Is Egypt’s Mohamed Salah Playing vs

Mohamed Salah is in the starting lineup for Egypt’s debut in the knockout round of the World Cup against Australia despite a hamstring injury sustained in the group stage finale.

The former Liverpool star was set for the start at Dallas Stadium on Friday, a day after coach Hossam Hassan said through a translator he was hopeful Salah would play but might have to come off the bench.

Salah needs one goal to tie Hassan’s Egyptian record of 69 international goals. The 34-year-old team captain has appeared in 119 international matches.

Salah was replaced in the 57th minute of Egypt’s 1-1 draw against Iran that sent the Pharaohs to the knockout round for the first time in their fourth World Cup. Hassan said Salah went through limited training in the days before the Australia game.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

USA’s Folarin Balogun Avoids Multi-Game Suspension; Won’t Play vs

U.S. men’s national team star striker Folarin Balogun has avoided a multi-game suspension for his red card in the win over Bosnia and Herzegovina but will sit out the World Cup round of 16 game vs. Belgium, a U.S. Soccer spokesperson confirmed.

Balogun, who scored in Wednesday’s 2-0 win, was sent off in the 64th minute of the second half by referee Rafael Claus after stepping on Bosnia and Herzegovina player Tarik Muharemović’s ankle.

A player who receives a red card is automatically dismissed for the rest of that match and must sit out the subsequent match.

That means the U.S. will be without its leading goalscorer at the tournament (three goals in four games) for a crucial match on Monday against Belgium in Seattle with a quarterfinals spot on the line.

Balogun is the first player to score a goal and register a red card in a World Cup knockout match since France legend Zinedine Zidane against Italy in the 2006 final.

When Can Balogun Return?

Should the U.S. beat Belgium and reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002, then Balogun will be able to re-join the squad. The USMNT will need him should it reach that stage as it will play the winner of the round of 16 game between Spain and Portugal — two of the tournament’s favorites to win it all.

That quarterfinal game will be on Saturday, July 11 in Los Angeles.

Was There An Appeal Process for Balogun’s Red Card?

The U.S. had no path to appeal Balogun’s standard one-match suspension, as confirmed by FOX Sports rules analyst Mark Clattenburg. Had FIFA decided that Balogun would be suspended for more than one game, then the U.S. could have appealed that decision.

Who Could Replace Balogun In USA’s Lineup?

U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino has two other striker options in his squad: Ricardo Pepi and Haji Wright. Expect either player to get the start with Balogun on the bench.

Pepi, part of his first World Cup squad, has six goals for the U.S. in 17 career games. He scored 19 goals for Dutch club PSV Eindhoven this season, helping the team win its league title.

Wright was part of the 2022 World Cup squad under former U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter, scoring one goal at that tournament. He’s been a profile scorer for English club Coventry City (49 goals across all competitions in three seasons) and helped the team reach the Premier League for the upcoming season.

Pochettino could also go with a dual striker setup with both Pepi and Wright up top.

The other option could be a formation change where star forward Christian Pulisic plays more in a ‘false No. 9’ position where he’ll be even more involved in the attack.

One Man Led USA To A World Cup Quarterfinals

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Now 74 years old, Bruce Arena remains the only coach in the almost century-long history of the FIFA World Cup to lead the U.S. men’s national team into the quarterfinals of the biggest event in sports.

Current USA boss Mauricio Pochettino has a chance to become the second on Monday, when the Americans face European titans Belgium for a place in the last eight. Some would argue that Pochettino has the responsibility, too.

Getting to the round of 16? That’s nothing new. For all the excitement generated by the Americans’ performance at this World Cup — the U.S. won three games at one tournament for the first time ever, including its first knockout win since Arena’s squad topped Mexico in South Korea 24 years ago — reaching this stage represents the status quo. Gregg Berhalter did it four years ago in Qatar. Jürgen Klinsmann and Bob Bradley got to the last 16 in 2014 and 2010, respectively.

None of those coaches had a pedigree — or a salary — in the same stratosphere as Pochettino, who previously led brand-name clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. And none of them had the benefit of playing a World Cup on American soil.

“It’s a huge advantage,” Arena, now the coach of the San Jose Earthquakes, told me on Thursday as Pochettino ran the U.S. squad through a workout on an adjacent field at the MLS team’s facility.

