messi vs. Vozinha: Best Moments From The Legendary Battle

Cape Verde nearly completed the biggest comeback in men’s FIFA World Cup history, in large part due to another heroic performance from Vozinha, its 40-year-old goalkeeper who leaves the tournament a national hero.

Cape Verde, the lowest-ranked team left in the World Cup and the third-smallest country to ever compete at the tournament, forced extra time against Lionel Messi and Argentina after finding an equalizer in the 59th minute of the Blue Sharks’ World Cup round of 32 match at Miami Stadium on Friday.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring for Argentina in the 29th minute to give him a record-extenting 20th World Cup goal, but Deroy Duarte brought Cape Verde level on a close-range shot that Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez couldn’t get to. The goal was Duarte’s first-ever for Cape Verde.

Argentina had the opportunity to take back the lead in the 63rd minute, but Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha denied a darting Messi of his second goal of the match.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper saved another big chance from Messi in the 72nd minute, this time from a free-kick just outside of the penalty box.

With Argentina desperate for a go-ahead goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time, it was awarded another free kick from just outside the penalty box, setting Messi up for a cinematic finish in a situation he’s delivered in before. Messi found the target, but Voninzha was there to block his shot again and send Cape Verde to extra time.

Argentina struck first once again to start extra time, but it didn’t take long for Cape Verde to come up with another heroic response, this time from Sidny Lopes Cabral, who scored an absolute stunner to even things at two goals a piece.

Cape Verde kept the pressure on Argentina, but La Albiceleste found the winner through an 111th minute own goal to give them the 3-2 win and end Vozinha’s dream run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Vozinha recorded eight saves against Argentina in the 90 minutes of regulation time. He also recorded seven saves for Cape Verde against Spain in the group stage to secure a scoreless draw against one of the tournament’s title favorites. He will leave the tournament with 25 saves, which is the tournament-high.

Argentina is the team moving on to the round of 16, but Vozinha and Cape Verde will leave the tournament champions in their own right.