Bruce Arena lead the USA to the quarterfinals in 2002.(Photo by Brian Bahr/Getty Images) –>

Not only was soccer in a much different place in the country in 2002 — MLS had nearly folded the year before — Arena had to contend with a far tougher group stage. The U.S. opened that tournament in Japan and South Korea with a 3-2 win over Portugal, a title dark horse that boasted reigning Ballon d’Or winner Luís Figo. They then tied the South Koreans in front of 60,000 red-clad fans of the Taegeuk Warriors in Daegu, with only a smattering of visiting supporters in the house.

“You don’t think that’s an advantage?” the Brooklyn-born Arena joked.

“This is completely different,” he continued. “We have everything going for us. We had a pretty reasonable draw. We haven’t played real top teams to this point, and we’re playing at home, so there’s no reason why we can’t continue to be successful. I believe we have a very good chance of beating Belgium — and whoever’s next.”

That would be the winner of Spain and Portugal after both Iberian nations won their round of 32 matches later on Thursday. After La Roja routed Austria, Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal revealed how the bona fide trophy contenders think.

“The World Cup starts now,” Yamal said.

To Arena’s point, the U.S. has not yet beaten a superior team this summer. Man for man, they were stronger than Paraguay, Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They lost the final Group D match to Türkiye, though Pochettino rested almost his entire first-choice lineup for that contest with the Americans having already clinched first place.

That won’t be the case against the Belgians, who embarrassed the U.S. 5-2 in a March exhibition.

“Belgium is going to be a much stronger opponent,” said Arena, who was in attendance at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium on Wednesday for the win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. “I don’t think a player in the starting 11 for Bosnia could break into our starting 11. That’s not the case against Belgium. Belgium will have half a dozen players of equal caliber or greater, so it’s going to be a real game.”

United States vs Bosnia and Herzegovina Highlights 2026 FIFA World Cup™ | Round of 32

United States vs Bosnia and Herzegovina Highlights 2026 FIFA World Cup™ | Round of 32 –>

Still, Arena believes it’s a game the U.S. could — and probably should — win. Pochettino himself has repeatedly set his sights on the semifinals, or better. The country is jumping on the bandwagon in droves; Monday’s win was the U.S.’s most-watched soccer telecast in English language history with more than 24.4 million viewers – a number that jumps to nearly 33 million when taking in the Spanish broadcast.

“Why not us?” has become a mantra shared by American players and supporters alike. It’s a fair question. Nobody predicted Greece winning a European championship in 2004, or Leicester City claiming the Premier League in 2016.

Forget winning the World Cup: If Arena’s U.S. could reach the quarters with a far less decorated roster in 2002, on the other side of the planet, why shouldn’t the expectation be for this U.S. team to at least equal that feat on Monday in Seattle?

–>

Like Arena, Pochettino has instilled a culture where the team is more important than any individual, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Although he oversaw a group stage exit in 2006 and the loss in Trinidad and Tobago in 2017 that snapped the Americans’ streak of World Cup appearances at eight, for now Arena remains the most successful U.S. coach ever on the biggest stage. (He’s also won five MLS Cups, three Supporters Shields, and five NCAA titles during his 40-year coaching career.)

“He’s really great at putting a locker room together,” said Earthquakes forward Preston Judd, who leads all Americans in MLS this season with 11 goals.

With three World Cup wins, Pochettino has already surpassed one of Arena’s records. If he joins him by reaching the quarters, the 54-year-old Argentine will get the chance to become the first U.S. coach to reach the semis since Scotsman Robert Millar did it at the inaugural 1930 World Cup, when group winners advanced directly to the final four. Arena’s 2002 team fell just short, narrowly losing to eventual runner-up Germany in controversial fashion.

“It’s a nice position to be in, to be playing at home and having a little pressure on you,” Arena said of the opportunity afoot for his old team. “There’s nothing wrong with that. Hopefully they’re successful against Belgium.”

Egypt Defender Mohamed Hany Makes Unfortunate World Cup History vs

Egypt defender Mohamed Hany has become the first player in World Cup history to have two own-goals in the same tournament.

A free kick by Australia midfielder Aiden O’Neill in the 55th minute Friday went off Hany’s head and into the net to even the score in the round of 32 match at 1-1.

That came only minutes after Hany remained down on the field after a collision with Australia midfielder Connor Metcalfe when they were going for the ball near the same net.

Concerned Egypt teammates immediately signaled for help, and Hany was tended to for several minutes — apparently for a possible concussion — before being allowed to remain in the match. Medical personnel waited nearby with a stretcher, though it was never used.

Hany also had an own-goal in Egypt’s 1-1 draw against Belgium in the group stage.

Australia is playing in a knockout match at the World Cup for the third time. The Socceroos were shut out by Italy 1-0 in 2006, and lost to Argentina 2-1 in 2022 when their only score was also an own-goal.

Australia Switches Goalkeepers For Penalty Kicks vs

Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach was sent down under for penalty kicks in Friday’s round-of-32 match against Egypt — but the Socceroos were sent down under, too.

In the 119th minute, Australia subbed out Beach for veteran backup Mat Ryan with penalty kicks looming as the match was tied 1-1. The move didn’t pay dividends, though, as Ryan didn’t stop any of the four shots he faced in penalty kicks. Australia missed two shots in the 4-2 penalty shootout loss.

Beach had logged three saves on four shots in Friday’s match, including a clutch one-handed save in stoppage time to ensure the match would go to extra time. While Beach had good moments on Friday, Ryan has been the superior goalkeeper in penalty situations over their respective careers. The 34-year-old Ryan has stopped 12-of-69 penalty kicks (excluding penalty kick shootouts) over his career, and the 22-year-old Beach has stopped just 1-of-8 penalty kicks he’s faced in his career (also excluding penalty kick shootouts).

The move Australian coach Tony Popovic made is relatively rare, but not entirely unprecedented at the World Cup. In 2014, the Netherlands made a similar substitution before a quarterfinal shootout against Costa Rica. Starting goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen was substituted in the 121st minute in place of veteran goalkeeper Tim Krul. The Dutch won the shootout, making all four of their penalties while Krul stopped two of the five he faced.

However, Popovic’s move marks just the second time a coach has switched goalkeepers right before penalty kicks.

Egypt will now face the winner of Friday’s Argentina-Cape Verde match in the round of 16.

Who Is Egypt’s Next World Cup Opponent?

For the first time in the history of its federation, Egypt will advance in the knockout stage of the World Cup. The Pharaohs defeated Australia on penalty kicks on Friday, moving on from the round of 32 to the round of 16.

Now, what’s next for Egypt at the 2026 FIFA World Cup? Here is a look at which team Egypt will play in the round of 16 and its potential path to making the World Cup final.

Who Will Egypt Play In The Round Of 16?

Following Egypt’s win over Australia in the round of 32, it will play the winner of Argentina vs. Cape Verde, a match set for Friday at Miami Stadium.

Egypt’s round of 16 match against the winner of Argentina-Cape Verde will take place at Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday, July 7, at noon ET on FOX and FOX One.

Who Could Egypt Play In The Quarterfinals?

If Egypt advances past the winner of Argentina-Cape Verde in the round of 16, it has three possible opponents it could play in the quarterfinals: Switzerland — which beat Algeria in the round of 32 to advance — and Colombia or Ghana, which face off Friday at Kansas City Stadium at 9:30 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One.

If Egypt advances, the quarterfinals match will take place at Kansas City Stadium on Saturday, July 11, at 9 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One.

Who Could Egypt Play In The Semifinals?

If Egypt advances to the semifinals of the World Cup, it has four possible opponents: the winner of England vs. Mexico or the winner of Brazil vs. Norway.

If Egypt advances, its semifinal match will take place at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday, July 15, at 3 p.m. ET on FOX and FOX One.

Egypt Wins First-Ever Knockout Game After 4-2 Penalty Shootout vs

Hossam Abdelmaguid scored the clinching goal in a shootout, and Egypt won its debut in the World Cup knockout round by beating Australia 4-2 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw Friday.

Australia goalkeeper Mathew Ryan didn’t stop any of Egypt’s four shots after replacing starter Patrick Beach late in extra time.

The victory came in Egypt’s fourth World Cup. Australia is now 0-3 in the knockout round.

Egypt will next face either defending champion Argentina or Cape Verde in the round of 16 on Tuesday in Atlanta.

Harry Soutar opened the shootout by missing high for Australia, and 18-year-old Lucas Herrington hit the crossbar with the fourth attempt to set up Abdelmaguid’s clincher.

Egypt’s other penalty shootout scorers were Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia and Mohamed Salah, the former Liverpool star who started despite a hamstring injury sustained in the group finale.

Jackson Irvine and Awer Mabil scored in the shootout for Australia.

Emam Ashour gave Egypt the lead in regulation by scoring in the 13th minute. Australia evened the match in the 55th when Egypt defender Mohamed Hany became the first player to score two own-goals in the same World Cup.

Whoa, Pharoah! 4 Takeaways From Egypt’s Penalty Shootout Win Over

Egypt continued to make history as its penalty shootout victory over Australia gave the Pharaohs a ticket to the round of 16 for the first time since 1934 and their first ever win in the World Cup knockout stages.

It was a determined performance in Dallas from Hossam Hassan’s side, which mostly dominated the game with its possession but had to find a way to break through at the end on penalties. And it did it in perfect fashion, scoring every one.

FULL PENALTIES ️ Australia vs Egypt 2026 FIFA World Cup™ Round of 32

FULL PENALTIES ️ Australia vs Egypt 2026 FIFA World Cup™ Round of 32 –>

For Australia? Despite the resilient performance, questions will arise about the selection of players who took a penalty, as it included the 18-year-old Lucas Herrington and Harry Souttar from Leicester City — both defenders.

Regardless, Egypt celebrates as it has made the round of 16 for the first time in 92 years. It was wonderful to see Mo Salah especially make it this far. He was obviously emotional after the game, and justifiably so.

Here are my takeaways:

1. Mo Salah Still Special In So Many Ways

During the group stage, Salah had 11 chances, including three that turned into goals. Against Australia, however, he was very quiet by his standards. It was likely due to his recent issues with a hamstring problem, so it slowed him down.

But it was also augmented by the fact that Australia’s resilient defending and evolved gameplay forced Egypt — and Salah — to chase the ball in the second half. At 34 years old, it was not surprising to see him struggle slightly.

But then, in extra time, it was almost as if he did a Mario Kart version of picking up a star and reigniting, providing a lot of threat on the right wing. And in the penalty shootout, he delivered a clutch finish, which was almost a panenka. That’s why Hassan kept his captain through the full game, because he knew that Salah’s impact could happen in an instant.

2. Emam Ashour Showed His Swagger

We all know about Salah’s obvious attention and his impact on Egypt. And others such as Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush and veteran playmaker Trezeguet, who has had a long career that included a three-year stint with Aston Villa.

But Emam Ashour has been so clinical for this team before and during this tournament. His goal today was classic poacher with a hint of prowler as he headed in the ball from Karim Hafez.

Ashour is known for using Conor McGregor’s “Billionaire Strut” as a celebration and his performances have definitely warranted some swagger.

At age 28, he’s mostly stayed in Egypt’s domestic league aside from a very brief stint at Danish side Midtjylland. He could earn himself a move back to Europe if he continues to impress.

3. Socceroos Were Resilient For 120 Minutes …

Australia most definitely deserved the equalizer and the fight to take this to a shootout in the first place. The goal was thanks to a wonderful cross from NYCFC midfielder Aiden O’Neill. The height advantage was an obvious strength for Tony Popovic’s side and O’Neill’s set piece was just too good for it not to end as a goal, even if it didn’t come from one of his teammates.

And then there was Australia’s defensive commitment, including from the aforementioned goalkeepers. Overall, it was incredibly impressive as theSocceroos did everything and anything possible to deny Egypt’s attack.

Goalkeeper Patrick Beach, who made only two appearances for the national team before this tournament, made some fantastic stops, including an incredible save at the end of the regular time, denying Rami Rabia’s strong header.

He came off just before the end of extra time to be replaced by the veteran Mat Ryan, who came in for the penalty shootout.

4. … But Poor Penalty Decisions Undid Them

This is where Australia got it wrong. I understand that Souttar is the captain and wanted to lead by example, but for him to take the first penalty just didn’t seem right. I just didn’t think a center back should have been the first player to step up.

And then there was the teenager Lucas Herrington, yet another center back, who also missed his attempt. Look, this was absolutely not his fault. I felt that it was just too much pressure to put on the young man’s shoulders — and sadly it was. He will overcome this, I am positive. But with these high stakes, the responsibility should have gone to someone else.
